    Thank you for the review, recommendation and Dethatching hints.
    While it is not what I would call "Commercial Grade" equipment, it gets the job done and makes for a fun walk. :-)
    Cord management is KEY!
    Start close to the outlet at the house and work away from it. This is will keep your cord on one side and prevent you from having problems with the cord.

    Royce is a cutie ❤️ That said, I’m a recent follower of your channel in the process of rehabbing a 2 acre disaster on high alkaline compacted clay. Lots of issues, but I’m hoping soil amendments and hard work will do the trick over time. Bought the sun joe after watching your video on it a few weeks ago and I was surprised how much I like it. I think I will be using it often to help the compaction.

    Hey Ginja. In the late spring (end of April beginning of May) I dethached and did a Tenacity with Speedzone treatment which appeared to have done a decent job of killing undesirable grass and weed growth. After 2 weeks I hit the lawn again with Tenacity only. My goal was to eventually overseed. I didn't get to overseed right away due to weather issues and other things. About the first week of June I finally got to the point where I scarified and spread Propeat 13-5-8. A few days later I overseeded. I watered for 10 minutes 3 times a day up until the middle of July. At the end of June and the beginning of July the new grass filled in very well in most places. And by then I was mowing on a weekly basis. Then all of a sudden, in the last 2-3 weeks I've had some broadleaf weeks as well as crabgrass, Johnson grass, and other undesirables inundate places in my lawn where the grass was looking great. My plan was to do the Tenacity treatments and overseed again in the fall. But right now in the hot days of August what would you recommend? I am kind of at a loss for where to go from here. Thank you in advance for your professional guidance and comic relief.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  2 года назад

      herbicides work slower in hot weather but still do a fantastic job. spray in the early morning or late evening as the temps get or are below 90 degrees.

      Happy Easter Brother Ginja!
      Quick Update:
      My Zoysia is starting to wake up here in Virginia & I'm beginning to see results. I'm having some success Slaying my weeds... including those Super Nasty low growing vine-like cloves (maybe
      Lespedeza clover or Spurge). Ha-Ha... BUT ... Maybe you recall me sharing that I read on the web elsewhere that when Zoysia grass is dormant, it was ok to use Round-Up ... well I seriously wanted to kill those weed while they were super visible in my dormant Zoysia ... You guessed it... it did helped kill weed BUT it also killed Zoysia in those spot treated areas. Ha-ha of course!
      Anyway I'll have a few spots in my lawn now but am confident the Zoysia will fill in throughout the year. At least the weeds are on the run! lol. :-)
      Ginja, any advice on how to help the Zoysia spread along in those area? Maybe peat moss or topsoil after raking it a little???
      Since I did a pre-emergent treatment (Andersons 0.48% Barricade) in March before soil temp reached 50° 3" down, I think I must wait 4-5 months before seeding?
      Either way I'm taking a WIN against weeds!

    I’m a true believer in the Lawn Ginja. Already was using the SunJoe to dethatch, but scarified this year and used that ProPeat. What a huge difference. My lawn has never looked this thick and healthy.
    ProPeat question for you. What ProPeat would I use around end of June beginning of July for bugs? The last few years, I have had some sort of small insect do some damage to my lawn. Typically has happened during the summer drought, where I think it is just dormant. The landscaper I hired a few years back diagnosed the bugs so I use the Scotts, but would gladly switch to the ProPeat equivalent of the Step 3.
    Thanks for the channel. Great tips. I have the lawn everyone in the neighborhood wants now. #lawngoals

    Great video. I watched this and another one of yours on diagnosing problem lawns. I believe you said somewhere that you were in Utah. That advice is nice as I live in the Denver front range area. Too many of these videos are in warmer, wetter climates. I have multiple questions relating to lawns in the Rocky Mountain West but I will limit this comment to one issue I am struggling with. The issue I have is to do the de-thatching, aerating then over seeding, I see the normal recommendation is cut the lawn to a 2". My normal cutting height is 3" and BTW I have a bluegrass lawn. I did that that by cutting it to 2-1/2" then 2" is stages a couple of days apart. The 2" height really seemed to cut too low as it seems to expose the bottom of the grass. I then had a commercial dethatcher come in to do the thatch removal and then aerate. Not happy with what this guy left, think I will buy the Sun Joe dethatcher you use and do it myself from now on. Anyway, what are your comments for this part of the country for spring prepping the lawn as far as cutting height in preparation for dethatching?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 года назад

      I prefer to cut 2" or less on the cutting height in preparation. the lower the better. it exposes all the lawn issues.

    • @markturner6040
      @markturner6040 4 года назад

      Thanks for the reply. What height do you normally cut your lawn? Also, I noticed in your video there was a few bare spots (or tan colored spots), one by the driveway, one about 10-15 feet in from the driveway. What will you do to repair these spots in your lawn? I have a number of these in a normally very green, very healthy lawn. I ordered the Sun Joe dethatcher and plan to give these spots more focus along with properly detaching the whole lawn. Would it be good to clean the brown spots up, add a compost/peat layer and then reseed with a bluegrass mixture or just let the neighboring grass send rhizomes into it?

    Good work. I'm on Long Island, NY and I'm working on my mostly zoysia front lawn this year after getting some good results with my cool season back yard with the Sun Joe. With my front lawn, it is sloped and I just scalped it at 1.25in yesterday. After scalping it, I could see and felt the surface "dirt" feeling quite spongy. The game plan is to pass it twice with the Sun Joe dethatcher. I'm wondering if I should should do a pass with the scarify attachment afterwards and before hitting it with the fertilizer.

    my yard was really bumpy and hard; the mower would just shake, bounce, and rattle over the surface - until last year I got the SunJoe shown in this video, the verticutter blades cut thru those bumps and ground down any larger high spots to do a great job of leveling it out before reseeding - so I can vouch for that, well worth the sub $150 price .... I still get tons of worm mounds, but now light passes are all that are needed, and after late fall fert the grass is very thick this spring; I might just do a very light few passes with the SunJoe and the spring loaded raking tines before fert in the next few weeks, I've already used the cutter blades on a small area by some trees along the sidewalk just to make groves and further smoothing in high spots I scalp with the mower before some seed early this year to keep it from washing away - the device feels kinda light and plasticy, but using it you find that it is the perfect weight and size to be maneuverable and get the job done, way surpassing what you could possibly do with a hand rake; great tool that takes care of a new dimension in lawn care .... I saw the SunJoe in some of the Pest and Lawn Ginja's videos last year, and got more than my money's worth from it already; it does get dirty, and one of my wheels came loose, but its good for a few different tasks and is easy to use(managing the cord is the hardest part) really made a big difference to have a smooth, even, thick, and pro looking yard

    Hello Lawn Ginja: I live on 4 acres of grass in the country and have never power raked/dethached the lawn. Sometimes I'd mow after three weeks of growth, so a lot of dead grass would accumulate on the top. We are at the point now where not too much green lawn comes through because it's so heavy in dead cuttings just laying there. I MUST DETHATCH. I will probably get a Bluebird machine and do all 4 acres, but man that's a lot of hand raking. And I always felt I would have to do it twice. Nobody has any power machine that would accumulate all those trimmings, and it will be a huge amount, and to hand rake it is almost unthinkable. I have a Ford 8N tractor with a 6 ft Land Pride mowing deck. Was hoping another attachment could make for quick cleanup. Do you know of any machine that I could rent ? What's the best method to save my elbows from wearing out? Thanks for responding back, Ginja! THUMBS UP!

      @@pestandlawnginja Hey Ginja...I called my rental shop and they suggested just like you did! They only have a 22 inch machine, but also Brinley brand has a 40 inch pull behind attachment, and there is a built in top tray where you can place two cinder blocks on top to create more weight to keepthe unit from bouncing around, and you might be able to tie four blocks down to really bite in. A note about Amazon currently (April 2020), they are only shipping necessities out to customers. I wanted to order Prodiamine after your Great RUclips videos on the subject, but Amazon rejected the order, so I had to go locally, and I got my Chapin 4 gallon 24 volt back pack as you suggested. I watched Ryan Knorr and Grass Daddy videos on how to kill grass and started all over again. The question I have for you from your video, what is the sand/topsoil ratio when you level your lawn ? Great video! Learnt a lot about the SunJoe and other dethatching units watching his (and ShortCut Lawn) channels Thank you! I gather from these videos (especially the video last year comparing the electric powered a machine with the gas powered power rake unit) is how light the electric powered units (SunJoe and Greenworks) are compared with the gas powered ones. I live in the "frozen tundra" in a home with a walkout (which means pretty steep slopes in the lawn on both sides of the home). Which makes me wonder whether the
    lighter dethatchers like SunJoe and Greenworks be effective on these slopes or would it be advisable to stick with the gas powered
    "traditional dethatcher" from the rental store to get effective results dethatching/power raking on the slopes? Thanks again.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  4 года назад

      The biggest concern is these machines only weigh 25lbs and they are not self propelled. I would take them parrellel to the slope and I imagine they'd do just fine. I do the sun joe over the green works any day of the week.
