Hardtop over a soft top any day
Agree 100%!
soft top has a certain type of class - hard top are like poser verts...a lot of soft tops come with a detachable hard top also - so they truly are the best of both worlds
Hard top. Too many wankers around.
Bella Ollie personally the only conv I’d own is a mx5 and defo have a Hard top all year round ... more a coupe type person myself
Why? no space in the rear with the hood down. Manufacturers are all going soft top these days for good reason
Both hard too and soft top have a place but I think there’s something really nice about a proper hardtop folding roof.
Definitely agree there!
Maybe a small leapord pattern thong for you this summer while driving your convertible 🤣🤣🤣
Hard tops: look 100x better
With you there!
I prefer them! Not matter if rest boots space, they're stronger, because someone can break a Soft Top
@@ArturoPerez-si2xk where do you live ?)
Nah hard tops you can see the lines which in my opinion make it look less sporty
hard top convertibles, so much nicer to look at and fool other people
Agree completely!
" those of you in the know are already hissing and moving into attack position" has to be the funniest line I've ever heard in a car list video 😂😂
Haha it's how I imagine the internet mechanics who hit you with those 4-page long comments around how it would be utterly ridiculous to buy *insert car here* and how anyone who does is a *insert not nice thing here*
Congrats! Great content as usual. The more I watch you're videos, the more I realize that UK's automotive market (especially for used cars) is pretty fair when it comes to pricing. Where I come from, these cars would be twice as expensive in much worse conditions and with plenty more miles on the clock. Keep up the great work!
Cheers! Yeah we are very lucky, I suppose our fuel and insurance prices are a lot harsher than many countries though!
I drive a BMW Z3 2.8 . I purchased that with a detachable hardtop, it's nice having a hardtop for security, it's also nice having a soft top as well for weight purposes it sheds about 200 lb also With the hardtop it changes the look of the car entirely. With its wide body and hardtop it can look somewhat more aggressive than the average z3
You got me with that thumbnail, I clicked immediately lol. Also fair assessment on the E93 👌
Haha it was a strategic decision 👀
You all probably dont care at all but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot my password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Yehuda Mayson Instablaster =)
@Scott Jeremy thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Scott Jeremy it worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you saved my account!
Hard top definitely, hate the look of the cloth convertibles
With you on that one - I think there are some cars that suit a nicely coloured soft top, but would still rather have the hard top!
I had an MGTF and now have a convertible 330ci E46. The MG is honestly one of the most fun cars I’ve ever driven - though I felt like it was going to break every time I drove it. Also unbelievably cold in winter, the roof literally keeps zero heat in, where the bmw feels like a hardtop in that respect.
They do look like fun, not ideal driving a car that you're worried about in terms of reliability though!
Hard tops are where its at
Agreed 🤙🏽
The best of both worlds!
Rodrigo Novais sorry but I’ve got a soft top E46 330 m sport, it don’t look cheap and have no problems anytime of the year 🤷🏻♂️
Nah, rob the boot space and all manufacturers are making soft tops these days
@@davidviner4932 Yes, but it's a 'summer car' not an every day driver. Also it doesn't have to be new - so it shouldn't matter that "all manufacturers are making soft tops these days". 🤔🙂
Great vid as per usual at this point... not too long until youtube recommendations blows up your channel to the millions. To answer your question at the start... hard-tops, the end. Its the only reason i would have an SL at this point. They just look so much cleaner and they are alot quieter at speed than soft tops
Haha let's hope so! Cheers boss 🤙🏽 and agreed - I'm a hard top convertible guy too
Thanks. Another great video and good to see the 9-3 on the list as I'm on my 4th 🙂. My current one is 2012 and probably one of the last ones they made.
When it's time to change it I'll be sure to check out to see if you've any other convertible videos. I'm lucky enough to have £15k to spend.
I’ve not come across your channel before today” enjoyed the video great content found it informative and clear relevant info on each vehicle, 👍🏽
I'm glad you enjoyed it - appreciate the kind words!
For me I'd like hard top bcs
1-looks better
2-Safer
3-doesnt get wet when washed.
But I also like soft tops too bcs they are easier to replace
Wahheeeey you mentioned the saab! A few cool cars popped up that I never thought of like the z4 or alfa, but can't be happier with my saab! Great video
Haha I need to make sure I bring more variety and the saab offers exactly that!
I have the 2008 9-3 2.0t though it's not convertible, I plan to buy or trade for one.
I have been looking on RUclips for a video like this for long time. Thanks mate
No problem - glad it helped!
Nice vid like always my man👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Cheers again my dude!
the australian guy who reviewed the m3 also reviewed a citroen c5 2005 about 4 years ago and i LOVED IT
Nice videos mate, I star watching this video with the hope you could talk about Mercedes-Benz slk line up, but I really think you don't like them hahaha. That's ok, your videos and information on them are good.
I was crossing my fingers to see the VW EOS and Volvo C70 in here 😅 they are in the budget and the reliability is probably better then some of the ones you mentioned. Otherwise hard top all the way! Good job on the video :)
Hard or soft, I'm a sucker for drop tops!
But old 30's thru 60's ragtops are.....I can't begin to describe how I feel about those 😍
Hardtop bro. Also, cool video!
Agreed! And cheers boss
Great topic. Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you, glad you enjoyed!
Need advice please I have clean licence not driven for about 30 yrs but I haven't forgotten.
Is diesel still ongoing in the uk please? Or will it be banned?
And please will petrol be phased out too? Because am not keen on electric cars.
man i really like ur vids ur so so under rated
Appreciate it boss, glad you like them!
Great vid 👍🏼
Cheers boss 🤙🏽
Saab 9-3s are amazing cars. Definitley recommended in this list havin driven one.
Good little Video 👍
Little hard these Video I would Imagine as so many cars when you think about it, but bit biased here but I got one 350z Roadster a great car I think..!! 😉
350Z roadster is a great shout too! So many other cars I'd like to include for sure, like the XK8 too
Love your vids and using them for my second car choices❤️🚘 what do you think about the seat Ibiza cupra dsg?
Cheers boss! Very cool looking cars for sure, and look good with some slight/tasteful mods too - I'd always go manual but the DSG on the more recent ones changes gears ridiculously quick and has a good little noise too!
My mum brought a E93 330I brand new for around £36,000, oh look how the tables have turned
So crazy man - depreciation doesn't mess about!
MG TF: Mottled Gaskets, Terrific Fun
Haha never heard that before but sums it up perfectly!
Use the LR steel HG and problem solved 👍
2nd petrol cars for young drivers under 10k that are tuneable and good on insurance
Videos to this end on my list 🤙🏽
Had a bmw 1 series convertible for the past 8 years and they are now below £5k - highly recommend that car as I had no issues and the 2.0 Diesel was quite punchy
Very decent - a good little car for sure!
Cars With Cars With JB been a fan of your channel for a while, keep it up. So I recently swapped my bmw for a Porsche Cayman base 2008, which I brought for £10.5k. Would be good to a video from you on what’ top 5 sports car to buy from £10k to £15k
I have a Sprint Blue S4 Cab. I love this car. Can’t wait for lock down to finish and go for blasts. It has had some problems, oil leak, steering rack and the throttle body, but when you have had a L322 Range Rover for 10 years, these are minor hick ups and a fraction of the cost. Lol.
Haha you've got to be committed to keep the Range going for that long!
Nice choice of cars and well presented. I'd be happy with any of those but will stick with my Saab for now😀 I'd have the E46 over the E92 (?) A couple of grand over your budget and you can get a nice Jag XK8.
Thanks Allan! I've always been a fan of the E90 series of BMW (or at least the E91,2,3 - not a huge fan of the 0) so definitely some bias there on my part. Jag XK8/XKR is a great shout, and a future classic in my eyes!
I absolutely loved my red 2001 MR2 Roadster. Great handling and much better than the MG TF IMO
Cool that you had one, I didn't know! But yeah definitely a cool little car
I bought a z4 last summer for 3 grand and for so little money it turns so many heads and is a hoot to drive!
Very nice - did well there!
Cars With JB Thanks mate!
Soft top
My daily driver is a mint metallic green 306 cabriolet with tan leather and yellow foglights. 105k on the clock great fun and rare . Less than 167 on the road and looks awesome with the roof down
Very decent - such a good colour!
I think hard tops are better because you can't key out a hole in a solid steel roof
Very fair point!
Commented for the algorithm, like your point of view and also learnt a lot....
Awesome, thank you!
i have a question. although the cars themselves are cheap, are the parts to them also going to cost me less too or are they expensive?
Japanese cars will last and won’t be very expensive to maintain. The same doesn’t go for any European or American car manufacturer. If you want a convertible, go with a toyota/lexus, honda/infiniti, or a mazda.
We need more videos of the mx5 especially during quarantine
I want to do more, just can't get any work done on it properly as I don't have the equipment here!
Good research good selection metal top best but soft keeps shape and look better
Cheers - an yeah fair enough!
BMW hardtop cabriolet is brilliant. Had a 320m sport. Great but make sure you buy a wind diffuser - essential.
Definitely a fan!
Hard tops keep you warm and keeps you dry when it rains?
Had 4 off your list . Hard top all day long due to jealousy. Boxster s great car . TF crap car . Mr2 fun in the sun . But E93 335i best of the lot . 380bhp after remap . Badge looks and power
That's so sick - good car history going! Agreed - 335i would be a beaut
BMW E93 325I and Mercedes-Benz SL500 are the best ones! And definitely Hard Top Convertible are better than Soft Top Convertible, not matter if rest boots space, are more resistance... But Volkswagen Eos must be in the list
I have owned a vw EOS for a number of years now , the roof mechanism requires constant maintenance, forever having to lubricate the seals otherwise water pours in ,damaging sensors etc . I've just paid out over £1000 to have mine fixed. Had a megane mk1 convertible, with the soft top ,kept that car 14 years, never had an issue with the soft top .
Need to check your info on Saab 9-3 Did you get your info from a Janet and John book
I like hard tops. Soft tops ruin the lines of the car. Great vid 👍🏻👍🏻
Fair enough! Cheers boss
Great Vid man!
But as a BMW fan, gotta correct you 😀
Only the E90/1 4 door versions received a face-lift in 2008. the E92/3 coupe/convertible version received a face-lift in 2010
VW EOS sits in here, glass tilt and slide sunroof in the hard top. Been driving one for 10 years. Bit unreliable and leaky, but a great car and real 4 seater
Missed out the Focus CC - such a nice car
Saab 9-3 is the best in this list. Even the Arc will go for $500-2000 and it’s still a pretty quick car. Also hardtops are more practical but Soft tops just look better
I've definitely been sleeping on Saab for too long!
+1. I'm on my 4th 9-3 convertible. If Saab were still making them I'd be looking to buy my 5th 🙂
As an MGF mk2 VVC owner I have to comment ! MGF mk1 & 2 came with 1.6 115 bhp & 1.8 litre engines the latter with 120bhp mpi / 145 & 160 bhp VVC & when the TF facelift version came out it had 135 & 160vvc bhp variants so I’m surprised you didn’t put the 160 MGF or TF in this list ?!
The k series engine is a fantastic performer in probably 24 different cars like the freelander, lotus, rover & MG cars
The problem was an underdeveloped head gasket & poor maintenance over time however this problem was solved by land rover who developed the multi layer head gasket & if it’s fitted correctly with everything changed & upgraded as it should with proper maintenance they should never fail again ive had 5 years of trouble free driving in my MGF roadster very underrated smile a mile driving fun & faster & more agile especially in vvc form than you think !!
Rag top over hard top convertible ✊
Great vids & info featured in your reviews 🤙 to add no 160 bhp engines were made under MG’s new owners from 2007 to end of MGTF production in 2010 they were all 135 bhp N series engines that don’t suffer with head gasket because of the engine & head gasket modifications if memory serves 👍
Hard top, Keep warm in winters. I'm not a one season guy.
Yeah got to agree - hence I'm a fan of the hard top roof that came with my MX-5!
Why is the VW Eos overlooked in this category? It's a great car, well built with the best convertible hard top roof there is.
My hard top mx5 sport I love it so much 😭😭
Hardtop any day of the week!
Always hard top. Soft top cars look like you couldn’t make your mind up between a car or a tent
Haha that's ruuuude
here in uk its the hard-top due to cold wet winters. soft tops here are just for summer time only, for me best hard top covertibles are either vw eos or bmw 3 series e93 or bmw 4 series but obviously you wont get a 4 series for less than £5000 just yet, so hard tops for me, only other option is a bmw e46 soft top convertible with a fibreglass winter hard top which are pretty hard to find on ebay.
I had an MGF and it was a great little car. By now the original headgaskets would have been replaced with an uprated one so as long as you look after it you won’t have any issues. I’d have another one now if I could insure it 😕
Also with an intake the induction noise right behind your head sounds insane 😉
Ah cool to hear! I've got very limited experience of them, but would love to have a go in one
@@CarsWithJB They get given alot of grief but they're good little cars for the money.
Mentioned the SLK, but this should have been included instead of the SL500.......more popular and more affordable. Overall though a really good summary.
Hard top all the way! Like on the Ferrari Portofino, California and California T
And definitely with you on this!
Literally just got a hardtop for my e36 today 😂😂😂
Haha congrats on the purchase!
Surprised that a high mile Honda S2K doesn't make it onto your list. Better than most of those mentioned IMO.
Hard to find them under £5k is all, I did try!
True.
You can get a 335i e93 for less than £5k with more than 100k miles. Even though they are not very reliable, but you can put another £5k for maintenance , cheap tunes (mhd,jb4) ,low pressure fuel pump, upgrades turbos and you’ll be pushing around 500+hp
Yeah very nearly put the 335i instead but the 325i was the slightly safer option/can get better condition for the cash!
MX5 NB owner with a detachable hard top. Upgrade to a Boxter S or Z4 or stick with the Mazda.....?
Stick with Mazda for this money put v6. And u get a great car
Personally I wouldn't go Z4 unless you go Z4M, but maybe test drive a boxster S if you can and see how it feels!
I love my 2003 Miata NB! Stick with it.
I think i'm late on the video i know lol, but i wanted to look at the great cheap convertible cars. And I prefer the hard top over the soft due to water issues and people could ruin it and it's expensive to repair.
Yes, A4 cabrio 👌🤩 top.
soft top, 205 cti springs to mind !!!!!
I'm thinking if I end up with the budget I'll switch from my current Rover 75 to a hardtop convertible for the summer, possibly a 308 CC or something else, it'd have to be a hardtop because I live in Finland, a hardtop is fine but with a softtop I'd have to keep it in a garage half the year.
Yeah that makes sense - even in the UK a soft top isn't particularly useful!
@@CarsWithJB I drive whole year no issues not cold we still have heated seats and heater lol
@@CHRIS198490 what car do you have?
Oh I always thought the MG TFs were front engine fwd
Same ngl I didn't realise they were RWD!
E92 not 93
@@c3bam1 I think you got the wrong commen, but:
e92 refers to the coupe body style.
E90 refers to the saloon body style
E91 refers to the wagon body style
E93 refers to the convertible body style.
I'm not exactly sure if I got the numbers right but they used diff numbers for diff body styles
Me Honda jazz has a glass roof......perfect all weather compromise. And ivtec!
Very decent actually!
And a Honda Jazz has the ability to demolish a volkswagen polo's door mirror
i have z4 it has 350 000km not sure how much miles is that but its lot i guess plus i didnt change anything on it just oil and filters when i bought it on 300 000 still driving it its good looking fast cheap and look still awesome for 15 years old
Very decent - Z4s are definitely a future classic imo!
hard tops look better usually but there are soft tops that look good too
i wish the new m8 had a hard top
Yeah agreed - and the M8 in particular is a beaut!
Hard top convertibles could you please make a video on the best of then under 20k
I’ve got a BMW 3 series M sport convertible 2010 model. Owned it seven years !☝🏼 it’s fun to drive ☝🏼it’s not a boring looking like the rest of the run-of-the-mill ..you see around ,,I calling them blenders.. 😜....the M sport still drives like new ..it’s a keeper💪🌈
Very decent - I love them, might be my next daily!
Cars With JB .. Go for it mate they’re cool looking coupe , it’s a blast with top down , very versatile, 2+2 loads-leg room
I have a BMW 1 series M Sport convertible and a new shape Audi A3 Cabriolet at my disposal, both lovely but as the BMW has been to the South of France twice it's the Audi that goes there in a couple of weeks
had a mx5 nc 2007 was a great little car but was rusty as hell underneath and so traded it in for a mr2 roadster 2002 great little car no rust at all ! all mx5s are great cars but rust away underneath !!!
Yeah the rust is such a bad part of them! I was lucky enough to get one that has seemingly had a lot of rust protection in its life, which is a huge help
Just got myself a 2005 a4 convertible.. 2.4 version.. tell me i haven't made a mistake
LETS GOOOOOO
Nice discussion about hard and softtops. How about taking an MX 5 with a softtop and if you want you just put the hardtop on top of it ;) Problem solved
What about opel astra cabrio?
What about the CLK 500?
Hard top convertible beats soft top any day of the week and twice on Sunday, for stability, quiet, safety, and basically because rag tops start looking like crap after just a couple years, and have to be replaced every decade or sooner in most cases. Hard top has the one draw back (at least in my BMW 328i) of costing about $20,000 for a new top if the old one decides to die, though I have never heard of that happening, my 2013 was hit in the rear with the top down in the boot and came a fraction of a millimeter away from having to get a replacement top. I almost wish it had because the car likely would have to have been written off and a new one provided by the at fault driver's insurance. It was 7 weeks old at the time. Suddenly worth about $20k but with nearly $70k in payments left. Still, a couple years ago I bought a 2013 HT conv. 328i with 45,000 miles on the spedo for just $19k and now at 63k on the clock and nearly 8 years old it has never presented a single problem and I have just last week been offered almost as much cash for it at the grocery store by enthusiastic lovers of these cars because they are getting harder to find without very high mileage. Of course in the US we do not have that 15% confiscatory motor displacement tax either. I specifically avoided a newer version just because at nearly 5,000 pound curb weight a 4 piston motor that they went to in 2014 (no matter how many turbos you shove under the bonnet) is simply too small. The motor has to work to hard to push all that weight around and one day those smaller engines will be seen to fail prematurely.
Thanks for the insight! I'm with you on the hard top - for me the soft top only exists to be put down again lol
ive just a audi a3 soft top 89k miles cost me 4.5k with insurance :) 2012 model!
Nice you've done well there!
Hard top always
A5 s line 3.0tdi cabriolet in black. Ok a bit more than 5k but one of the prettiest.
Yeah a very fair shout!
@@CarsWithJB decent performance when they're mapped and still get good fuel economy.
Yeeeeee
Boiiiiiiiii
The slk is such a nice car
More of an SL fan personally!
Mx5 nc with early soft top op look coolest IMHO
I’ve been driven in a z4 and it’s a great car, it’s aged better then most of the cars on this list.
They are a modern classic imo!
Cars With JB for sure!
As Nick Noted said in "Another 48 hrs"
" I'm a rag top man " soft top rules.
Bro, although not the greatest looking car, but you can't go wrong with a 3.2ltr VW EOS for £5k for power and noise for the money
why don't you get an alfa spider then jb?
Thinking about a GTV in the future - would love a GTV Cup!
Soft top convertible is a classic look
No SLK? TT Roadster?
It should be hard tops cuz of the looks but softtops are lighter and also makes a different in the acceleration of the car
Yeah agree on acceleration!
