- Today I took a look inside a Chinese "9W" spotlight LED lamp with a COB (chip on board) LED. This version has E27 base and runs on 220 / 230 / 240V AC mains.

People often could not afford a watch in those days so the clock gave the whole family the time.

On LED side 16.3Vdc at 253ma =4.12 watts. 5.2 watts on mains shows SMPS as 80% efficient (cold) maybe better when LED's are hot? Diodes exhibit lower Vf when hot so this could really be 7-8 watts since there's no optical feedback loop.

The power goes a little bit down as it heats up, because the current is constant and the voltage goes down with temperature. The efficiency probably really is just a bit above 80%... I'd expect at least 90%.

But I didn't see a secondary current limiting resistor., unless it's on the LED plate? LED's are directly connected to the transfo via diode and MLCC cap. Wait.. Info's say primary side resistor makes chip limit to ~5w OK!

That's a shame about the transformer, it was looking like an ok-ish flyback supply.
The heatsink looked nice untill that thin disk came out so easy, it should have been cast as a solid part for good heat transfer.
Your beautifull cat knew it was crap, sitting on the diagram was a hint :-D
The more switching transformers I open, the more I'm wary when using any switching power supply. In some spots, it's very often isolated just by the enamel. I subconsciously check if I'm not touching anything grounded before touching any device :D. Having no heatsink compound, the LED is very poorly cooled. If it was at least mounted using screws, it would make a better contact, but a heatsink compound is always a good idea.
Yes propper heatsinking is important, i have a habit of going too far and using a bigger one than needed, i dont trust the device specs for temprature, i want it so i dont burn my finger lol.
I built a basic linear psu back in 1987 for a frend, its still working, that was made over the top as well, reliable yes :-D
If you were wondering about that chip you could't find i found this ( Mobile version: LED isolation 5W driver IC chip HA3022 Hua Hong SOP-8 brand new original replacement BP9022A ) on a Chinese chip site..

What the heck is powering the controller chip with no auxillary circuit? Is it just running off the start-up circuit or is there some other way I haven't seen before?
Yes it does and it takes a supply off the drain terminal as well.

10:30 that's nice, nice indeed! In fact, BigClive tore down a USB power supply once and it was sticking mains out on to the USB, the reason why was because the transformer's primary and secondary was touching and the enamel had worn off.
So these things are 100% lethal and should be treated as live...
And love the clock!
Sadly, almost 50% of switching transformers are not far from this situation. The ends of the winding (the wires that go from the pins to the winding) are exposed to the other windings. Manufacturers just put isolation in between of the windings and they think this is enough. The ends of the winding should have sleeves on them.

I'm not afraid of it :). I just evaluate it from the point of oblivious users. Every time I touch any LED or USB charger, I make sure I don't touch anything grounded! :D I already do this subconsciously.

Thanks you for your video. Very important information about those cheap chinese made spot lights. I've bought 8 of 10w spots but it's too bright. So I'm searching for a way to mod those COB led drivers inside the spot to reduce the power to, let's say, 7w. The driver schematic seems to be quite similar to yours but with different IC and components.

This circuitry is built into the power strip. It's a wattmeter... or a power to voltage converter, so I can display the power using a voltmeter.

That transformer is bad news when that varnish on the wires melts. I like when cat is trying to eat the primary winding of the transformer. You got yourself an awesome clock maaan!!!

It basically a power to voltage converter, so power can be displayed on a voltmeter (multimeter).

So, similar switcher to the non isolated buck, more components though, so expect them on the next revision to be using the non isolated buck, live heatsink and all. I just regard all of those style lamps to be live on all exposed metal in any case, so turn the lights off before removal, as in many cases the section above the socket will disintegrate as the poor quality plastic they use has little UV resistance.
BigClive had a led ring with the same chip and he found some kind of image of it ...........thumbs up for the cat

Yes one thing to make sure try to open it but, once you go to a store you'll never know? you just can't open it in order to buy it, you really have to buy it before you can open it, also not all people knows electronics well it's a gamble for others anyway it's a good warning

Alright, here's some backstory on this light, as I know a little about it:
The power supply is made by ShenZhen Dark Energy Co., Ltd. I've seen them before in budget cheapo lights. The reason they are used in places like is is because the circuitry is very well designed and simple, making these little things cost around 10-30 cents each for small sizes like that. Suppliers like that due to the fact they are incredibly cost effective (as was quite obvious). However, it's not their fault they're built like shit. They design the circuits in these tiny PCBs because it's what the market demands, however they do make properly isolated, UL/ETL/TUV etc listed models that are much larger in size, and won't fit in a unit like this. However, they do make buck regulators (I have one of them) that is made much nicer than this with proper output filtering and it's much nicer. Even though it is not isolated from mains, the way to achieve that is to make the LEDs incapable of being touched by people, and then hiding the tracks for the led connections under the LEDs so the 3kV finger test finds no continuity, making these bulbs pass the certification. I do like Dark's buck regulators, as they use caps (such as Aishi) which aren't good but nor are they bad, and they are usually very efficient in circuit design. Honestly if the market wasn't filled with a demand for cheap ass bulbs like this, we wouldn't have this problem.

It may be rated in Chinese kilovolts. I wouldn't trust it at 3kV :).

Good video, and how I love yourrrr hoobly doobly rolling of R's accent. Please don't be offended its meant with the deepest respect. I wish I could speak a Scandinavian language as well as you speak English! I really do! But why do the Chinese lamps over quote power? I bought some corn lamps on amazon rated at 15w yet when measured it showed just 9w with a current draw of 100ma at a voltage of 240v (UK) PF was all over the place obviously! Another set was bought from Greensun and showed a power of 20w PF 0.95 so great, well not so actually it runs very hot and the output falls to just 9w after 15 mins. When I reviewed it Poorly I received an email telling me if I withdraw the reviews I could have the lamps free of charge! I left the reviews up.
The listings multiply the power by at least 2 to sell more. Other sellers also start to do this just to keep up with the competition. Note that all of the Ebay lamps have no power marking. This allows the sellers to claim whatever power they want :).
I have seen Ramco lamps sold by ebay which are quite good cheap lamps btw with isolating PSU's sold as 35w lamps. In reality they are just 6w lamps. I suppose they are the equivalent of 35w halogen lamps?
The other horrible thing is the tape wrapping of the circuit board. The pins can easily penetrate it and make contact with the casing. I don't understand anyone who buys safety critical staff bypassing any regulations. You can easily set your house on fire and no insurance will pay if they find out...

To bad they dont make things such as your clock anymore. The chime is excelent. And your cat knows more about switching transformers than the manufacture of the so-called led bulb. Im guessing the cap on the primery side is used as a slow blow fuse.
They actually still DO make mechanical chiming clocks, but not many people buy those nowadays and it's also usually cheaper to buy an antique one than the new made one.
Try it with 5v DC or phone charger..
