    After color grading your footage the first time, I got a lot of comments where you guys wanted me to do it again, so here we are with round 2 of me grading your footage.
    I cover a bunch of different color grading techniques and tips for grading in Final Cut Pro in this video. These tips (as well as a whole lot more) can also be found in my Final Cut Pro Color Grading Masterclass. In the course I cover a whole lot of different color correction techniques as well as step-by-step tutorials on how to achieve certain looks. I also go over different scopes and tools that lay the foundation you need in order to color grade any footage. If you want to learn more about the techniques being shown in this video and whole lot more, then this course is for you. If you enrol in the course you also get priority access to me, so you can ask questions and I can help you with your color grading. If you buy the course you will also get my Fire & Ice Vol I LUT pack for free as an added bonus.

    What is fantastic about this tutorial, is Brad picked IMO very common problems. I had the exact same issue as the first example in the video, (even the same camera I have :). Also Brad is naturally gifted and & super fast at making decisions. I hope to just get better by watching him, even if I never will be as talented !!! Keep these types of videos coming!!!

    Thanks for sharing this. I have a question on the footage. If i want to use adjustment layer. Which one should be top layer, the rec709 conversion or the color balance. Thanks.

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  Год назад +1

      I would add the rec709 conversion first, so if you are stacking adjustment layers, make that the bottom layer. If you are stacking all the effects onto one adjustment layer, make sure it's the first effect you apply 👊🏼

  • @The-Filmguy

    Hey Brad, I used to use CG but lost confidence in it because the edit screen of CG did not match the viewer screen in FCP. So when I was happy with the correction/grade in CG I was often unhappy with the results in FCP. I found myself having to off set grade in CG to get the desired results in FCP. Also there was not enough option in the save effects menu. I mean 'colours' and colours that are very similar to each other making for confusion when applying a saved effect! There should surely be the facility to 'name' the effect such as in my case 'Tom in blending room' or Bill at wood turning lathe' etc. so I could safely apply the saved effect when that scene was revisited along the film sequence. What's your opinion? I have paid for the app but don't use it so feel that I have wasted money. Thanks, Drew.

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  8 месяцев назад

      Hey Drew! Good question. I haven’t noticed a difference between the two windows when I use it. Maybe it’s a bug that would be fixed with an update?
      As far as saving the grades. Another option is to apply CG and do your grade and then click on the “Save Effects Preset” button at the bottom of your inspector window. That way you can rename the preset to whatever you want and create your own custom preset category to store all those grades for that project. Hope that helps!

  • @BillSmithBSartist

    Great video as always. One thing I’m left wondering… Why do we want to apply exposure before the LUT yet white balance after?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  Год назад

      Thanks Bill! 😄👊🏼
      The main reason is that it’s more difficult to correct the white balance when the shot is so washed out and undersaturated. It’s easy enough to adjust the exposure, looking purely at the waveform scope. When you’re using the balance color effect, it struggles to get an accurate white balance on log footage, compared to rec.709, so it also helps to apply the lut to get the footage into a rec.709 color space, and then to correct the white balance.
      Hope that helps to clarify things.

      @@Brad_West very much so. Thanks!

    Great video. Do you not use color finale anymore? I saw in some older videos you were promoting that. Or do you prefer the built in color grading tools now?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  5 дней назад +1

      I use both! I often use the built-in tools for tutorials so that more people can follow along 😄

    • @TheBikeFather
      @TheBikeFather 5 дней назад

      @@Brad_West Thanks. I'm at a crossroads. What would you recommend, please? Obviously, from a RUclips perspective, it makes sense for you to create videos using the built-in tools, as this will appeal to more people.
      However, for someone who has Color Finale and needs to make simple edits-nothing too complex-would you suggest I learn Color Finale or the built-in tools? I want to try to use a tool consistently and get used to one workflow, rather than using both tools.

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  5 дней назад

      @@TheBikeFather If you are doing simple edits and grades, the built-in tools are more than powerful enough and they are really easy to learn. If you need more advanced tools like tracking masks for grading then I would learn Color Finale. Color Finale can do everything the built-in tools can do and then obviously more advanced things too.
      So I'd say, ask yourself, how involved and advanced do you want to be with your grading? If it's simplicity you're after, go for built-in tools. If you think you need or will grow into the more advanced tools, then stick to Color Finale.
      If you have already bought Color Finale then it might be worth getting used to it off the bat. Hope that helps!

    3:02 Personally I wouldn't boost the saturation that much, if at all. Especially not when also using the S-log3 LUT. If the LUT was not applied the saturation boost would definitely be necessary. But other than that I think this video gives a lot of valuable tips and tricks on how to color grade in FCPX. Good job!

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  Год назад

      Thanks for your input! I found a trend with my corporate clients, where they prefer a more saturated image, and with this being a corporate looking interview shot, it felt necessary to boost the saturation.
      One could of course, not saturate the shot as much if that is the look, you’re going for 😄👍🏼
      Appreciate you watching the video and taking the time to comment. 😄🙏🏼
