      I think she doesn't speak for herself. As #1 she is obliged to represent voice of others. She is right as we don't want more matches but more high quality matches. IMHO best tournament so far on WTA side was Madrid because of optimal schedule. We had lot of high quality matches coming from top players even in early rounds and great final on top of that. Madrid starts 3 weeks after last serious hard court event (Miami), so all top players are properly rested. Madrid follows WTA 500 Stuggart that starts weak earlier and with its indoor conditions serves great as soft transition from hard to clay season.

      @@piqo44 Agree. Of course, as #1 Iga speaks not only for herself, but represents the voice of others. The WTA level of play, intensity, and energy are much higher right now, than 20 and yet even more than 40 years ago, when Navratilova competed on the pro tour, especially comparing her low energy serve and volley game. It's ridiculous to hear hateful remarks from some of the legends - it's straight forward hate, shameful, and should have no place in any media. They attack Iga attaching to any ridicules. They speak to launch a hate campaign toward Iga. Why even to conduct interviews with such "legends" or invite them as commentators for the tennis matches and tournaments, "legends" who hurt tennis.

    I think what she is suggesting is the amount of play the top players are required to commit to is too much. The key word being commit. For the non top players, more tournaments are the way they survive. Top players should be able to cut their schedules back 20-30%

    Long Comment.
    There are so many players who are burnt out; it's not the length of their matches, it's the travelling time, the prep and the training. It's not as though they know they only have to get to a certain point in the year and then there'll be a break for 6 weeks, it is week after week of the same gruelling physicality, both women and men. Yes, they earn millions of dollars, but when you're just playing tournament to tournament from week to week (many so that you can defend points), the money is probably not something you consider - a Top 50 player is not living the lavish life of a top 5 or 10 ranked person. I feel as though there are so many players whom we could see more of their potential if they were rested, more often. Rublev, Kasatkina, Gauff, Pegula, Medvedev. It's easy to say 'if you lose early, you don't have to play as many matches', but all that actually means is that you can arrive at the next tournament earlier, annoyed that you've lost points; it's definitely, not a break.

    • @57too

      More players will start doing what Novak does now. Pick and choose and tournaments be damned.

    • @melanieruawai3363
      @melanieruawai3363 4 месяца назад +2

      @@57too Picking and choosing is great, but Novak can afford to do that and most players, cannot. Rafael took a massive break due to injury and although his ranking dropped significantly, he probably didn't even realise how much it affected him, financially as he could afford it. There is no way a Top 50 or even a Top 20 could play a Tournament and then take a break for 2 or 3 weeks without it costing them a lot financially or losing a lot of points.

    The WTA is hungry for money. It doesn't care about the players. They are literally cannon fodder for the WTA. The player's position is determined by the ranking and the necessity to participate in tournaments. If they want to rake in money in the WTA, let them have smaller tournaments, optional ones, maybe without such a big score. But they won't do that because there would be too little money there.

    If she needs rest, then play certain tournaments, like other players do, but it isn't fair for upcoming players to STOP their game or goals to reach the top. She already established her career and ready to piss on someone else's. This is another look into Iga's selfish mentality, if she tired then rest don't play so many tournaments, but there's no need to stop the WHOLE PARTY and stop other players gaining points. The thing is she doesn't want to jeopardize number 1 spot, so everybody needs to stop playing, so Iga can rest Not to mention she already missed all of grass season and only played 13 tournaments, they're only obligated to play 15 tournaments a season.
