  • My volleyball career wasn’t an upward trajectory, there were many more valleys than peaks, more setbacks than successes. This is a story about my journey, pulling back the curtain a bit on the challenges I’ve faced along the way.

Not gonna lie, I never thought you were so close to stop playing volleyball! I love the way you show that feeling of "what am I going to do with my life??" that many of us have when we are at some low point in life to the thought of going on a completely different path in your life and career.... and how you managed to recover that love for the game that was taken from you because of the anxiety and pressure... A great video and very inspiring. Congrats!

When he said he could only play on sundays I related so much my heart felt so relieved that somebody as strong as him had the same situation as me right now. I could only ever play volleyball on a very old cemented basketball court that we had to climb to get to (because it was located up a hill) but that was enough for me, everyday we go there hoping to play a single game since there are a lot of people. Once we play we lose almost all the time but it's okay I was doing it just for fun. Then it hit me, why not take volleyball seriously, it's the only sport i can play during quarantine and probably one of the few things i have going for me in my life. So here I am, constantly looking to improve, never letting the hunger get satisfied, constantly watching volleyball plays, moments, stories. I am in love with this beautiful sport. And I thank these people who share these stories and I ask of them to keep going, because people like me absolutely love your videos

  • @RenegadeBJJ

These past couple of videos you guys have posted have been amazing. Stories like this go to show that no matter your direction, everyone has moments they question the path they are on. What is remarkable is that regardless of the obstacles placed in your path, you persevered. I work in physical rehabilitation and I've seen athletes that have injuries that sadly never come back the same and that crushes their passion for their sport. I commend you on your work ethic because it's hard to climb that mountain once, let alone the number of times you had to at such high levels of competition. Glad you both stuck with your convictions, beach volleyball culture would not be the same without you both!

Thanks for sharing - that's so inspiring! I hope I can find your passion and love for volleyball.
I started vb at 40, and I loved the game so much for a long time. But, after 10 years of trying to master mechanics, I still find myself on the losing side of the net -- to the point where I feel like maybe I'm the reason people lose (?!?) I haven't played with any regularity in a couple of years - it's just not fun to lose. After watching you talk about your story, I've realized that the most important part is having fun - if you can't have that, then it's just a bunch of work. So, rather than give up, I you've inspired me to go back to the beach and play for fun and love the game. Thanks!!

So awesome to see your love of the game expressed in that moment. Thanks for the inspiration, I need that hope...46 years old trying to become a better hitter, waaay undersized and bad technique, but love when it all comes together...love the game, and often wondering if the training is worth it. I think you've helped spur me on just a little with this and other content you guys put out, so thanks. I'm glad you stuck it out and glad your brother pushed you toward the beach. Grazie. Grazie davvero. Your story is inspiring and allows me to believe I can find again the joy of playing on the beach court. I broke my knee the first time when I was 16, my career as a volleyball player was just starting and I had to stop for 8 months. Then I came back and after a while I was there again, starting in main team, playing and block as the hell... But a couple of months later I broke the same knee for the second time. Again surgery, again the pain, again the rehab and then back to volleyball. It was crazy, but I started to play again. Then, after that I seriously injured my right elbow... I thought I was done. Anyway I decided to play beach volley. And here I am. I hope to have the strength you had and to find my way here... Even though I'm not a pro, I believe I can have fun again. Thank you! And come back in Italy! We have food and sun! :)

And i recently dropped basketball to play volleyball, and i'm not regretting that decision what so ever, because volleyball got my emotions back what i've lost during the last years, because of injuries and the ego filled in basketball, and i couldn't just take it anymore. I love watching you play, esp with your brother. You have so much talent, but the mental side man. When you’re on the court sometimes you just take over. As soon as you’re able to shed that fear of a let down you describe in this video you’re going to excel to one of the top blockers in the world. I see glimpses man, it’s self belief and confidence.

Greek mentality in professional sports (or come to think of it, in sports in general) is not the best, most people demand results ASAP and don't necessarily tend to the players' needs as much as they should. Bruh you give me so much inspiration. I could never imagine you falling out of love w volleyball, you were the most happy positive dude(imo). I'm in a place where life is before volleyball, but the distance is making me long for more volleyball. No real team or partner, just pick up games at the court or beach, all I can do is play my best for whatever team I'm with. I got a fire in me to get back on the train for a medal, indoor and or beach. I just know the game is calling me back longing for me too. Keep on keeping on😎🙏🏽👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I watched you win the avp in San Francisco, it was incredible I had no idea that win meant so much to you. You played your heart out.

I cried my eyes out in my car after losing finals to a better team 23-25 in fifth game. Because I wanted to win and couldn’t do anything more. I touched every ball I could. But I didn’t dig them. It was the end of playing competitive ball. I couldn’t handle the realization I was done. But after some great talks with a friend I was cool with what I had accomplished. I felt like I could finally play for fun maybe. Either way i would still be asked to play competitively but I asked to be a sub not a starter. And I could help with my voice. On the sidelines. And still have fun with my friends. And still beat my enemies(opponents) lol. Hopefully you keep finding all those things that keep you playing into your fifties

This was pure motivation for myself, I had my set of setbacks, people saying things like you can not do this, do that, and I proved them wrong. Everything you do, do it with love, fun, passion and every time I am feeling like you did in the beggining, I just watch this and I am fully motivated for anything.
    Peace and all love :D
P.S. what is the name of the song at 8:10?

I've come back to watch video a few years later only to find it has moved my heart even more than before. Maddison, the emotions you touched on are so precious to many of us that play volleyball. For you to have shared how you overcame such struggles to do what you love means so much. Keep playing with joy!
