They are disposable cylinder they are not meant to be refilled. If they were they would have a bleeder valve at the top for filling purposes like the Primus cylinders. It's actually Illegal to refill them in Australia. (But some do.)

I have used the adapter many times. It seems like it only refills the smaller tanks about half of what they are when you buy them. I have a Mr Buddy heater that uses the 1 pound tanks, and it runs about half as long on refills as it does on new tanks.
Putting the empty canisters in the freezer for a couple of hours before refilling helps to get a fuller refill. I always weigh the empty bottle first then again after they're refilled to get an accurate 14 oz. fill weight.
You forgot about mentioning to put the donor bottle in the freezer for 30min prior to filling, otherwise you'll only fill the bottle up to about 70%....
@@x189philthethrill No, if you put the small 1lb bottles in the freezer before filling them you'll be able to fill them up more than if they're warm or room temperature.
Just purge the air out a couple of times. Stop filling the small tank and let air out by pushing in on the valve on the little tank. Let the air out (about 4-6 pushes not a constant hold) and then put back on to fill

My friend tried this. Bought this adapter from Amazon. We connected a full tank to an empty Coleman Propane cylinder. After opening he valve, it hissed for about 3 seconds until the pressure equalized and then it stopped filling. When we removed the now supposedly filled tank, the valve on the refilled tank leaked and was nowhere near full. We tried this on 4 different tanks, and 3 out of the 4 tanks leaked after attempting the refill. Were we doing something wrong, or was the adapter we purchased off Amazon Defective? Why didn't it fill the tank further? As far as I could tell, no fluid transferred into the empty tank, just a bit of Gas. We had to connect a torch handle to the tank to keep the gas from leaking out which is really inconvenient taking these tanks with torches on them to the campsite.
It isn't good to check the Schrader valve with water, it can tarnish the brass, just use a lit match or lighter to see if there is any gas leaking out of the valve. It doesn't tarnish the brass and is better at detecting the leak and alerting the user. It is just the smart thing to do.

You need to bleed the air out of them, then top them off. But check them on a scale to avoid over filling them.
