I still would not discount the alternator advice as it sounds like a bad alternator. Did the tech that the car was taken to run a full set of tests on it or did they just hook up a multi meter and see what its volt output was? Odds are you are dealing with an intermittent alternator issue and the tech could not find it with the quick tests they performed. It might be with the wiring to the alternator or perhaps the computer is having issues (some cars have alternators with a trigger wire which the car's computer sends a signal through the wire to start charging because the car is running). A tech would need to spend a lot of time testing these all to find an intermittent issue. Perhaps even removing the alternator to do a bench test on it.
Once the car starts and is running, the battery by and large is taken out of the mix on cars like yours (simple cars without a lot of electronic stuff and a bunch of on board computers) so you can disconnect the negative battery wire and the car will run fine. So the battery is probably not the issue.
Lets also look at when the issue occured. It looks like you were driving in the rain when this occured. Therefor it might be water that is getting on something and causing issues.
One place to look at is that big red or black wire that is attached to the alternator with a large nut. that can get corroded and cause issues. It is protected by a plastic cap but corrosion still gets in
Finally don't discount the thought the techs might not really know what they are doing. I have in the automotive industry for years and you would be surprised at the amount of techs that are just "parts throwers" and cannot really diagnose things.
    Good luck
