You're doing great! Your AOE problems will be solved at level 5 with Fire Ball! Also, if you look on the right side of your 'action bar' you'll see a '+' symbol. Click that to increase the width of your action bar (more rows). As you level you'll need more room for all your spells. Finally, Intelligence increases your chance to hit with spells, much like strength or dex for melee classes.
When characters have the wet condition they also get cold damage vulnerability so like ray of frost will wreck your opponents and slow them down at the same time! You can do some wild carnage as a wizard if you keep your distance.

Sure, their spells can be powerful, but they are, indeed, the weakest of all, there is literally no class that is more ( or even as ) fragile than wizards, that's a fact. You can appreciate a class and be aware of their flaws, you know ;).

And before that, could always buy Void Bulbs from Omeluum in the Myconid Colony, to pull enemies into your Cloud of Daggers.
