Extraordinarily talented. I know it's a long vid at about an hour and a half, so you can easily watch it over several sessions. If you have the time available, just start and my guess/experience is that you'll never find a spot where you want to quit! PS: When I watch/listen to Doyle, I realize that I don't really play guitar, even though I've tried for over 50 years. I've made a few bucks over the years. I can entertain, but this fellow brings the most beautiful music possible from a 6-string or 12-string guitar. God bless you Doyle, as he obviously has done for a very long time!
I met Doyle back in 96; he came to our Church in Southern Cal. Being very good friends with our Pastor. He ministered on Sunday and accompanied it by a workshop the next day. I've never in my long life experienced a man with level of talent. And genuine humility. It was truly a rare treat.
We’ve been lucky enough to see Doyle at our local Lutheran Church a couple of times. It was so nice to have about 10 friends and even my 80 year mom attend the show. It’s been a couple of years since CoVid so we’re waiting for another show.
I met Doyle back in '08 and spoke to him for a little while. I told him that I had never heard of him and I mentioned that Steve Howe was one of my favorite players. His response was that he thought that Steve was a wonderful guitarist and that he admired him a lot. Well, I still love Steve Howe, but Doyle is my favorite guitar player and I think that he always will be, he is the only guitarist to actually astonish me by his playing.
A true gift to the guitar world ... one of the very best in the world. Much of his amazing music is for the church no less ! Wonderful person and teacher who wants to share his music, wonderful lessons ... for free. Great website and sponsors too ! Go Jacksonville Florida ! !
Talk about being a kid in a candy shop up in that guitar attic, what fun that must be! Like Christmas all year long. Loved your reminiscing, brings back old memories for me also. Beautiful messages Doyle, thanks 🙏
Oh the joy of letting loose with that classic rock for your 12 String finale! I sure have fun watching you perform and hear your fantastic guitar music. The Sweetwater firm is a great place for music supplies and instruments. Glad they had you perform and do your clinic. Glad it is on RUclips, too.
This is to the guy at 51:25 on the video asking how to start playing fingerstyle. I had the same problem as you. I would pick up instruction books and videos trying to learn fingerstyle but I couldn't catch on. Then I realized that although I am an intermediate guitarist, I'm a beginner at fingerstyle. I picked up a DVD from Melbay called "Anyone can play Fingerstyle guitar" and in 3 weeks I had the hang of it. I bought Mark Hanson's "Beyond Basics Fingerstyle Guitar" and I was off and running. Fingerstyle opens up a whole new world of guitar playing. I hope this helps anyone trying to learn.
I had the honor of meeting Doyle in the mid 1990's at my church. I was kind of close to his guitars, (just looking with may hands stuck in my pockets) and he came up to me from behind and said" Do you play" and from there we talked about playing for about 10 minutes. I told him "yes I do play, but I have a fat hand with short fingers, so I'll never be very good", and he said, Well don't quit, just have fun. Doyle really is just like appears, a regular guy with an extraordinary skill and talent' ;-)
For anyone that's interested in fine playing guitars, I once owned a Taylor DDSM and I cannot recommend a guitar above this instrument, it is a strikingly great guitar. They are expensive, as all fine instruments are, but never once did I have the thought that I had paid to much for it. If you are a serious student you must have a playable guitar and the sound produced by this particular guitar is really something to hear. I was forced by circumstances to sell the guitar and as it happened Mr. Dykes played the guitar when it was brought up for resale. I felt like a proud father that was forced to give his daughter to a better man. I loved that guitar and if you decide to buy a DDSM, I promise you that you will never regret it for a moment.
I was waiting to hear your comparison between Merle and Chet. Hopefully, you can mention it on one of your Sunday String -a- Longs. Thanks. This was so inspiring. When I hear you play, it seems all is right with the world.
Doyle Dykes -Amazing skills , truly a gift from God and mostly thank you for sharing . Also by lighting another candle the original one does not diminish, it only helps to create more light , which is what you are doing -- Thank you for being that sailor for many like me.--So here I really am hoping one can never be too old to start.
Wow! I thought Doyle was a die-hard Taylor endorser! They made a DD Signature model for him. I guess nothing lasts forever. Did Guild offer him more $$$ to break away from Taylor (who he was with for years)? None-the-less... DD's playing is exquisite as always. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful playing. (Not really convinced he needs to (or should) sing though. His guitar playing is his voice. Just keep it to the guitar dude.
From my understanding. Doyle Dykes was having Grandchildren and wanted a little bit slower schedule as in 2004 I think he was on the road 310 days or something like that. He also said, despite what most people might assume that the Guitar companies and their employees are pretty good friends. So it’s not a dog eat dog mentality. If you know anything about Doyle you know he has honor.
it is often discussed who is the best acoustic guitarist in the world. and often the name Tommy Emmanuel is mentioned. I believe, however, that Doyle Dykes is in no way inferior to him. There were and there are many very good guitarists. Dykes is definitely one of the brightest stars in the guitar sky. It is always an experience listening to him.
@@soofitnsexy And I forgot all about this since I posted, apparently, six years ago :o It was another world then, and I lived half a globe away. Thanks Chris for taking me back, just by replying to this you made my day a thousand times better. I won't go into details but this little bit of peace and calm was exactly what I needed.
great playing. sounds like the 1st guild was set up with low action--lots of buzzing & such. which didn't help sell the guitar. this coming from a Guild fan.
It's interesting, he can play (!!!), he can sing, he can compose, is enough of a showman and enjoys playing in front of people - but he is not a music star in the eyes of the wider public (not like e.g. an Eric Clapton anyway). Is that due to having made different life choices, having other prioriies or what is the missing ingredient that makes some very good musicians stars and other outstanding musicians "just" fairly known to some. Or maybe it takes a little easier tunes that are easier to consume every day, hum along to.
Please Doyle, dont play any single note rifts or try to go at them at breakneck speed because you have not learned the technique yet and it sounds like hell and the 3 finger tremolo effect on all of the strings at once also sounds like hell, and stop trying to show off. Just play the guitar and stop talking.
Doyle’s playing and his Peaceful personality calm me down when I’ve had a stressful day. He Loves Jesus and you can tell it.
Watching Doyle is a humbling experience.
Never knew of him before in all my 69 years .Loved Chet Atkins, and the sound continues on . Thank God...............
i love his personality. he's so chill and humble. sometimes, he even seems surprised by the things he comes up with. TFS!
Doyle is an amazing player, carrying on the traditions of Chet and Merle. Love his style and his music.

Not to mention when Doyle goes internationally on missions trips he gives away guitars from what I've been told. To the less fortunate
When Eric Johnson gives you free reign of his personal studio, you are royalty.

That last medley on the 12 string of Classical Gas and 25 or 6 to 4 was amazing!

@48:36 "HUHHUH!" Those little micromoments are how you tell a musician is in tune with his instrument, his audience and his soul.
Thank you so much!
Doyle you are still my guitar hero! Trying to get used to you not playing Taylors :) Great sign by Fender/Guild that will pay great dividends.

Heck, I’m a huge music guy, and I only discovered this amazing guitarist and man three days ago. I’m almost 59.

Awesome guitar skills, id love to have a teacher like this .it looks like he is using a Klon OD for his acoustic guitar , interesting .
Transparent, wont add/take anything from the acoustic tone.
To give him your guitar ..well ? That is real soul and character.?
Does anyone know what song he was playing at 24:05? cause thats just so beautiful.
It's a version of Yellow by Coldplay.
Coldplay - Yellow
Coldplay Medley - Chameleon album
Sweet! Thanks, I greatly Appreciate it!
Reminds me of Doc Watson
Anyone know where the lick at 52:30 is from?
That comes from "Oh By Jingo" - Chet Atkins -Stringin' Along With Chet, one of his early albums.
Mike
Thanks, I will check that out
Does anyone know what song he was playing at 59.32?
Twin Six Shooters
Al Sten: Does anyone know what song he was playing at 59.32
TWIN SIX SHOOTERS

NHC JAIL
BATMAN!
His talk around the 15:00 mark didn’t age well. Amazing player. Probably my favorite.
Now he plays godin.....
He just signed back up with Guild again.
When you realize he's not always using a thumbpick

It's possible that he is satisfied where he is. Some of the best musicians that I have known have shunned the stardom rat race.
DOYLE DYKES 'IS' THE GUITAR... WITH NO EQUALS.. RICH SHEFF 80 yo BLUES PICKER
Just too much
don't like guild, to dark. i prefer taylor-ish sounds great player tho-- very clean, cleaner than tommy tho not as fast and versatile
