Makes sense from a pedestrian safety standpoint. When I was a kid I used to wonder why the hood ornament on my Uncle's 1990 Cadillac Brougham was very springy. Or why the seatbelts in the front seats were mounted on the doors. Or why the gas filler was behind the license plate. Now thanks to Google, I know the reason for the door mounted seat belts, and having to flip the license plate down to put gas in the car was actually a very common feature in the older big body styles from GM for many years, especially Buick and Cadillac, until 1996, when the Cadillac Fleetwood, Buick Roadmaster & Chevrolet Caprice was discontinued & GM stopped producing body on frame passenger cars.
I wish the center gas door hadn't gone out of style. No having to remember what side your gas door is on and having to find out when you get in a different car. As far as pedestrian safety, if they'd stay out of the way of cars it wouldn't be a problem.
@@bwofficial1776 apparently the little arrow next to the gas icon in your car tells you the side the gas cap is on 😃. But I always thought the center gas caps were such a good idea and really cleaned up the designs of cars during that time and would do the same even now
@@megatronusorionpax4900 While some people may think good idea, but imagine having other drivers have to see your butt crack while unscrewing the cap. I'd rather have them on the side
"i had to draw it because the pictures were not youtube friendly" XDDD made my day (also, i'm not watching the reviews lately, my life's too packed, sorry)
in the middle east they love those things. even saw inexpensive Toyota pickups and Mitsubishi cars with manufacturer logo hood ornaments everywhere 20 years back. seemed like every car had one
I think there was a trick where if you lined the side of the road up with the hood ornaments from the drivers perspective you would be able to tall you were in the middle of the road.
Loved this video. But I thought it was too fast! I slowed it down so I could enjoy the footage. Also your voice over was great! But again, it felt fast!
The pedestrian thing makes sense, but think about it, if a pedestrian gets hit by an SUV, they will go under it and get smushed. If we're really thinking about pedestrian safety, let's tackle that first
Well that’s because the hood ornament was attached to the car. However, if I do design a hood ornament, which I am planning on doing then here’s the plan the hood ornament is titanium however, the support Poll is aluminium designed to fail at 60 Lbs of force it’s 100% full proof.
Thanks for the knowledge. I had no idea they could impale pedestrians in an accident. When I someday attach an eBay or junkyard Spirit of Ecstacy to the hood of my rusty Yugo, novelty microcar, or Geo Metro (a man can dream), I'll be sure to not attach it firmly so that it will get ripped off in a crash rather than enter someone's eye socket. Maybe I'll attach it with a rubber band.
nothing about hood ornament theft? that was definitely a thing in the 80s. i was wondering if the govt mandated breakaway systems (for your safety of course) made them easier to steal.
The Beastie Boys and other rappers might have contributed to the reason they got rid of them, since they used them as a trophy (Mercedes ornaments) to hang around their neck as 80s or 90s 'bling'...
These mini documentaries are my favorite thing to watch lately. Keep it up

I KNEW IT, freaking Buscesmi! No one believed me, after all these years I am finally vindicated. Thanks Zack 🙏

Another one knocked out of the park bro. Your car reviews have gotten better and better. Truly honing into these skills of yours.
I agree.
close to 100k subs, all well deserved 💪 keep up the great videos my man
Great work, Zack! This is your best video essay yet. Not just sayin that because two of my cars are in it. I learned something!
What about a video on front bench seats and why they went away
Zack, I watch all of your videos, but these essays be on point! Keep them coming.
"i had to draw it because the pictures were not youtube friendly" XDDD
made my day (also, i'm not watching the reviews lately, my life's too packed, sorry)
I know people love the hood ornaments because it makes larger cars easy to park
You should do a video on rear spoilers on vehicle's.
Phenomenal video essay man. Thank you for this!!
Same here.😊
you're amazingly close to 100k! you deserve it dude, I bought my first car because of one of your videos and I definitely picked the right choice
What did you get?

@@MobyTheMerpup1852 😆 I meant what whip did the brother get.
@@PhatLipstickOh okay.
As a little kid, I accidentally broke someone’s Lincoln hood ornament wiggling it around. The cable broke.
I think you should do a documentary on Steve Buscemi...I mean radio antennas.
in the middle east they love those things. even saw inexpensive Toyota pickups and Mitsubishi cars with manufacturer logo hood ornaments everywhere 20 years back. seemed like every car had one
A little more and we’re at 100K!! (As of the time I’ve created this it’s at 99.9K. Seriously!)
These are the best .,.. you should post these once a week ... Love from Nigeria
I always wondered why my dad's old dodge ram had a hood ornament that was springy! I always thought it was solid, till I messed with it one day
The Steve Buscemi thing caught me off guard. As a Steve Buscemi fan, I approve. 🤣

This video is going to push you past the 100,000 subscriber mark for sure. So, may I be the first to congratulate you?
These are the best!
I have a Lincoln continental jubilee ornament very cool stuff
So close to 100k!!!
.....one of those ''aahhh!'' moments. 👍
Our 2001 Land Cruiser had it too
I really want a hood ornament for my Lexus gs300 but nobody makes them for Lexus
There's a guy near me who mounted a big hood ornament on his Avalon. All it takes is a drill.
I just recked my gold 2002 Lexus GS 300 🗿
A video essay for oil. Or 710 fluid.
i love the documentaries

Radio antennas
Chrysler had ornaments on it's cars in the 1980s but many of them broke off. They discontinued them in the 1990s after they ended the K car platform
My dad worked at gm...they were told it was a safety issue....the ornaments would tear a childs head to pieces.

There are few phrases more terrifying to hear then, "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help."
Theese Videos are amazing
Antenna decorations took over and now nothing

ANd some like the car shown isnt even a real element anymore just a little clear piece of plastic with a picture of the emblem
Darn Steve Buscemi

they're kinda weird looking on new cars too
But they still look right on some Mercedes-Benz models, like the E-Class, C-Class and S-Class.
