Samnite spears are still useful mercenaries for the Romans. Don't get enough Triarii. Hell, even when the Roman factions finally venture outside the Italian peninsula, mercenary spear units are still needed to round out the roster. Even those warband spear units I found use. Either to take cavalry charges to the face or operate the riskier stuff like siege towers and battering rams, absorb missile fire. I'll save my more precious heavy infantry for when it matters. Entire stacks composed solely of Roman heavy infantry are expensive.
We need a part two featuring: Bastarnae vs Bastarnae Mercs, Scythian horse archer vs Scythian horse archer mercs, Sarmatian cavalry vs Sarmatian mercs, Eastern infantry, Numidian cavalry vs Numidian mercs and the elephants
I noticed that every time it was the rebel side that lost, and whenever I play I find the rebel units die faster. Is there anything in the game files that messes with rebel faction troops? I’m astonished mercenary hoplites lost, I figured the points where they’re winded vs tired for 10 seconds would have made them win. 3/2 regular hoplites, who needs stamina anyway
@@qualityoldgames7721 Perhaps try a version where it's regular troops vs. regular troops, with one side being rebel and the other a normal faction, see if this holds water?
In game the rebels are described as escaped slaves. Perhaps a life of hardship along with being physically malnourished and likely very easily demoralized as a result would be the in game explanation for that. The hoplites, who would win, soldiers drafted to fight for their nation or sell swords? Well that all depends on the training and troop quality but one would be biased for the people fighting for a legitimate nation/city state
I thank you man, for doing my request about mercenaries vs original counterpart👍 I guess these mercenaries scum using their wages for drink&women instead of upgrading their equipment😂😂

@@A.Guy10000 Stamina is the only trait the mercenaries have over the regular hoplites. But that's more important in an actual, longer battle, not in such a short test. The regulars also didn't really win, five battles is way too little data to come to that conclusion. If you'd fight this a hundred times it should be almost equal, perhaps even with a slight advantage to the mercenaries because of their stamina trait. It's important to remember that there's still a lot of randomness and luck involved when opposing units are too similar.
triarii vs samnite is quite one-sided from the get go
Agreed :) Thanks for the comment.

Very useful for Roman Factions since no good spears.
Yeah i often hire those spear warband for pushing the battering rams, or catching enemy javelins with their heads😂
Agreed, and available early, since one does not get too many Triarii :) Thanks for the comment.
@@Gitsmasher :D A good way to use them. Thanks for the comment.
playing as a non phalanx using faction merc hoplites can be a real ásset

1. Yo where's the "3 out of 5 for the hoplites" summary?
2. Damn, the Samnites lose to the Axulia. Weak.
No wonder why the Samnites got demolished by the Romans IRL!
Thanks for the comment. Well, have had some wrongly put results in WH3 vids but I guess the end result in Rome is clear enough :)
A quite expensive rooster. Only in desperate situations do I hire them.
Thanks for the comment. Agreed on the price. What I like about them is that they can keep an attack going :)

Is the merc hoplites "good stamina" an Anabasis reference? 🤔😅

I thought hoplites fought with spears.
I think they did, except in close quarters :) Thanks for the comment.

Why are the stats meaningless in this game?
Sorry, could you be a bit more specific, please? I don't get what you mean.
Huh? Are you referring to the Hoplites match? :) Thanks for the comment.
Yeah, the hoplites match. They have the same stats except the mercenaries have good sgamina, why would they lose?
