Bennie Moten's piano solo is a beautiful example of the best of midwestern rag. i love it!

I agree. Every time I hear it, I get a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. It is so beautiful. It is too bad Bennie Moten didn't live very longer, he was truly one of the greats, and I like to think that James Scott was very proud of him.

@@andrewbarrett1537 I believe the photo at 1:20 was from the Famous Door in NYC, after Bennie Moten had passed.

Thanks for the great post, but I believe the title of this tune is "Kater Street Rag, not "Kaster Street Rag". I could be wrong.
Anyway, pay close attention to Bennie Moten's piano solo. Bennie Moten was reportedly greatly influenced by James S. Scott (1885-1938) the "classic ragtime" composer who is so well-known today (and who was well-known to the black community in Kansas City at the time). Moten's solo here is supposed to be very much the way James Scott actually played.

Also, Ada Brown, the blues singer whom they made their first recordings with was the cousin of James Scott! Also Bennie took piano lessons as a young lad from Scott Joplin pupils Charlie Watts and Scrap Harris. I know how incestuous modern jazz scenes are in certain cities, I assume it was much the same back then. So cool.
