Trip to Belgium (2) - Fort Breendonk

Das Festung Breendonk befindet sich bei Willebroek und ist seit 1947 eine nationale Gedenkstätte. Ursprünglich war die Festung Teil des belgischen Verteidigungsgürtels, wurde aber 1940 während des zweiten Weltkrieges von der deutschen Wehrmacht erobert. Bis zum Herbst 1944 diente das Fort als Auffanglager für die geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo). Über 3000 Menschen wurden bis zur Befreiung inhaftiert. Es überlebten etwa 450 Menschen die Torturen. Seitdem widmet sich die Gedenkstätte der Erinnerung der Geschehnisse im KZ-Sammellager und macht mit der Erhaltung der Festung, Besichtigungen der Gefängniszellen, und der dort aufbewahrten Gegenstände einen dunklen Teil der Geschichte lebendig.
The fort Breendonk is located at Willebroek and is since 1947 a national memorial. Initially the fort was part of the Belgian defense line, but was conquered in 1940 during the second worldwar by the German forces. Until the autumn of 1944 served the fort as a reception center for the german secret state police (Gestapo). Over 3000 people were imprisoned until the liberation. The torture survived about 450 people. Since then, the memorial is dedicated to the memory of what happened in the concentration camps and with the preservation of the fortress, visiting the prison cells, and the objects from there, they make a dark part of history alive.

Here is a memorial that should make us reflect on the past, present and future, to avoid repeating the same mistakes that led to this useless war and destructive that caused so much suffering to all the people involved. One more great job of you, Dirk. Thanks for that.

Sensational work Dirk. It looks like torture chambers like what were in Auschwitz. Thank you for showing the Site with dignity and as a memorial. Half of my relatives who did not leave a village near Debretzen, Hungary, died in the Camps. Only those who came to the United States before the War survived. Only two of my Father's teenage second cousins who were 15 and 17 when they were put in Auschwitz survived. After regaining their health, they moved to Israel. I met them and Family there.

La fortaleza Breendonk se encuentra en Willebroek y es desde 1947 un monumento nacional. Inicialmente, la fortaleza era parte de la línea de defensa belga, pero fue conquistada en 1940 durante la segunda worldwar por las fuerzas alemanas.
