Two of my favorite fighters from back in the day. Watching this again you can really see how much the game has changed since then. I like the way the game is played but this shit is classic for me. These guys are incredible.
Hughes was more of a wrestler with basic submission techniques because of his strength advantage. Serra was the far better submission artist but less of a wrestler
Same here. The first fight I ever watched was Hughes vs Trigg 1. That’s what got me into the sport and Hughes became my favorite fighter. I hate what happened to him.
When I was a kid I never realized Hughes was so one dimensional. Exept for Judo and wrestling, it did did take the rest of the martial arts community an absurd amount of time to realize how easy it is to trip a guy.
He was strong too. But didn’t have much stand up. Even the fights he won were often chaotic back and forth fights or comebacks. So he was good at winning close fights. GSP seem like a much more complete fighter when they fought-at least the second and third time. Actually had a good jab and kicks

No reason to come back and lose, and damage his legacy when he is already considered by most to be the GOAT‼️🐐💯
3:55 Marcus Luttrell
Holy shit that's totally him
Much much much love for The One And Only Mr. Matt Hughs!
I remember watching this fight, and I knew 100% Matt was going to win this fight😳
Matt who? Douche cake
@@fiddelsworthdinkle Matt. You know, the fighter with the long shorts. Duh!
@@fiddelsworthdinkle You're almost there bud just think a little harder
Well I knew Matt was going to lose
Chael sonnen actually won
Matt Hughes conditioning is on point.. awesome fighting physique
They didn't test for steroids back then
Two of my favorite fighters from back in the day. Watching this again you can really see how much the game has changed since then. I like the way the game is played but this shit is classic for me. These guys are incredible.
One of the best built up fights in TUF history. I'm glad I was there to see it live.
This was awesome! Seeing a grappler vs grappler is just so intense. Anyone could be submitted out of nowhere.
Hughes was more of a wrestler with basic submission techniques because of his strength advantage. Serra was the far better submission artist but less of a wrestler
Its really sad what happened to matt hughes he was the reason i strated watching ufc.he is a legend to me in this sport
@fart nugget Covington one dimensional? Lmao
He was strong too. But didn’t have much stand up. Even the fights he won were often chaotic back and forth fights or comebacks. So he was good at winning close fights.
GSP seem like a much more complete fighter when they fought-at least the second and third time. Actually had a good jab and kicks
@@seanmatthewking gsp was outstriking him before the armbar
@@mauriciosalgadogonzalez2305 yep GSP was the superior fighter throughout those 3 fights but Hughes really capitalized off that submission. Same thing when you look at the Hughes/Penn trilogy the fight that Hughes won Penn was dominating until he got injured and Hughes capitalized.
It would have been funny if Bruce Buffer would have just said "the winner by split decision, MATT!"
by far the best commentating duo in my opinion
How MMA has evolved so much since this time it crazy!
Matt Hughes is proof anyones life can change in an instance...be kind to your loved ones and neighbors and enjoy your life. Matt you are an amazing athlete and even a more inspirational person with your strength in rehabilitation.
Except, apparently to his ex wife and others...
As a fighter Hughes is one of the best of all time period. As a person I’ve heard not so good things about him but I still wouldn’t wish that train incident on anyone.
Whats happen guys?
DUDE!!! The guy beat the fuk out of her s wife on multiple occasions. Then he tried to commit suicide by train!!! He was my favorite fighter until I heard that !!!
The guy was a complete and utter a******. Karma caught up with the scumbag.
Despite how you feel about matt he deserved the win matt didnt have anything to really contend with against matt especially once it got to the mat.
Yeah, I agree, Matt didn’t have shit but a little luck against Hughes.
Al Iaquinta is the Matt Serra of today in almost every way.
Ragin’ Cajun he said Serra not Hughes idiot
@Ragin’ Cajun Do you try to read the whole comment, or you pick a few words and start typing an idiotic response ? Goddamn
Imagine if he beat Khabib Serra-style!
Al surprised me alot. Good dude. Hanging with khabib is no joke. On days notice. Mcdouchebag couldn't even do it. What a stud Al is. Hope the best for him he deserves it.
@@floatinggoose9197 I guess I might be guilty of that at times :)
I want Joe Rogan to follow me around my whole life, and when I get hurt Joe can say “OOOOOHHHH HES HURT”
... and when you stop you buy a hotdog in the street and ask for chili topping, Joe will be right behind you saying, "We call this the Chili Dog"
Great fight!
Thanks.
joe: aaaw look at this…
That reversal by Matt in the 3rd was insane
yeah dude, Matt is absolutely great in this fight!
How can I not stop and watch Matt Hughs
Wow. First time watching this fight and omg. Awesome
Matt Serra looks like a mini-GSP
Thanks again for these 👊
This fight lost it's hype due to injuries and several postponement.
I'm struggling to think who either of these guys would be favored against in current top 10. The sport has really advanced
Imagine non-USADA VS USADA!
In his prime Hughes beat GSP. I would say he would do very well. He was really skilled and a beast.
@A prime Hughes wouldn't crack the top 5. Prime Serra doesn't beat anyone in the top 10. Period.
If they were still fighting, i would imagine they would evolve with the sport.....lol.
Hughes beating the fuck out of Royce and renzo is the real evolution. MMA is just really well rounded with better conditioning and gameplanning
No matter the winner, both are incredible fighters.
Seeing these two fight at welterweight makes me appreciate how far advanced MMA athletes have become. In today's standards, their movements are so sluggish and easy to telegraph but at that time, these two were at the top of the division.
They where also past their prime then. Dumb statement.
@@johnsambo9379 Neither of them ever had good striking.
@@calebhu6383 matt serra prime and prime hughes would fuck up colby usman and jorge gtfo

@@Gogeta2501 Nice bait

But for me it would be it would be still a competitive fight for Usman Colby vs matt Hughes and GSP
I was able to meet Matt recently. Great guy it’s a shame about his accident. He put this division on the mat. When country boy can survive played the crowds exploded.
How’s he doing?
You know he abused his wife right?
@@Vincent-un6jb if you have diarrhea once, does that mean you always have diarrhea?
He (Hughes) is not a great guy
@@MMAVoodoo no one is perfect. Adesanya jacks his dog off.
I love both of this fighters matt sierra is like the big brother you always wanted and Matt is like the little brother you wanted
The flying knee was not invented yet obviously
God Bless the legend Matt Hughes. Hes been through a lot in and out of the ring
The more i read - i think the guy you replied to knows this and has a brain. compared to you. His statement is accurate
@Jack Adams because your so perfect right? I never judged his character, I just said hes been through alot.
He's a dirtbag but I wish him a full recovery.
Serra escaping that choke was beautiful
"I'm not impressed wit you performance" damn GSP was badass he lost to both for title then won the belt from both.
Avenged via finish too
Gsp may be goat
Matt’s in the biggest fight of his life right now! I wish him well and happiness.
Me too I hate what happened to him
When i use to play ufc undisputed, i was nervous to fight matt Hughes cause his grappling was insane in the game
“Matt Serra his wife Ann just welcomed a baby girl to the family”
-Goldberg
Goldberg was corny but the ufc still did him wrong
“Always pays his taxes on time does Serra” -Goldberg
@@MinoritiesRlazy 100 %. I miss telling him to shut up as he's telling the fighters life story while all kinds of action is taking place.
16:14...The look on Serra's face is priceless!
He just completely died inside damn lol
Both class guys... this is what ufc is all about.
Serra was legit!!!👊🏼👊🏼✊🏼
It's kinda depressing to see Hughes in his prime vs what happened to him and what he's like now.
Damn what happened?
@@emekao502 He got hit by a train while driving his truck and now he's disabled
@@newfjuice6691 that’s unfortunate, I’m just now really getting into ufc but I’ve always just known his as one of the greats
that kinda stuff happens to people alot its just that we dont hear about it much because they arent famous athletes/ufc fighters, lifes crazy cause one day you are strong as a bull and the next you are in critical condition in hospital fighting for your life or worse
It’s amazing to me how many people don’t know about Matt Hughe’s accident🥺 I watched a documentary on it.. They never did say how it actually happened 🤔 The way my brain works is that I’m always wanting to know the how’s and the why’s and he doesn’t remember the minutes right before the crash
This card, UFC 98, my favourite of all time. Look it up, it had so many shootouts.
When Matt and Matt where little boys, they used to lie on a mat together and do their math homework.
We want habib here in the round 👊👊
Wtf is habib?
Man MMA was so archaic just a decade ago. We’ve come a long way.
Matt Hughes was my favorite fighter. Such a respectful fighter with a very kind personality while at the same time a very deadly man. Its really sad what happened to him
