Can I use contrast paints through an airbrush? Yes.
Why don't you use an airbrush on your channel?
I usually don't like to exclude people who don't have access to an airbrush...
However this video shows you how to use one of my now traditional contrast paint schemes with a very accessible airbrush that you can pick up for, along with the compressor, for under $100. @NEOECO-Airbrush sent me some very budget friendly airbrushes to test out and I would happily recommend these as a great way to start out in airbrushing, or even as a good way to test out if you like it before investing more. If there's anything I didn't answer about airbrushing, please let me know below and let me know what you thought of the video as well!
Here's the link to the airbrush I used, which is currently available for $39, and then you can add the compressor as well

I actually store parts of my airbrush underwater in a hypersonic cleaner at all times I’m not using it so it never dries. Saw this on another channel and it works really well.
Huh. Will have a look into that because that sounds like a pretty good idea! Cheers man!
@@MediocreHobbies I watched one of Tabletop Minions videos about airbrushing and that’s what he said he did.
Crikey, this is one hell of a video which has fired my rocket about airbrushing .... something I've always been scared to use. You are The Messiah matey.
Hey keep that to yourself……….. can’t have people finding out.
This has been a super helpful video. I’ve wanted to dip my toes in on the airbrush aspect of painting. Thank you for the simple walkthrough.
Anytime pal. Glad it helped.
Got both of thoes airbrushes at the reccomendation of barbatos rex and he has not steeted me wrong. My only gripe- which was self inflicted....is that I left some cleaning agent in the cup and didnt empty it for a few days. It did corode the chrome pff the insode of the cup. So be careful, but you know what? You get more with the kit! So thanks neoco: for being smarter then me and providing spares.
Hahhaha for sure.
I love these simple tutorial videos. It's always good to remember and remind folks that you don't need a flagship airbrush to do most work, and it's not a super complicated thing to use an airbrush. It can be an intimidating thing to pick up an airbrush, so props to you for making it look friendly!
Cheers pal. Glad you liked the video and got the message.
top man, love the honesty with your vids. thank you :)
I shall stay honest I promise. No B.S here.
I got my first airbrush last weekend, this video was great
Aw great to hear that! If you have any questions let me know but you’ll learn best from practicing!
@@MediocreHobbies I have managed to break it or blocked it somehow, there is no paint coming out of it anymore but the airflow is fine and the needle moves when I pull the trigger? I googled around and most suggestions are that its not tight around the nozzle since I got bubbles in the paint cup at first before I took it apart but I think the nozzle is blocked now. Is this common? Im using a H&S Ultra, not the most expensive since its my first time but still frustrating to have to deal with just as I got started
Fantastic video. Think I may invest in one come payday, it'll make painting tanks etc easier, especially for the smooth result.
So much better for tanks.
Good one, thanks. A few basic videos on the cheap air brushes would always be cool, but there are plenty of other channels out there with the more advanced stuff. Personally, I love what you've been doing and can always get something more from those. (Especially the vehicle painting vids, I've got those saved.)
Thanks pal. I have zero Plans to change my hat or how i paint. Don’t worry there.
Always pulled needle from the back.. will change it up now.. thanks for this. Been airbrushing for 3 years and never thought about that tip.. pun intended
Ye if you pull the needle back your pulling paint through the whole thing. I made the mistake with me eclipse for years.
@@MediocreHobbies This is really a useful trick.
Love that you showed how little you really need to get airbrushing. Really good stuff
Yeah it’s a pretty simple way to add a lot of speed to your painting, especially for stuff like scenery! Glad you liked it!
Cool and useful as always.
Great to hear, thanks so much!
This video has been a super confidence boost 👍 thanks Andy.
I wasn't confident in purchasing an Airbrush before let alone how you use or look after the bloody thing lol
Now I'm definitely going to order one and have a go.
Thanks mate.
Cheers pal. Glad it helped.
Literally got an airbrush this past week. Would love to see some beginner based videos.
Anything specific? Happy to make some, just need suggestions for topics!
@@MediocreHobbies I know you generally use contrast in place of base paints for speed, but with airbrushing that's presumably not an issue - each is as fast as the other. So I'd like to see you use contrast over your zenithal in more of a slap chop style, to see how that works.
Would also like to see you do a vehicle and spray shadows and highlights, giving any tips on how to do it or where to spray, etc.
Arguably the best intro airbrush video I've ever seen. All the basics shown and no complexity. Airbrushing is surprisingly easy to learn but hard to master. As long as you don't get the bargain basement airbrush (which should go straight in the bin) then it can be a joy.
100% agree pal. Thanks for the kind words.
Mate this is insane. Every time you do a tutorial/tips video, the way you break it all down blows my mind! Make everything look so simple and easy for anyone to follow, but the results are equally insane!! Would definitely love to see more airbrush videos from you Andy, so so good! Great content as always 🔥🔥
That’s so kind pal. Thank you. And yes more videos will come.
@@MediocreHobbiesand I’ve now bought one of these along with the compressor and cleaning pot 🤌🏼🔥
Thank you love you’re channel
Cheers pal. To kind.
Recently purchase an airbrush and this video did a lot for demystifying the process. Would enjoy more like this for sure
Glad to hear pal
This has finally pushed me over the edge and has me throwing one of these into my amazon cart
Awesome pal. Glad to hear.
Better get my airbrush going having a taunar still gray. Great video ❤
Very jealous.
That was a really useful video, I'm looking for an airbrush but don't want to spend hundreds of pounds. These look great! Thank you
Anytime pal.
check out the Fengda FD-186k. it's almost half price compared to when i got it a couple of years ago, now sitting at 110€. you get a decent compressor and an airbrush - a perfect place to start.
Your tutorials are always so clear and I genuinely follow some of these step for step and I never get that feeling like you've jumped ahead or cleaned something up between steps so that your results just look better and unrealistic to someone newer like myself. Keep em coming, especially some more airbrush stuff please.
Cheers pal. Very kind.
6:05 a "zenithal" application means you only apply paint from above, like the sun when it's at its zenith (straight above). i feel like the word has become just another buzzword people throw in without knowing what it means. sorry, i just had to point it out as it kinda bothers me :D a lot of people use the word "drybrushing" instead of "overbrushing" too, which are two very different techniques :P anyways, great video as always :)
Yep I know. It’s an always habbit i need to fix.
Please teach more about airbrushing.
What you described happened to me exactly. I used it, (the cheap one with the compressor…) worked fine, ran water through it, “clean” next day. Didn’t bloody work.
I’ll do what you tell me anytime
Also there is no Amazon link to the airbrushes
Ye those really cheap once are more hassle then there worth. And ye so shall make more videos.
Another fine video, thanks! I would love to see more on airbrushing.
Cool beans pal.
Basic airbrushing videos are few and far between. Thanks for the video, happy to see more 👍
Anytime pal. Glad you liked it.
That looks like an amazing airbrush for such a cheap price. I've also got an Iwata Eclipse but I've ordered one of those Neoeco brushes to give it a try. Getting three different needles with it is very cool.
Oh for sure give it a try. Glad you liked the video
@@MediocreHobbies And it arrived yesterday! They had a 10% off deal so I got it for $36 / £27. Amazing. Looking forward to giving it a spin now :)
@@dwadlandgood to hear it arrived quickly, mine is still ‘in transit’ - hope it arrives soon.
Always thought about buying one but never used and a bit hesitant at what to buy and how best to use. Thanks for the video.lots of food for thought.
Cheers pal. Glad it helped.
That is EXACTLY the video i need, thank you !
Anytime pal.
Really enjoyed the video. Would love to see more airbrush content.
I shall be doing more don’t worry.
Excellent, I’ve always been reluctant to get an airbrush.
Well I hope this helped.
Really enjoyed the video. I would definitely like to see more airbrush content in the future 👍🏼
Awesome.
Great vid
Cheers man
Once again, amazing work!
Cheers man!
Iwata set the standard for quality and design that's now the basic norm ( disclosure I've had iwata airbrushes for over 25 years got 2 sparmax,s along with a general use spray craft "for basic spraying 👍 decent level of detail attainment got out of it " , the hardest part of using any airbrush is getting the paint mix to the correct consistently which comes with time
Oh ye for sure. Mixing paints could
Be a whole other video with how important it is.
Absolutely fantastic video mate (as usual)! Couldn’t have happened at a better time. Been eyeing my gladiator, but have been trying to figure out if this would be the best and looks like it will be the route to go.
God you liked it pal.
HA HA that’s what it was. I bought a cheap airbrush forever ago that I threw out because it stopped working the day after I first used it. Took it apart 3 times trying to find the problem. Definitely gonna pick up another cheap one after this.
Oh no! Hopefully that will keep working for you 🤞
People think airbrushes are expensive they aren't you can get a good compressor for dirt cheap as well these days. I still use my cheap greenstuffworld airbrush a year and a half later. No real issues with it ever .
Also damn I think I might have to check this out ha it seems way more of an expensive brush than its actual cost nice!!
Rite? I thought the same when I seen it. Looks top shelf.
I see it very useful for larger surfaces or minis , like vehicles, but I'm afraid that I can't be so detailed like with the brush. Anyways I'll try it during this year.
No you cannot. You cannot take the brush out of the painting process. But it for sure speeds up the process.
Great video. I love that there is a cheaper way for people to get into airbrushing than the $200 plus H&S. Only thing I would add is that you should use a mask when airbrushing, the cheapest mask from your local hardware store should be enough for most water based paints.
I always do wear a mask! I meant to mention that in the video as part of it but completely forgot during the voiceover! Definitely an important thing to protect yourself
Comments for the comment God, amazing airbrush tutorials for the people that appreciate them!!!
Likes for the like throne!
Thanks pal.
Really enjoyed this video. If possible similar video but with a character/troop model. Great content as always. Cheers mate.
Sounds like a plan pal.
Realy nice video as always! Unfortunately i didn't have the space for an airbrush, but as soon as i can move into another apartment i will give it a try, thanks to you ;)
Love from germany as always =)
Cheers Max
Cheers pal. There a good tool. But not needed. Just an extra.
Great video and something I need to get into for my WWII stuff. Cheers
Glad you liked it pal
I want to get an airbrush some day so I would appreciate a few more tutorials
Of course. People seam to like them.
Love the result ! Do you have the link for the compressor thought ? I really want to start the air brush and this one seems perfect !
It’s from the same company so just follow the links and check for other products
Wonderful intro to airbrush. As a beginner I use this exact model since a few months, and I’m quite happy with it. The needle system is much more practical than other where you need to screw it with a little tool and possibly break it. The only downside I found is the cap that is bigger than common ones and seems there are no alternatives
As in the cap for ontop of the cup? I never used them. But they seam like great brushes. Big fan.
@@MediocreHobbies Nope, the cap protecting the nozzle. I’m not sure of the name !
Would love to see a "tutorial" of how these cheaper airbrushes handle OSL effects such as the glowing lights from the boarding actions terrain.
Or if you fancy a challenge glowing OSL marine eye/helmet lenses with fluo paint
The drop-pod came out great, makes me seriously tempted to pick up a "cheaper" airbrush
I like my airbrush setup overall compared to brush painting. I use mine for base coating and zenithal but my needle size is 3mm so it plugs a lot. I ordered this one and hoping the 5mm is am improvement so I can start priming with it as well. I say go for it, especially if you don't like painting as much as the model building like I do.
That’s not a bad idea at all.
@@ReverendPONT Haven't tried airbrushes yet and this looks like a good jump on point at a reasonable price point.
I'm the same often like the building and kitbashing as much, if not more than the painting.
Now just need to make space in my hobby setup for the airbrush to live in 😅
most tutorials you see on youtube use cheap airbrushes like these, so there's really not much difference between a cheap and an expensive one when it comes to something like OSL. my current airbrush was even cheaper than this - i bought a new one rather than pay almost the same for a new needle and nozzle. the compressor i bought (which came with a free airbrush) was 180€ when i bought it a couple of years ago. last time i checked it was down to 110€ . it's a good time to buy an airbrush for sure! :P
@@warpwingminis yeah it does take up space lol. I bought a carrying case/bag for the compressor and gear to store when not in use. Nice thing is setup to use is really quick so it's not a chore and breakdown to store is quick as well. Most time consuming part is cleaning the airbrush but that's kinda fun to do, for me anyway lol.
This was a very informative video on airbrushing. Thank you so much for posting it. I have purchased the Iwata Eclipse HC PS but am kinda afraid to use it because I am still not comfortable trying to airbrush yet. You made it look easy and I am quite sure it is. After watching this video I am going to purchase one the airbrush you used in this video and use it till I am more proficient using my more advanced airbrush. Please make some more videos using an airbrush. I love your channel and have learned a great deal from watching your channel. Thanks again mate!
The only way to get better is practicing, don't be afraid to make mistakes. It's only paint and you can always start over. If you can get a few cheap kids toys like plastic tanks etc it's a good way to test out stuff on as well! Thanks so much, and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!
I have an airbrush but never really used it. Want to learn more about them
Anything specific? Best way to learn is by practicing painting(even on cheap kids toys) and then figuring out what you need to improve!
saw the same airbrush on another channel looks like a nice one just wish i could just order it from amazon or ebay . would love to see more airbrush being used in ur vids
You can order it from Amazon. Glad you like
The video.
@@MediocreHobbies i should have said that it comes up we cannot deliver to ur area on amazon and on ebay its £70 + £35 delivery + customs on top of that
Oh and yes pleaase to a meadiocre airbrushing series...I think particularly for vehicles and troops etc,.base coat, spray shadow, spray highlight, optional panel lining....people can add edge highlighting if wanted...that for troops and vehicles is my airbrush ambition...get troops and vehicles done faster.
Sounds like a plan pal.
@@MediocreHobbies I took the plunge with your link 😁
I would like to see more air brushing videos
Cool beans pal.
I'd love an airbrush, and I can afford one, but my biggest issue is space. I live in a really small house, and I'm not the only person who lives in it. I worry that there isn't enough ventilation for the paint that would be put into the air.
Of your only doing small bits at a time like a tank or 10 guys it won’t affect anything. If your doing basecoats on an army then yes it will be a bother.
For the algorithm! Great stuff mate
Cheers pal.
Great video Andy. I've recently came back to this as I am going to purchase the airbrush and compressor kit because of this video and recommendation :D
Can you please confirm if the airbrush compressor comes fitted with a type G plug, or will I need to buy an adaptor? Thank you :)
You can chose what region plug you want.
@MediocreHobbies thanks Andy. I only entered my region when placing the order as the UK, so can but hope that it has a UK plug on it. I never noticed the part at the bottom to change, so that remained US! 🙈
Interesting video Andy, do you wear a mask whilst you’re using the airbrush? And what are the over spray fumes like for other people in the house?
I do indeed of im going to be airbrushing for an extended period. For a quick coat on a tank no. But I probably should.
Nice video. Thx. I m thinking about buying the one you show to begin with.
What about using it in an appartement? It is well aerated but I have a kid at home.
Does the compressor make noises ?
Thx for your kind help
If your only doing small job then it’s fine. If you plan to airbrush for a long time then maybe a spray booth is in order.
While this may be a cheaper airbrush is has very nice features not seen on brushes costing 4 times as much.
My thoughts exactly
Son "can we have harder and steenbeck infinity?"
Mum "we have harder and steenbeck infinity at home"
Bahabhahaha basically
Definitely prefer that you keep airbrushing to a minimum personally.
Makes a nice change every now and then but yeah, prefer the "normal" brush vids. 👍
Oh it will only ever be a minimum. Maybe one video a quarter don’t worry about that.
I guess the next thing is to try that out on something like a Repulsor or a Land Raider and show how to paint tanks 😁
Not a bad idea at all.
I think I might get one of these myself. quick question if that's ok? Does the compressor come with a US or UK plug? And if its US did you just use an adaptor to get it to work?
You can order it with either plug.
So you would recommend this as a atarter? 70 euro or so with the compressor. Very nicely priced.
Yes I would indeed. Great way to get started.
Nice video. A few questions:
-How loud is the compressor with this airbrush and how hot does the whole thing get?
-How does the build quality feel? Do you think it will last for 6 months/a year?
-Presumably it comes with a US plug type, as it is shipped from there. Is this the case?
-Top trigger airbrushes look as though they could be somewhat unwieldly for someone with small hands. Do you think this would be the case or not?
The compressor is quite enough. And it’s only on when your holding down the trigger and then it shuts off.
I do indeed think it will last it is all metal and feels nice. The website also has the option to buy any part separate. I’ve never seen that before it’s so good. So if you need the needle or lose a part no problem
@@MediocreHobbiesah thank you very much. I actually edited my comment and added a few more questions, if you have the time to go over them.
Mine has a European plug so it has both options. And no I much much much prefer top trigger. So much better control for where you want to to the paint.
@@MediocreHobbies Marvellous, thanks ever so much for your time and responses.
Nice video ! i'am considering buying one. Do you thinks it s usable in a bedroom ? it's where my paintstation is so i wanna know if it's gonna bring a mess in the room or not :s. Is this setup good for painting smaller minis too ? ( space marines incomin ahah ).
Yep I reckon it will be fine if your doing a few hours at a time the. Mask and maybe a.l spray booth. But for small jobs your all good.
@@MediocreHobbies thanks !
airbrushes shoot a very fine, concentrated cone of paint that doesn't reach very far - they're not like spraycans (which i think most people assume). trust me, unless you're TRYING to make a mess, you're not going to get paint all over your bedroom :D
Do you thin the contrast paint at all? Also does airbrushing black templar on your black templars work still in that tutorial instead of adding it via brush?
Nope straight from pot.
And ye Steph templar will work perfectly.
I am looking at buying my first airbrush and your video makes that one look really good! as you said I don't want to spend hundreds on an expensive one to start, but how loud is the compressor?? I have young children and 90% of my painting is done once they are in bed.... that's what has kind of always held me back from buying one
It’s a good compressor for that as it’s only on a but when your spraying it idols so fast and makes no noise when that’s happening. But I does make some noice so I can’t say for sure.
@MediocreHobbies ah that sounds really good, so it's not constantly on making the noise only when spraying.
Thank you for the reply, its really helpful 😁
@@danax8977 exactly.
@@MediocreHobbies thanks again for the reply!
This might be my next hobby treat😆
Pro tip: keep a thermos of boiling water with you and flush with the hot water. Works wonders between colors.
Well damn. Great tip thanks!
This looks great and something that looks great for a first step! Does it come with a US plug?
It does indeed you can it it with either.
Would this work for applying Black Templar over Leadbelcher for the Black Templar dreadnought scheme you did before?
Yes it would indeed.
How did you find the compressor on this? I got one just after Christmas, but I found the compressor took up too much room in my little home office/hobby space. Something like this would be much better for me!
I was pleasantly surprised. It did a great job. And like you I hate how big and unruly the standard once are. I’m going to continue using this one.
Would you say that when using a airbrush like this that it is necessary to get something like a mask or some manner or spraybooth?
Yes 100%. Ventilation is important I use sparay booths and if your spraying for any extended about of time a mask kid a solid choice.
Im painting up my leviathan box and i've seen people highlighting the lower halves of the angled armour plates how should i approach this, will the airbrush blend the two colours together or do i need to do multiple increments?
That’s a question for a more experienced airbrusher. Im not quite sure what you mean.
Did you notice an appreciable difference between the two of them?
Not really. The one you see me use for the video is the better one apparently and feels a little better in my hand. But as for results it seams just as good.
Not airbrush related, but where did you find those 3D Flesh Tearer logos?
They’re from cults3D!
@@MediocreHobbies Thanks - guess I'm getting a 3D printer for my decidedly off-meta angry vampire boys ;).
I got one of those super cheap, battery powered airbrushes just for priming minis and it's not great so these look a lot more like what I was after. How loud are they?
Ye I’m never thought they were going to be any good. Glad you shared so I knew for sure.
Moved to an apartment building with not much opportunity for spray priming anymore (noo you can't have aerosols) 😭😭
Can you use regular citadel black base paint as the prime layer or would it be better to get something like one of those Tamiyas black/white ?
There are airbrush primers. I’d say grab one of those.
I just bought a Badger Patriot 105 for priming LMAO
Hahah nice.
For the algorithm!
Thank youu!
All hail the RUclips algorithm gods...
Hahaha yes
regarding airbrushes, given the amount of time we spend painting minis, and how much GW minis cost, a few hundred shekels for an airbrush doesn't seem out of line.
True!
What is with that inhaling tick?😅
Honestly I have no idea. Only happens when I’m recording never on my Normal day to day. It drives me crazy so I have no idea how you all put up with it lol
What’s the compressor like 7 months down the track?
I’m going back to a bigger one. It’s still really good but the max being about 30 psi closer to 25. Just isn’t cutting it sometimes.
behind on the algorithm comments…..Flesh Tearer’s!
Hahaha thanks.
Would you use a spray booth, or do you think that is overkill ?
I don't bother! I don't do enough of it and also don't have the space! If you knew you were going to do a lot of airbrushing it might be worth it but it does take up a lot of space
@@MediocreHobbies would you not worry about inhaling the paint ?
I just bought my first cheap airbrush before you posted this, thanks for making a video on it. You have a weird way of posting videos after I buy something, it’s starting to get suspicious… 😮
I hacked into your email account and plan all my content based on your order confirmation emails, nothing to be suspicious about 😂
Yes more air brushing videos.
Yes sir.
NO!! Swapping to a smaller needle and nozzle doesn't give you a "finer point" to be more precise. That comes from trigger control and practice. All needle size determines is the size of the pigment particle that will pass through the nozzle without clogging the airbrush at a given air pressure and dilution. ie; inks and dyes go through 0.1-0.15 easily, Acrylics through 0.2-0.4+ etc. Also you said you put loads of water through the 'brush when you were finished? No airbrush cleaner? If you've cleaned it out properly there's no reason to be taking your airbrush apart. Plus, the only thing that should be going in the nozzle is the needle!!
Please go and watch an "Introduction to airbrushing by Ken Schlotfield", he owns Badger Airbrushes. It's about 1hr 30mins. He covers choosing the correct airbrush type for the task you want to accomplish, why there are different needle and nozzle sizes. How to clean the airbrush, between colors and at the end of the session. He also tells you what NOT to use to clean your 'brush as well, quite important if you have a Badger 'brush that's still in warranty.
Cheers pal. And no I don’t use badgers brushes.
