- These home made yabby traps, or crawfish traps if you are from America, or crayfish traps if you're from the U.K. are extremely effective at catching whatever crustacean you are targeting. But as stated in the video, PLEASE make sure that you check the rules and regulations in whatever state or country you are watching this video as these types of traps are often restricted depending on where you are located.

Here is a link to the rules for bait traps in Victoria.
If you make your trap bigger than is legally permitted, it then becomes a drum net, and drum nets are highly illegal.

What are the rules for harvesting invasive species like signal or ted swamp crayfish?
Hey Robbie do you get Clyde river spinys down that way astascus spinifer I think
I watch this video all the time. I make similar traps using 16 gauge vinyl coated wire. I have eliminated the cuts that the 19 gauge wire produces I have shed more blood on 19 gauge hardware cloth.
Thank you for this video
Thanks mate, what a great idea. 👍
There will be blood 😂 . I made a couple of crab traps and found that statement humorously relatable
A tip if I may, invest in a good set of tinsnips for cutting the mesh.
They cut light mesh as easily as sheet metal and will save you a heap of time and effort.
Ahhhhh excellent idea. Thanks so much Peter. That would be particularly handy, especially when cutting out the funnel.
When I was a kid I made one like that, they do indeed work.
However my preference is a store bought one that looks like a hemisphere type shape, it has a flat bottom, and it can all fold flat. I find this is the best for transport and for Yabby catch rate. Plus being made of non metal, I can't accidentally jab myself on it, and it won't corrode, I still have this store bought one today, it's about 16 years old and still going strong, it has caught probably thousands of yabbies in total.
Good looking nets. I'll make some with the grand kids these school holidays. Thanks for the great videos.
Wow this takes me back. I used to make these as a kid “ with dads help” for something so simple it was so fun. You could not get me away from the dam edge as I couldnt wait to check the net. Thanks for reviving past memories. ☺️
Haha we had a very similar childhood by the sounds of it mate.
@@robbiefishing Oh yeah very much the same. I was in the suburbs of South East Melb in the 90’s. Saddly thoes dams are houses now. Im in Bendigo now and still love to take the kids yabbying with meat on a string. Old ways are the best I think.
My late grandfather used to make these yabby traps. Had a lot of success with them in the channels and rivers around Kerang in the 80s.
Hiya rob ....Wow
Mate you made reference to the twilight zone .....
Well I feel like I just left it for two reasons.....firstly it was our annual Nco's reunion last night so I think I left my brain behind when I left ..🥴..
Secondly I would make these very traps with the kids and catch prawns in them ,excellent
I would use that plastic garden screen because it was nice and ridged...cost very little ...
Rob you warmed my heart talking of teaching children skills passed down to us from the wiser generation.....
To any mums or dads out there ...listen again to what rob said....anything that is hands on and shared between kids and parents is a winner...and gets them away from there make believe world of playstation and computers.....mate excellent presentation..the very best to all... thank you ..god bless..respectfully...
I'm preparing from part two shortly..full on assault on a bbq 🤣
Excellent rob excellent...
😎🇬🇧......🥴
Thank you so much Michael. That plastic garden material sounds like an excellent idea. I hear you loud and clear with the playstations and computers, Our kids these days are so consumed by their devices that it is really sad.
40 years ago my Dad built some they were works of art , brazed welded internal frame fine stainless mesh covering ,used them fishing in the Murray at Ned's Corner , when He died I donated all his goods and chatels to the Bush nursing Service who had looked after him, but I wish I had kept a couple for my own use . love the channel
Thanks so much mate. I remember my dad making me one when I was a kid too. We put it in the One Mile Creek in Wangaratta. It was full of carp and yabbies. The first thing we caught was a.... redfin. Haha 🤣
There was no maximum funnel size back then.
Excellent video Robbie. I'd snip the point off the hook so it has less chance of snagging on anything like my finger when I'm using the trap.
Thanks mate, and excellent idea.
Thansk man I just lost my crawdad trap when my creek flooded this is going to save me some money
That sux mate. I hope you are able to make new ones like these. They work a treat.
Can safely say the only pie I remember from the school days where ones in a brown paper bag from the tuck shop! Those are some quality traps though, thanks for sharing.
Haha thanks mate. I too have very fond memories from our tuck shop. LOL Red frogs were always a big hit. Haha
@@robbiefishing haha! How good. We had chippie dogs.. basically hot chips with gravy in a hotdog roll!
This brings back memories for me. My grandad owned a 5 acre farm with a big yabbie dam that his sheep would drink from. He used to take us up there on weekends throughout the 90s. He used to make me these kinds of traps from mesh to use as a kid (but like 3x as big lol, private dam on private property plus it was the 90s).
I used to throw a few traps in, go exploring around his farm, get my life threatened by his sheep before returning and catching heaps of yabbies.
Strange, i'm a first generation Aussie, he didn't speak a lick of English yet i still somehow grew up with massive Aussie influence.
Fk i love this country!
anyways, cheers for the nostalgic memory jog Robbie.
Hi Col that is a wonderful story. I remember back in the 80s ans 90s using these nets too, and just like you they were 3 times bigger and so was the funnel. I think the law has changed for the better though to be honest. Even at just 50cm x 25 x 25 these nets are clearly still very effective.
Looks good mate. You picked up and used the end mesh for the cylinder mesh. ❤️🍺👍🇦🇺
The good ol' drum net!
I love that trap Robbie well done I’m going to make one while the yabbies aren’t on the bite
Thanks mate. They certainly work a treat.
GOOD winter haul!
Ha, that brings back some memories Robbie. Exactly how we made yabbie traps as kids in the 60s & 70s. Made quite a bit of pocket money selling hundreds to aquariums for 20c each, until they figured out what a yabbie could do to a tropical fishes tail! :-) On the Murrumbidgee as a young teen they used to make huge ones out of reo mesh to catch Murray Crays, they were so big it took two of us to pull them out of the river and we could walk into them! No wonder the crays all disappeared. Nice video, there'll be kids all over Wangaratta raiding chook sheds for wire mesh! Cheers mate PP
hahaha Thanks PP. I can expect to see chooks running all around town in the morning when I head out. LOL I hope you are staying safe and not getting washed away mate.
@@robbiefishing Thanks Robbie, over 200mls here so far, another 200+ predicted. A bit damp, even the fish are sick of being wet. Might be a good time for an expedition to the north in spring, mate! :-)
Robbie this is great as I said on another video I lost my trap in the Queensland floods earlier this year so a diy trap I can make is great
Thanks mate. That sounds awesome. Just make sure you check the rules and regulations in your state first buddy, I would hate to see you het fined for using illegal fishing gear. 👍👍
Excellent video mate. You can cut that stuff with tin snips or old scissors. I've done the one by one snip on that sharp bloody stuff 🤣
Thanks mate. Haha It's amazing how many times you can cut your fingers and not actually die. LOL 🤣 Someone else suggested tin snips. Excellent idea.
@@robbiefishing hahahaha
This came into mind for me this morning. For those sharp edges on the sides and the opening where you would stick your hand inside, you can line it with automotive vacuum hose (I had saved my old ones which are about 3/16 of an inch or about 3mm inside diameter off one of my vehicles. Now I have a purpose to reuse them.). Take a box cutter and cut through one side of the vacuum hose down the length. Then line the sharp metal edges with the hose and secure with zip ties.
Hi mate, thanks for the great idea.
Love your maths calculations sadly many of our young ones don’t know a thing about Pi
Love the demonstration and explanation well done
Thanks Peter. I was surprised by how it came back to me after all these years. I just remembered it. I didn't even have to dig deep into my memory, isn't that amazing.
If you are had a good teacher you very rarely forget what you were taught because the emphasis was on learning so you wouldn’t forget
LOL I had to use that formula about six weeks ago and I left school in December 1967
Brings back lot of memories .
Great veido on making of the traps. Thanks.
Thanks for watching mate. 👍
Made similar ones, also include a bait box for the meat etc and suspend against each side some the yabbies don’t eat the bait from the outside. Love your videos mate
Thanks so much Ron. They ate champions at doing that. That's why the bait is often found pulled through the wire. LOL
Nice work Robbie. I was thinking, some tin snips might’ve been handy too lol🙂✌️
Thanks Tubby. LOL A few people suggested that. 🤣 I've never even thought of it. I'm not much of a handyman. Haha
Make a garlic cream sauce and cook the yabbies in it. So yummy
Thanks for sharing. I will use your plans to catch yabbies to feed to my pet Murray turtles.
Awesome. Thanks mate, good luck. 👍
so good very much so a lost art Robbie. I've got 2 young boys myself 8 and 5 and you have just inspired me to make some myself as a weekend project.
I remember making them up as a kid with empty plastic coke bottle with tops cut off and made into funnels and if we were fancy made some up out of 90mm pvc with home made funnels
Thanks Rohan. haha That is so awesome. Don't forget the band aids and maybe some betadine to paint spiders on their finger tips if they cut themselves. LOL
@@robbiefishing It will be a learning experience for all... maybe will start with pvc ones hahah.....There's something about round bait/yabby traps they always work better I used to have round colapable ones and for some reason they always work so much better on Shrimp haven't seen them in years.
wow they came out looking amazing Robbie! I reckon if I made them they wouldn't be anywhere near as neat haha. Nice haul for the middle of winter!
Thanks mate, I was stoked. Lauretta was with me when I put them in and I told her I was hoping to get 1 or 2. I said "Wouldn't it be amazing if I caught a dozen". LOL Then I caught 3 dozen. Haha
Thanks for the tips robbie. I went yabbying the other day, next day I grabbed the net, realised there was a huge hole in the net. 🤣
Haha that sux mate. Maybe a water rat damaged the net?
@@robbiefishing we have wild red deer on our property, and there were footprints near the net, and the pond was really shallow,so maybe that is what it was.
Do you shoot the deer ?

Nice mate. My uncle shoots deer sometimes on his property 👍👍👍
We went camping this weekend on the Murray and we caught our first ever Murray cray, how cool do they look!
WOW Jimmy they are really awesome, I love them.
If you want to put dog biscuits in your pot well put the dog biscuits in a sock works good

Thanks Robbie! Gonna make the trap! (from Bran who is 9 and literally jumps up and down when you post a new video)
Thank you so much for your kind words Bran. Just remember that if you live in a different state you need to check up on the ruled buddy as they are different in each state.
Like having ya Dad show ya how to make something lol. You're awesome Robbie. Keep it the good work. All Robbies are awesome lol
Thank you so much for your kind words mate.
Sick chanel mate I know it's an old video but I reckon I could suggest an improvement. Make it square instead of circular, 6 faces that fold flat, removable funnels. Pack down nice and flat, but still sturdier than the nylon nets that will get smashed if you catch an eel by accident.
Thanks mate. That's for the great suggestion. It sounds like a great idea but I don't know if I would have the know how to make them that way.
@@robbiefishing You sell yourself short mate. The pi stuff and rest of this video is more than enough.
Might be able to attach some small hinges, but honestly some wire ties and a set of pliers would do the trick. More set up and pack up time, but fits in the backpack with the inflatable kayak when taking the motorbike or hiking in 🙂
Good stuff Robbie. Why make 'em? 'Cause ya can!
Thanks mate. Haha exactly. The same reason so many people make their own surface lures these days. LOL It's rewarding catching them in a net you made yourself.
Nice vid mate, fishing has been horribly slow during this winter. Going weekends with only catching a couple fish. Cant wait for it to warm up!
great work robbie its like being back at school doing metal works 👍👍
Thanks mate. I would have better luck at teaching maths than I would at teaching metal work. LOL
Love the how to man! Great stuff tried a few on my channel myself. Love your stuff!
Thanks so much mate.
G'Day Robbie. Thanks so much for sharing mate.... I think just from my point of view its just easier to buy a trap on Ebay :) Cheers mate.
Haha thanks Robert, I think that is the case for most of us. When I was a kid in the 1980's we didnt have an eBay shop in our town so I had to make my own. LOL
Nice trap mate. Mesh is very useful for making lots if things 👍👍👍
Thanks mate it sure is.
great vid mate like always hope your family and you are doing well.
Thank you so much Sash, I hope you are all well too mate.
Shed tour 😁
Should do it live so we can ask questions and it will be easy for you
I don't mean to sound like Mr know it all but they can get the bait from the outside if you could strap the bait up so it's centered in-between the entrances and it cants be eaten from the outside you may double your catch....tight lines my friend
Thanks Ben, absolitely they can. That why yje fish skin was hanging out the edge of the wire. Haha 🤣
You have a very creative mind mate, good score on that dam
Thanks Jordan. My wife was with me when I out the nets in and I remember telling her that I just hope to catch 1 or 2. I said "Wouldn't it be amazing if I caught a dozen". Never did I expect that I would catch 3 dozen. haha
Yes well you had very good luck being -1 degree in pretty sure you said, I live in the norther rivers area of nsw, and it’s very rare I catch yabbies in winter time
You made that look very easy, not sure with my skills I could do one of them LOL WOW, shocked at how many you caught, might go throw a trap in this week. Thanks for sharing Robbie, enjoy your Yabbies!
Thanks Larry. I was certainly surprised with the result. If you decide to put a net in, good luck mate. 👍👍
@@robbiefishing Thanks!!!
Good one mate we used to make similar ones when we were younger always liked round traps with big funnels 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cam, so did I. There were no size requirements to worry about back then.
Great work Robbie I just watched the whole thing we used the same bait Redfin head I went cod fishing today and I have a new Pb twice I got a 58cm so new Pb and then a 70cm nearly pulled my rod in that had a yabbie tail and worms
WOW that is excellent. Well done mate. I will check it out a bit later on.
@@robbiefishing I don’t have video out yet but I posted a short of the photos but I did get them on camera
Hey Robbie - top video! I agree totally with you on making stuff for yourself! Sometimes it is just so satisfying! :)
You spoke about how rules differ from region to region - as a good example, you used redfin as cut bait in one of your yabbie traps, which is legal in Vic, but in NSW and SA it is a strict no-no to use redfin as bait in any way, shape or form, dead or alive.
Redfin are not yet classified as a noxious pest in Vic, but it's only a matter of time. it is already a noxious pest in most other states.
Even though it is not illegal in VIC, transferring redfin between water systems (even when dead) is still a bad idea as it can result in them spreading via unhatched eggs attached to the dead carcass, and also spreading diseases they carry, particularly to native fish stocks.
Anyway - love the vids and always look forward them coming out!
Thanks so much mate. I reckon if someone got fined for using an illegal bait or an oversized net and said to the Inspector "It's because Rob is on RUclips said it's ok" they probably wouldn't get off. Haha
Jake Stewart yabbing yes please 🥺
hey Robbie mate l collect whiting heads for snapper bait and freeze them LOL
best bait for the big guys here at Clifton springs in the season
Haha awesome. I love salvaging my old fish heads and off cuts and using them for bait. Haha
That style of trap catches eels here in qld..

Nice work sharing your way of making your traps, definitely a lost art.
Winner winner yummy yabbie soup for winter dinner. 35 winter yabbies is crazy but hey you don’t complain that’s for sure.
I’d love to see the goodies you’ve got in your craft box, I bet you’ve tied your own flies and made your own spoon lures. But more importantly stay away from the Pi 🥧 Robbie, they 3.14% aren’t doing you any favours😜

hahahaha The only Pi I have in my mouth was talking about it while filming this video. LOL I have nor dropped below 130kg for the first time in 6 years and i'm feeling great. I have had a few slip ups, but on the whole the trajectory is downward.
great video i wish Iwe got yabbies in Coffs.
Where is Coffs? No yabbies where I live either. I wish we had red clawed crays here.
Coffs is in nsw
@@gregsimmonds2230 If you're netting Murray crays in NSW, the regulations are rather tight. Should be somewhat different regulations for yabbies though. I have to look up regulations frequently because I fish and trap in 3 different states. One state let's you keep about 4.5 kilos of native species, with no limit on invasive species. One state let's you keep 100 crayfish regardless of species. Some states require a license or permit, some don't. And some individual rivers or lakes have their own special rules.
.
Rules change periodically, so always double check before you harvest.
.
At least one river in NSW has non native red clawed crayfish. Dont know if you're allowed to harvest them though.
Beautiful! Great work Robbie they worked pretty well mate. 👌
Hey Robbie, I put my details on a piece of paper inside the plastic bottles.

Hi mate as far as I know it is later in winter.
Great job Robbie, I might try this great invention one day. Keep up the great videos.
Thanks so much mate.
This was an awesome vid Robbie. Loved it!
Thank you so much.
If you live on private property do u have to follow the rules and regulations if you stock your own dams with yabbies
I'm fairly certain you would still have to follow the regulations, as a lot of them are in place to protect wildlife and fish. As an example, a larger funnel size could allow platypus or rakali to become trapped and drown.
Hey mate, I can't say for certain but I think Rohan might ne right. I know that Opera House nets are prohibited on private property for the reasons Rohan mentioned, but I'm not sure about the number of nets, bag limits etc...
@@RKJFishing ok thanks
Those traps are really effective because once they get in they can't generally find their way out because of the cone shaped hole.

Hi Neil, I just typed a lengthy reply to this comment on the other video. If you can't see it let me know and I will copy and paste it here.
Yes Robbie l’ve read it and l’ve found a dealership in Kew that handle that type of kayak thank you for the quick responce much appreciated
Is a yellow belly the same thing as a golden perch? Is a red fin an Engilsh perch or a pickerel?
.
You should be able to catch yabbies in dams all year, depending on water temperature. I've caught signal crayfish in water at high elevation that temped at around 8°C, but never in winter. Lakes and ponds do sometimes have active crayfish in winter- especially if there is thermocline layer of warmer water several feet below the surface. The ideal water temp for catching yabbies (and most crayfish) is 13° to 25° (if I did my calculations right 56°F to 77°F). If the water temp is below 5° or much above 30°- that's not conducive.
Thanks mate. Yep, Golden Perch is a yellowbelly, and a redfin is an English Perch. In Europe they usually just call them Perch.
@@robbiefishing Thank you. You keep making videos and I'll keep watching them.

Victoria must be the only place in Australia where you can use what you are showing, because of Platypus saving regulations.
As long as they are within the specifications they are fine and shouldn't catch any platypus.

Is using dead redfin as bait allowed in Victoria? I know it's illegal in NSW. I can't find any info on it for Victoria.
Hi mate, i would be very surprised if it was illegal. Why is it illegal in NSW? I know we are not allowed to be in possession of live redfin, and not allowed to relocate live redfin, but I am unsure why you would not be allowed to use dead redfin as bait. I will have to look up on that.
@@robbiefishing I sent a link to NSW DPI stating it being illegal, but, I'm assuming the link gets the comment automatically removed.
Cant use deceased fish as crawdad bait!? That sucks. Is "red fin" the same thing as red red fin perch aka yellow perch, aka yellow belly perch? I just hit a lake yesterday. Baited my traps with bluegill and pulled them up after 45 minutes. I got 88 crayfish.
I thought it had something to do with a virus that redfin can carry and spread to native fish, but I could be wrong on that.
It is currently legal in Victoria, but it's only a matter of time till Redfin is added to Vic's noxious fish list and the rules are updated to match similar rules in NSW and SA.
I have pet Blue Yabbies and lots of babies that are getting sold weekly
WOW that is really awesome.

Yep, u used the off cut instead of the measured piece. Classic 🤪
For which part?
@@robbiefishing the main body u made was shorter because u put the first piece down on the ground then u cut the next piece which was meant to b for the end funnels on the ground next to the first piece, then u cut the door section, and when u started making the main cylinder you must of picked up the piece u cut for funnel ends. 😂
