Making the decision to cut down most of the trees on your property should be a tough one - at least I think so. It is a major change to the ecology of the area, not just the property I live on.
Nonetheless those concerns have been weighed and we have opted to clear out a large section of our property for pasture and a pond.

I think this is great. Clearing out a section of land can be really beneficial to the land (especially when you are leaving behind organic material like you have). It creates some breathing room for young trees to grow and let's light in for wild flowers which bees love! I'm doing the same thing with a section of my land. But slowly, and by hand. :)
Slow and by hand was what I expected to have to do, but then these guys said they'd cut and we got the money from them to pay to the mulcher, so it really worked out well - except for the money running out before the mulching was done - but we sure did get quite a head start.
Man now I need to go to the bathroom after hearing that running water. LOL
Bwahaha - I was wondering how loud the water would sound (I am sitting in front of our fish pond). Turns out the answer is "pretty darn loud!" Oh well, roll with the punches.
Wow!! Man that mulching machine is a beast, huh?
It is, and while it took a lot of work off my back I must admit that I expected it to do better. Not sure if I should be questioning the machine, the operator, or my funds running out. (lots of half-eaten branches to burn).
Pile them up for hugelkultur and save the burning for later.
Again another 'experimental' process to observe. Does any of the cleared land lend itself to pond site or formation?
bol
We will be digging out a pond, but I will not be doing hugelkultur.
Wow! Impressive! Here in Texas, this would be the only way to do it.
nice drone footage
Thanks!
Great deal of get it opened up like that. :)
One we couldn't pass up!
You're lucky to have trees a forestry company wanted. I had to clear 2 acres on my land and it took me a long time to get those weed trees out. They were mostly legumes and that was a big benefit. It have been actively planting timber trees and lemon grass into that area. Cost me a small fortune to get that area into production. It would have been nice to get a timber company to clear it for me. If you were able to clear that area and get all the organic material turned into much at no net cost that's a big benefit.
Sadly the income from the timber only gave us enough cash to have about 1/2 of the "trash" mulched up, but we're very grateful for the headway that has been made.
Well its a pretty stark and jarring difference, but I suspect in the next year or two you'll get things sorted out with some good ground cover and be able to take out the one or two trees you might not want and then plant perhaps a few of the kind of trees that you do want. In the end what matters is that you and your family are happy with the results and satisfied that you got value for the trees that you were able to then use to do the clean up work, so this project got done and didn't cost you or cost very little in the long run.
Oh yes, this is very much "blank canvas" stage. It will only get better from here!
Lespedeza and white clover as a cover crop. ;) Nice addition though.
You don't know of a place where you can buy wild white clover, do you?
www.seedland.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=Seedland&Product_Code=CLOV-DUTCH-50&Category_Code= I have always had good luck with seeds from these guys. You may have to wait a few days as they are not shipping again till the 12th due to Irma.
Ah, I thought White Dutch was different from the Wild White. Thanks!
Interested to see how your new pasture grows with the wood chips as a bass.
So, if I understand correctly, the lumber company paid you for the lumber they cleared from your land and that allowed you the finances to pay for a mulching company to clean up the mess the lumber company made and create a bass for your pasture. Making this a "win, win" for all?
Yes, exactly. They money from the timber wasn't enough to mulch everything, but perhaps about 1/2 of it. There are still several piles the lumber company left behind, but we're well on our way now. Without that this would have been a long, long process.
Do you think that layer of mulch will help encourage edible mushrooms mate?
I do, but - not much shade any longer. Not sure how we'll they'll do in full sun.
I hope y'all are well. I'd be interested to know how your place is doing since the logging last year. I'm sure life has just caught up with you, but I do miss the videos.
Blessings to you and yours.
That's very kind, thank you. The wheat grew okay over winter - a lot better in some areas than others. Clover did poorly, but looks like it will come back this fall. Still have a lot of half-pushed-over trees to clean up. Life has indeed been busy.
Nice mix left. Likely it will sprout all kinds of new shoots, more goats? Food forest, maybe, some fruit trees, and the like. Do you have your own bush hog or similar rugged duty mower?
I do have a bush hog, so we'll be keeping the stuff from coming up where we don't want it. I have no desire to own goats again.
What do you do with a sassy goat?
Grill it?
time will tell all, a comparison video a year later would be great just to see the difference . in our house trim is another of those bad 4 letter words, Id love to show my wife how things recover
Well I've been making these videos for 5 years now, so I expect you'll get to see an update video when the time comes :-)
Get Irma to come in there, and she'll weed whack, tear down, mulch, compost, and shred up any trees and shrubs you have.
We're actually counting on her to give a nice soaking rain for the wheat we'll be planting.
Now you stop planting potatoes in pots!
Nah, I don't need a field of potatoes - potatoes in containers is enough for me ;-) But you are right, I could!
