  • I demonstrate how I position, mark and inlay round fret position markers and side dots into the fretboard with a forstner bit on a drill press, using mother of pearl dots and plastic rod side dots.

T/U Eric - like the 'laid-back' commentary on yer vid - I jus' (stuck) put some very thin abalone 'diamonds' ('cos I cudn' cut circles..lol) in sim'lar positions on my 'new' Classic..'cos I can't play - yet..but I'm sure this vid will be an incentive to go 'up-market' later.. in any case, it was well good enough fer me to 'subscribe' and find all yer other 'How-to' vids.. thanks a lot..

Thanks you for getting me over the last hurdle of my very first guitar build. The key piece of info I needed--how to drill the side dot holes--was thoughtfully provided. Thank you for your generosity in helping others do this rewarding luthiery work.

I thought I was the only one running drill bits in reverse for certain jobs. Nice to see someone else noticing the advantage it can have when fabricating literally anything.

Running the bit in reverse is equally (if not more) about preventing chipping and gouging out of the wood.

Very good and helpful. Thanks. Can the dots be scraped or sanded flush ?

Very nice tip about using the awll prior to punching the points. Definitely improved accuracy. I also really like your tip about keeping the shavings. I’m putting some dots in a pre-radiused fretboard. How would you suggest installing these? Do you leave them slightly proud and trim them with a razor?

Super. A little question to do. Do you polish the motherpearl dots to shining effects ...and How ? Thanks a lot.

Any particular reason why you don't use the depth stop on your drill press for the position markers?

What’s the size of the fretboard dot here? And the side dots? Thank you for the video.

My new Yamaha APXT2 has NO 3rd fret marker.... how frustrating.....

  • @fingersmike

Any extra considerations when putting side dots on an already finished neck? I got a nice guitar with missing dots and am considering installing Luminlays instead of returning it

  • @BladeJones

I'm going to be installing 1/4" side dots on a throw-away bass for open jams. Could I get away with using plain old wood glue? And how far in should I drill for the plastic rods?
