So many women are ashamed to admit to feeling down because having a baby is supposed to be such a happy time in your life (and for the most part it is)…but it’s also a MAJOR life change and hormones are not a joke! Depression after baby doesn’t mean it wasn’t amazing, and doesn’t mean you’re a bad mama ❤

With myself having depression and anxiety, having my masters in counseling and understanding that it’s a true chemical imbalance I can relate so well. My husband being faith driven and never understanding depression after 30 years has started getting symptoms of anxiety and it completely shocked him to finally understand the huge pressure on your chest difficulty breathing, always having to get up and move, run around to “escape “. I said welcome to my world and it just hit him like a ton of bricks and thought it would never be him. I also watched my husband bury his grandparents and not shed a tear because it was ingrained in him to be the strong one, be supportive for others and not show weakness. I had a long talk early on how wrong it was to keep it bottled up.

@Sunflower 🌻 oh man. So I had just moved back to my parent's house after living away for a year with a boyfriend. I wanted to just come and be safe and refocus my life to God and myself, no men. About 3 weeks later, I was out doing laundry in the garage when I saw him for the first time. Apparently my brother had befriended him a few months previous, and he was visiting after returning home from a work trip (he was working for a cross-country mover between jobs as a soux chef). Tall, dark and handsome...wearing a black leather driver's cap backwards, tattoo on his arm, earrings in both ears (it was 2001) having a smoke at the end of the driveway talking with my brothers. When I asked my mom who he was, and she told me his name, that he was a friend of my brother's, and ended her sentence with "he's a sweetie". 😲 Had I brought him home a year before she would've taken one look at him and hard noped the whole thing.
Fast forward a day or two and I come home from work to him in the living room having a deep biblical conversation with my dad (he's a minister). 😲 Dad formally introduced us. He stood up to his full 6'7 height, shook my hand, his Pacific Ocean on a stormy day eyes half smiling, and I was sunk. There were curse words in my head, and a full on argument with my gut. I'm a 5'11 stubborn ginger, I was not having no man do that, no matter if I could wear heels and still be shorter than him. Nope. I was welcoming and cordial, cause my daddy taught me manners, and I went straight to my room and listened to them talk, because my manners only go so far sometimes.
Over the next couple days my brothers and their friends got me going out with them, and I warmed up to a bit of a friendship with him. We talked about work, but primarily about Scripture. But I struggled with the whole falling for this guy when I didn't want to fall for anyone. So, I up and visited my godparents for a weekend to get away and clear my head. Which helped. Until my godbrother overheard my dad and his dad talking on the speakerphone, as they did, about this guy Dad was ministering to. I walk into the kitchen where my godbrother was playing on his Gameboy (he was 22 at the time, but it was lasagna night and he wasn't missing that!), he glances up at me and says "so when you and that guy your dad was talking about get married, you'll have like 7' tall kids". 😲 I didn't say a word about him to anyone, and here's my godbrother walking me down the aisle.
Monday I'm at work and I hear That Guy's car pull into the lot ('88 Formula Firebird with a rumble you could feel in your toes from a block away). I went out to greet him and he asked if he could talk. So, I took a lunch and went and sat in the car and listened. He was having a difficult morning dealing with life stuff. Stuff I had no idea why he was telling me about, but I was glad to be a safe place for him. After a bit, he reached over and held my hand, thanking me. He says "you know that saying when you take away someone's joy, you take their life? I've felt dead since Thursday." 😲 All my dams broke all at once and it felt like God smacked me upside the head with a bag of bricks saying "you dummy, this guy is THE GUY and I've been trying to tell you but your stubborn ass just keeps running. STOP IT."
That Guy continues "so, I want to ask you something...are you thinking what I'm thinking? I know it's crazy, but I can't help but think it's from God." I laughed, told him that I had no other answer than yes, because I felt the same.
We were married that Friday night by my goddad in my parent's living room, inviting only our families. It's been a wild ride, but I would not change it for anything. ❤️

Love their Podcasts! Have enjoyed following them the past few years (via Facebook) but had never listened to Podcasts before. I enjoy this sweet young couple so much that I gave Podcasts a try. Now I’m binge listening from episode one as I go about my daily household stuff the past few days! Each episode has been interesting - and often refreshing - for this 55 yr old woman! It’s wonderful to hear you stand for your values and set good role models for young couples.

i love that you guys are talking about post-partum! i had it BAD when i was a first-time mom. it scared my husband because it was that bad and it's not talked about enough. i wish people would talk about it more. it's not all sunshine and rainbows and most people expect it to be.

When you guys talked about guys and emotions and mental health was soooooo good! For Christians, If you read the bible, especially the psalms, David was really emotional and in touch with his feelings. I get so much inspiration when writing worship songs and talking to God from the Psalms.

People with depression and anxiety are often super happy and outgoing because they know what it feels like to feel isolated. And then when they get home, they feel so mentally and emotionally exhausted because they gave all of the energy they had to keep the people around them happy. The only time I can override the anxiety is if I have to go into mom mode. If I need to protect anybody or if something serious is going on, you will never know that I'm anxious about it. And then I'll break down and lose it once everything has calmed down. I never knew until college that I had anxiety. I thought everybody felt like that.

Hi Abby. During my postpartum, especially in the first two months - i also felt triggered by the sun setting. I spoke to my counselor & this often happens postpartum bc it usually is the start of the “long night” with a crying baby & sleepless nights. Thanks for making it known that you also experienced this.

I'm an EMT and in school for firefighting right now and my husband does it as well. seeing hunter so unfazed and talking about the getting into the mentality of not letting anything bother you is so real and can be so difficult. also the talk about seeking help for bad calls, you have so many people around you not feeling any type of way about what you have witnessed and you go home and feel so low cause you have emotions. so many people forget we have emotions too and its sometimes not easy. the job is so rewarding yet so scary at the same time sometimes. when my husband and I first started dating I wasn't an EMT and didn't know anything and he would be gone for so long and I would be alone a lot so I understand Devin and being left alone for long hours and days even. Im nervous for when we have kids and both of us being gone for long hours and the other alone. I definitely takes a toll and its nice hearing other people in our situation!

Thank you for what you guys do.I am a hospice nurse and it can take a toll even when the deaths are expected, but you guys have to see the worst of the worst. My boss told me, "They ( the patients) will go through it with or without us." Someone has to do the very tough stuff. To get to help and comfort people is huge. Situations can't always be changed or "fixed", but to get to help where one can. Those on the front lines choose to be trained to take on the sad, dangerous, and stressful situations, so others don't have to do it, carry as much of the burden of it, and to protect us all.

Cried the whole time talking about postpartum cause it’s so relatable especially the anxiety but getting help/getting medication gives me such anxiety as well so I haven’t been able to get the help I truly need… also my husband is police and military and he’s so much like hunter the dry personality and so “not affected” he seems or is to his line of work as a fireman and my husband a police officer.. man what I would do for some genuine friends.! Enjoyed this so much ❤

Aww. Just read your comment. Go and get the help.
I was driving myself crazy with anxiety and it started making me develop OCD (checking my doors were locked) ect. When I got help, all of that disappeared. You will feel better. Sometimes just talking to someone helps. 😊
I left it untreated and more problems occurred. Im fine now after two years
Make sure you’re listening to your self and get help if you need it. It doesn’t make you “crazy” or “mad”

I can relate so much to Devon’s PP story! I got pregnant right before the pandemic and my daughter was born in May 2020. Between the restrictions and the fact that we live far from family, I felt so isolated and it really affected my mindset. I did not fill out that questionnaire honestly, afraid of the stigma. It’s so nice to hear someone else talk about a similar experience ❤

I'm nearly 61 years old. My (now) ex husband and I didn't wait and that fact always bothered both of us. We wished we had.... we didn't enter into that quickly, in fact it was closer to the wedding than not, but it happened. I believe that couples that do wait might just have the advantage because there just isn't anything to regret. We were married for 32 years. And they were really good years until they weren't anymore. The divorce was very traumatic, especially for me. We are ok now. We've got 3 adult children and 6 grandchildren and we are bound to see each other ( and his new wife who is wonderful) now and then. I loved the natural banter between the 2 couples during the podcast! It's clear to see that the 4 of you are truly good friends! Thanks for sharing so much if your lives with millions of strangers!!!

As an ER nurse in Memphis with a Memphis Fire brother, the reactions y'all were giving Hunter when he talked about stuff made me giggle so hard. As someone with anxiety/depression, I was the person who just learned to not let it weigh me down. Some situations hit you harder than others obviously but you def learn to just not think about it. Thankfully you have people who work with you, that helps too to process emotions.
