In the latest episode of “The Mind Shift Podcast,” hosted by Erwin McManus and Aaron McManus, the pair dive into the nuanced realms of leadership, especially within the context of church ministries and volunteer organizations alongside their good friend Pastor Kevin Loo. Recorded on their recent trip to Kuala Lumpur, the discussion unfolds as a profound exploration of the emotional and spiritual complexities leaders face in their roles.
Erwin shares his insights on the intricate dynamics of leading a church where the lines between pastoral duties and managerial responsibilities blur. He reflects on the challenges of hiring and managing staff, emphasizing the importance of balancing spiritual influence with professional boundaries. The conversation highlights how leaders in such settings must navigate the delicate process of transitioning people on and off teams while preserving their spiritual guidance.
A poignant theme throughout the episode is the concept of leaving well. Erwin advises leaders to handle departures with grace and gratitude, viewing them not as failures but as transitions to new beginnings. He stresses the importance of maintaining a positive narrative, both for those departing and those staying, to foster a culture of mutual respect and appreciation.
The discussion also touches on the personal conflicts leaders face, such as reconciling a humble self-image with the necessity of fair compensation for their work. Erwin challenges the prevalent poverty mindset, advocating for leaders to value their contributions appropriately and to ensure their financial stability, which in turn supports their ability to serve their communities effectively.
Furthermore, Erwin and Aaron debate the balance between personal authenticity and adapting to different audiences. Erwin's approach to communication-staying true to oneself while skillfully adjusting to the needs of various groups-is a cornerstone of effective leadership. This adaptability is crucial not only in large gatherings but also in intimate settings, where genuine connections are forged.
The conversation ultimately circles back to the core idea of purpose and meaning in life, regardless of one's achievements or societal status. Erwin encourages his listeners to seek fulfillment in service to others, which he believes is the true path to finding meaning and joy in life. This episode is a masterclass in leadership and personal growth, providing valuable lessons for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of leading with empathy, integrity, and a deep sense of purpose.

Wow Erwin, I needed this podcast so much. I feel a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
We just left an organisation that said we should be there for life, and if we left our lives would be in shambles.
We decided to leave anyway because we knew that God called us to something more.
The leaders from the organization are doing everything to destroy our names by saying things that aren't true, saying we betrayed them, and so forth.
So thank you for this podcast, it has helped me immensely. It was the correct decision that my husband and I made.

Interesting tenure conversation today! We actually joined a mission organization with the thought we were lifers. Only to find after 3 years that we were being ushered out the door. I greatly appreciate Erwin's response to being fired from a job: it was really God moving us out because we didn't have the courage to move on ourselves. The bad part was only realizing that down the road after much hurt and heartache. I can say we didn't leave well. Thanks for being honest and transparent with what you've experienced.

Great podcast thank you! So much wisdom. I really liked what Erwin said around minute 44, "People who find life meaningful see the beauty in the mundane."

Yes!! starts at 42:50 with Pastor Kevin Loo's question "why do (some) people find everyday life menaningless", and caps with Erwin at 44:22 "people who find life meaningful see the beauty in the mundane, and we spend/spent our whole life trying to escape the mundane or avoid the mundane, but people who actually find meaning in life see Beauty in the mundane" - mic drop! Good take away!

This was so good.💯 I have so many things to think on. And will probably need to watch this again... so many nuggets!
    Some takeaways:
    Purpose vs. success.
    Serving gives my life meaning.
The standards I have for myself aren't the same as the standards I have for others. The path I walk is different than others. But I can share what I have learned along the way to help others.
Recently I have been discovering things in me that I had no idea were there. Currently I'm reading a book about unlocking creativity. It's been lifechanging. Seems amazing that by reading a book in community, transformation can happen.🤯
And then that part where Pastor was talking about how he can he be a pastor and an artist. That was another 🤯, why can't I be someone who is both? Why do I just have to be one thing?
    Answer: I don't.
And like Erwin said, It's up to me to do the work.💪 To find what I want and learn and grow in those things.
    I really enjoyed this one!❤

You guys do a great job!! Love listening to the podcast.. sometimes i wish you would be more clear on the role of a pastor, is it just to make peoples lives better?
Salvation, heaven, hell is not bad to mention these things once in a while.. these subjects are also the role of a pastor along with these other subjects

I hear you. I'm not a pastor, but I feel Erwin bringing a lot of love, care 33:18 & integrity, that seems very distinct to me 32:40, but I don't listen to many other folks, so it's difficult for me to be objective.

Aaron, I don’t think it was your Mom thinking success looks bad on you. She is clearly for you. But I wonder if she had those outside of your circle’s perspective in mind. Those who actually aren’t necessarily for you. 55:39
