JENNIFER FOUND CARMEN SANDIEGO! Okay, now that I got that out of my system...
We went into the hives, Jennifer found 2 queens (we didn't even look for the 3rd) and we marked them both. Carmen was marked white, under the presumption that last year was her first year, and the other queen in the nuc was marked yellow, for this year.
No, we won't be selling queens, so sticking to the color code probably doesn't matter much, but it makes us feel good.
We used our Mann Lake One-Handed Queen Catcher for the first time and were very happy with it. Learn all about it and how it works in the video.

that was neat to see the drawn comb and eggs so clearly, congrats on finding the older queen and the new one too. How many hives do you plan on maintaining once your at full production ? thanks for sharing
You know... I don't know. Some folks say I could have 100 hives and just go in them in late spring for honey and never touch them the rest of the year. Others say you have to look in the hives every two weeks, etc. So... I just don't know!
I do know that the boxes are expensive! lol
after a quick search on ebay last night I totally agree on the cost of empty boxes and I thought two hundred for a nuc was steep ::/ I say you find a way that suits you best perhaps a middle ground of ways, if your bees are thriving and honey production is good your doing something right :) it may not work for others and that's ok it works for you and that's what is important :) different area climate and that sort of thing are huge factors in these adventures :)
I like that queen catcher from Mann Lake. It's funny, I have a new, marked queen in one of my hives this year (yellow for 2017) that I bought from a breeder but I have never been able to find her when I inspect the hive. My other queen, whom I caught in a swarm isn't marked (I have no idea when she emerged) but I find her every time. Beekeeping is full of little mysteries like that. How many hives do you have?

We have 3 hives, a 10-frame, and 8-frame, and a 2-box-nuc.
That's cool. I have two this year, an eight-frame Langstroth and a small swarm I have housed in a nuc. You can check them out on my channel if you wish. BTW, Blake Kirby sent me over here.

Yup, that's what I did. The new queen got yellow, but the one we knew emerged last year got white. I put the chart in the video description as well, but thanks :-D
