Lucky B*****d. I went all the way down to Weymouth looking for one. Closest I got was a garfish. I've heard there rare off the shore. Still no bass though!
Very nice. Bass - one of the very best-eating fish anywhere. Remove innards and gills only. Scrape off any slime present. Lightly coated in olive oil with a tiny bit of salt and half a dozen slices of fresh ginger arranged like big fish scales on the upper side, fresh lemon too if wished. And a tiny touch of freshly ground pepper . For a small one like that, 15 to 20 minutes at about 180C in an oven. Longer if bigger, proportionately. Eaten off the bone and served with either buttered mashed spuds or long grain rice with asparagus spears and hollandaise. This presentation also does fantastically well with salmon fillets, but roast those till the thinner belly meat is just beginning to caramelise brown. A meal too good for a mere king!
Remembering that the law changed this year and it is now illegal to take any bass for the table in UK waters. britishseafishing.co.uk/minimum-size-limits-for-shore-caught-fish/
For a small schoolie like that, I'd have to say releasing it until it grows to a legal size is probably a better and more sustainable option. Understand rod and line fishermen are not really the issue, but they take so long to grow, I'd always release such a special fish. 😉Tight lines.
When will people realise that pulling a fish backwards in water is hindering its recovery. Water flows over the gills from front to back. So wise up please.
Just came across this do you still get sea bass down tayport
Yes you sure do
Good to see a bass getting caught down there , keep hearing about them but never seen one caught. Well done.
Cheers bud had a good few sea bass past few months
