Thank you Scott, here in 2022 I've been thinking "I need more power out of the USB port", and you already answered that question for me. Five years ago.
Exactly the solution I was looking for! And here I was about to solder a 5V DC power supply (from a second USB power port) in parallel to the positive and negative power terminals of the USB AUX port in my car. This is obviously a much simpler way to resolve the problem!
Ferrite ring is what you call that thing, and if you search for Ground Loop Noise Isolator (or mix and match) you will find other ways to eliminate the interference. Ferrite rings only work so well, a true isolator will work better for this application.
If you're retaining the data connection, why do you need to still connect the auxillary? Doesn't the sound come through USB? Is it for calls specifically?
This makes me very happy that I just put in an after market system into mine lol. Sadly, theres no wiring harness for repurposing the existing USB to an aftermarket radio though ):
Damn. I have a 2013 maxima and an iphone 8 (old ass phone) and i swear it used to charge fine when using google maps + audio. Now it drains instead. Im convinced it is the new iOS update ???? Unless something happened to my port!? I wish my car had bluetooth then i can just play audio thru bluetooth and charge with the other cigarette lighter usb which charges fine…my phone doesn’t have an aux input anymore since they replaced it with the charger 🤔 Out of all the videos I’ve watched though i think this one has made the most sense about the power output of the usb charger. Thats what made me realize it could be my ios update because ive had this phone for 3-4 years and this is a fairly recent problem. 😫 thanks for the video. Im gonna look around for an alternative way to charge or connect my phone
An iOS update did not change this behavior. Either use a Y cable like I showed in this video or if you only have an AUX connection in your car, get a splitter that allows power input and 3.5mm output like this amzn.to/3ojgkRb
This video is about getting more power to your phone while retaining the factory USB connection. I hate inaccurate and clickbait titles, so if you can think of something better please let me know!
Question: What if your cig lighter is broken? Also, out of curiosity does it also combine voltage? Seems like it’d be bad for the device if you get double the voltage required to charge
If your 12v outlet is broken then this isn’t going to make any difference and no the Y cable is smart enough to maintain the voltage so only the amperage is going to increase not the voltage.
Hello, I soldered it myself because I could wait for a cable to arrive. But the very strange outcome was, it didn’t increase the power to charge my phone. When i plug in the added usb alone, it doesn’t want to charge the phone. When I connect the original usb first it charges. When I add the second usb it keeps on charging, when I unplug the original it continues charging. So there must be something in the lightning cable besides the 2 power wires that tell the phone “start charging”. Anyone had the same issue ?
In 2011 and older, you have to have both the USB and AUX cable plugged in. In 2012 and newer they improved it so that the audio remains digital and goes over the USB without the need of the AUX plugged in.
@@ScottSchramm the Y cable arrived. I tried it without that other cable (i.e., the one that includes the aux input), it charges as well as plays data. Yoo-hoo! Vehicle is a 2010 Cadillac SRX. Next step is to compare it against straight USB input to see how much more juice I get to my iPhone 12. Thanks.
I don't like using the USB for one reason: it starts auto playing music instantly! hate that, and it starts a song A... so dumb so I use the Cig lighter port to avoid that and I just use bluetooth from that point. My problem is that the port isn't snug enough and it did that in my last car too (same type of car). Frustrating :/
I don't think this poster understands the limitations of wire size. BTW USB ports SUCK if that is all they gave you on a new car ...compared to the old "cigarette lighter" ports the USB provide nothing in comparison ...forget about powering higher draw things you used to...you'll have to come off the battery or available spare fuse point and run some larger wire (#16guage min for 15 amps?) to a new portable somewhere ....now if you don't want a "cigaretter ligher" Port there is the 12volt 2 prong Port used on things like 12 voltage battery chargers and mini compressors etc ....you could put one of these ports in and then buy or make adaptors to connect whatever
In other words it is high time the automotive industry and computer industry come up with a universal high amp connector series....20 amp maximum is my suggestion ...enough to support various things like mini compressors/fans/auxiliary lights/battery chargers (even as a reverse to CHARGE the vehicle's battery or POWER the computer etc)
I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata and it looks very similar to what you’re showing here for the USB port and cigarette ports . Recently I accidentally spilled a drink and some of it apparently got into the USB port and now my audio from my iPhone 11 (which has no audio jack and Bluetooth just won’t work even though it tells me I’m connected ) so I’ve been using the USB port to play audio from my phone even though I don’t like that it is charging at the same time as I don’t want to overcharge it. Can you tell me how I can clean the USB port so that it might work again ? Also , can I clean the inside of the cigarette lighter with rubbing alcohol wipes? Is that safe to do?
2012 and up allows playback via USB without the stupid 30 pin adapter so that is good. As far as cleaning the ports, make sure the car is off and you may even want to disconnect the battery to be sure there is no power going to those ports when you try to clean them, especially the cigarette lighter port. Using a small q-tip with rubbing alcohol should work but might be too big for the USB port. You might have to replace that module. It has the usb and 3.5mm plug on it and connects with one cable. This might be the part you need: amzn.to/3n5hwar
It does not have USB plug only Aux and Bluetooth Sonata 2012 model So can it work when I change the AUX pluq and add Aux and USB While am using the tape Or unless I change both tape and Aux and USB
Have you been able to notice your phone charging? I have this exact issue with my aftermarket stereo system, bought a random y cable off Amazon, and it still doesn’t work. Maybe I need to try the one your using? Cause idk how else to do it without wirelessly charging, of which is out of the question.
If you have an aftermarket system, I would recommend using only a USB cable between a 12V adapter to your phone, and then use Bluetooth to you head unit for the music. The solution I show in this video with the Y cable is really only for using the stock system where the Bluetooth is limited and there are more features by using the USB for audio.
Be careful. I got a y splitter to get more power to run Apple car play and it completely ruined it. I didn’t do it your way but now my usb 1 doesn’t even work.
No one has reported issues with doing it my way, so not sure what you did to blow out your USB port. If you search eBay, there are tons of replacements available.
Yes, the Bluetooth is built in, but if you watch the video I explain that the built in Bluetooth is basic and doens't have the same features as the USB integration.
Scott Schramm You can download App called Documents 5 from App Store and download music as much U like and U can use all features that you want my friend try it.

Even in my 2017 Chevy cruze, the usb port doesnt provide enough power to charge a phone. But i might have a Y cable somewhere, ill have to try this.
It’s called a line filter. It helps reduce buzzing.
Can you please list off all of the exact wires/materials you are using. Trying to do this for my 11 sonota and I can’t find all the materials.
Sorry I don't have links to each specific part. Just google or search amazon for USB Y splitter and there are tons of options.
Great concept
You kan implement it inside the car

2011 and older Hyundai’s require both connected for the “iPod” cable to work. 2012 and newer work with just the USB cable.
This makes me very happy that I just put in an after market system into mine lol. Sadly, theres no wiring harness for repurposing the existing USB to an aftermarket radio though ):

Problem is the 12v to usb adaptor only gives 5v to usb when phone connected, but it doesn’t “see”iPhone when it gets current from radio
Doesn’t the use of the aux cable defeat the purpose of the cable inserted into the usb port? Confused.
