I've got a few things to clean for you, Idaho Is full of junk that needs a good restore, I just got done re-storing mid 19th century axe head, along with a early 20th centry pick axe head used by my great great grandfather to mine coal
I'm no expert but British Army Helmets were round not oval and they didn't have the liner attached by a ribbon going through holes in the helmet itself. I don't know what you got but I'm pretty sure it isn't military.
I never said it was an army issue helmet. This is a zuckerman helmet issued to civilians and civil workers. Not just issued to the fire guard like Lars (the expert) seems to think
Wow! The response to my last line came out as some real butthurt. I know its a Zuckerman and that it was not as you say "Not just issued to the fire guard". Pre-war and WW II helmets happens to be an interest of mine.
DiesInEveryFilm Customs .....Didn't want to piddle on your toes but if you say 'W2 helmet' and paint it army green..... well one assumes that you think it's ......well...Army.
There's a more simpler way to get rid of lots of rust very fast you can try to put the Rusty object in a container or bin if it's big and feel it up with white vinegar and 25% extremely hot water and it has to be completely submerged under that vinegar then you stirred and place the object inside and wait about a couple of hours to be safe about 12 hours if it's really rusty 24 hours then scrub it with some sandpaper while it's still wet and every single bit of that rust would come off you're welcome
Oh dear oh dear. Just because you know about using vinegar doesn't make it right. These helmets are thin steel and vinegar is an acid it's not easy to control like sandpaper and I did this in less than your 12hr vinegar sitting time. Here watch a video of me restoring this helmet via being in my house as vinegar scrubs away.
DiesInEveryFilm Customs Loved the video! Beautiful restoration! Out of curiosity, would electrolysis have worked to remove the rust from a helmet like this, or is there something about its construction that would make that a bad idea? (Still probably not as entertaining a video, though.)
Hello! Nice restoration! I believe it’s original colour would’ve been gray, but it still looks nice! Also, how did you get the lace undone? I’m planning on cleaning mine but it has quite a bit of rust and I don’t want to get anything on the liner
They were available in 3 colours grey, blue and green this was green thats why I painted it green. The lace was ruined on mine so i had to replace but it was a nightmare to get undone
The result was acceptable. But you must admit that you like to work more than you should. A correct way to remove the oxide is with phosphoric acid, which also protects the metal. What you said you didn't use vinegar because the metal was thin is a fallacy. If it were true, the helmet would have been smashed when you sanded it so hard. Good job.
The helmet is thin I only needed to take off the surface rust then treat the remainder. Acid will eat metal which I didn't want. I restored it how I saw fit
There's a antique store near me where I get most of my military surplus and they got one of these babies in stock. I was planning on buying it. It's slightly rusty and has a few paint chips but the condition is excellent. I'm a big collector plus I come from a military family. I used to wear this stuff when I went to school. I would sometimes even wear a gas mask and the other kids would freak out and get yelled at by the teachers but it was worth it. It was a lot of fun.
