Elko serves as the economic hub of the Ruby Valley, a region with a population of over 55,000. Elko is 21 miles from Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains famously dubbed the Swiss Alps of Nevada, providing year round access to recreation including hiking, skiing and hunting with access to over twenty alpine lakes. [8] The city straddles the Humboldt River. Most of the residents in Elko live within the Tree Streets, houses lined with trees and greenery. Elko is the principal city of the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area, a micropolitan area that covers Elko and Eureka counties. It is the largest city for over 130 miles (210 km) in all directions, making it, as its city motto states, "The Heart of Northeast Nevada".

Were from Hawaii and we visited Elko, two weeks ago. Most say its a rest stop to Salt Lake etc. I see Elko soon becoming larger than it ever expected not just because of its mining which a great source of pride and resource for the town. As the town grows and gains its recognition on the map I do see it diversifying into other things than just its gold. Lots of cheap land for sale and with the new technologies that now turn desert fields into rain forests (nanoclay) its only a matter of time now before great changes happen. Coming from the island were fortunate to have steady warm and sunny weather so on our last day it snowed and we thought what a blessing as it was a great experience. I feel that the people of Elko are truly blessed with a beautiful lifestyle and location. Pour your hearts into the land and show it compassion and it will bring you happiness and satisfaction throughout your lives.

@@cosybully in a sense it already has. Right now it is actually at just the right amount of people. But im sure it will continue to grow as the mines expand there underground and surface pits. Not to mention the newer technology coming into play that will change the role of mining itself. People from all over the US are flocking to this county due to the high wages.

Water is from wells (not the nearby town of Wells, haha) I think
Livable weather depending on your preference, it gets hot in summer (frequently above 100 but usually not by much) and in winter it's 20 or below most of the time
Spring and fall are very nice and summer is nice if the heat doesn't bother you during the day

I live here, if you dont have mining experience then dont move here because it is hard to get jobs at the mines with no experience. And that is were the money is made. I see alot of people all over the US buy land out here that is absolutely useless because they dont understand the markets out here and think that there land in the middle of no were is going to be worth 50k an acre yet it wont ever. At least not in our lifetime.
