Have to confess, the bit about the Doctor giving Sylvia and Wilf the lottery ticket, was that he had also managed to make it so much more impactful by borrowing the money from their late husband and son-in-law and, of course, means he was still able to give his daughter something on her wedding day.
That's why that era was so good cos they gave everyone so much weight to their characters that we actually cared. Now I don't even care about the doctor.
Adric should've been number one. That final credits scene in silence with only his broken badge of mathematical excellence on the screen trumps any other companion finale.
Rose, Donna and Amy's departures really brought me to tears. 😥 And I know it didn't happen in the main show but a spin off and also happened in real life but the news of Elizabeth Sladen's passing (departure), may she rest in peace; was truly heartbreaking. I'm truly thankful that she came back as Sarah Jane for NuWho so much so she got a spin off show that was equally awesome as Torchwood was.
One that I feel should be on this list is Sarah Jane's departure. Not just that she got dropped off in the wrong place, but that The Doctor never came back for her and in School Reunion we got to see just how much that hurt her.
Good point, but Sarah Jane Smith did return. 1st she was in the failed spin-off pilot "K-9 and Company" in 1981, and then she was in "The 5 Doctors" episode during Peter Davidson's run in 1982. Sarah Jane was paired with Jon Pertwee because Tom Baker refused to participate in the special episode. I also think she was offered to return as a companion to Peter Davidson's Doctor Who but declined. Unfortunately, the David Tennant Series 2 Episode 3 "School Reunion" in 2006 was incorrect because it doesn't take into account her appearance in "The 5 Doctors" episode. It's unclear if the "School Reunion" episode was another attempt at giving Sarah Jane Smith another spin-off series or if her character's return was so popular, that they gave her a spin-off "The Sarah Jane Adventures". I think the former because at the end of the "School Reunion" episode K-9 was left for her fully refurbished. So essentially "The Sarah Jane Adventures WAS the second attempt at "K-9 and Company", IMO. It came full circle.
@@StephenLeGresley Absolutely agree. It was definitely sad again when Tennant's Dr. Who left her with K-9 at the end of "School Reunion", even though she got her own TV series. It's not the same as traveling as a companion with the Doctor. She was one of the longest companions in Dr. Who History. Sarah Jane Smith will always be my favorite Dr. Who Companion. If she was offered to come back as peter Davidson's Dr. Who Companion, it's a shame, that she didn't accept the opportunity. Thanks for your comment. Have a nice weekend.
Maybe it has something to do with what the Doctor alluded to in The End Of Time; "It’s all part of the convergence. Maybe… maybe touching Donna’s subconscience. Oh she’s still fighting for it even now. The Doctor-Donna." Maybe that convergence is still echoing all the way back from 2009 and that causes her memory to return without causing her head to burn.
Another one for the sad list. That scene when the third Dr. left Jo Grant behind since she had just gotten engaged, that was kind of sad. He drove away silently into the night. Jo Grant and the third Dr. worked well together.
Love to see some appreciation for Tegan's exit, it is heartbreaking and probably the most realistic exit of any companion - she just had enough of all the death and destruction. The adventures had stopped being fun. And Janet Fielding's acting... oof, my heart... I'm really excited to see both Tegan and Ace return later this year, they are two of my favourite companions! (alongside Sarah Jane, Donna and Bill) Ace in particular will be interesting too as she never got an on screen exit so I'm intrigued to see how it will be explained, it is commonly accepted that Ace started A Charitable Earth after she left the Doctor but what are her specific reasons for leaving the Doctor? It is very possibly we will finally find out this year! And I wonder if it will play a role in Dan and Yaz's exits too - I could see it but only time will tell, either way I can't wait!
Donna Noble was my choice: she had grown so much as a person and it was nice having a companion just be his friend & her losing all Memories to save her
I’m bursting into tears in the first cyber man episode because it’s the beginning of the end of Rose’s time. Donna is devastating too but all the hope and sadness of Rose’s departure are deadly. And the end of Bad Wolf.
Not sure Bad Wolf ever got an ending - in Day of The Doctor, the Moment (a sentient weapon of mass destruction) chooses Rose's form, and tells him that in that form, she's called Bad Wolf. I don't think it's a coincidence, among all the forms of past or future companions that the Moment could have taken, that it picks the one that has been part of the time vortex. Rose as Bad Wolf probably exists eternally as an impression in time.
I thought Tegan would be hard to match. Then I thought Rose would be impossible to top... then Bill. Bloody Bill. That whole... "pain...pain...pain..." just horrific.
Ellie, I'm surprised at you. Sure you didn't write this but as you are such a massive fan of hers, I'd of thought you'd have pushed for River to be included. Yes her death is the first time we see her, but if you watch her whole story/Husbands of river song and then go back to the library episodes, her death is heartbreaking
One of my biggest issues with Dr Who is when they undo things. Dr who should have stakes, it should have consequences. Bill being a cyberman could have been an iconic end but they spent the following episodes just showing the actor and then had her become whatever she did
The First Doctor’s companion Sara Kingdom in “The Daleks’ Master Plan” died tragically when the Daleks’ Time Destructor aged her until she was just a skeleton. Granted, no episodes of her exist, but there must be stills or telesnaps that could have been used.
Personally I would have included Nyssa ahead of Tegan, though perhaps that is because I felt a greater connection to Nyssa out of the two. And maybe Amy and Rory as my No.1. The characters had no intention of leaving the Doctor (and River), in Rory's case he never got to say goodbye and Amy to all intents and purposes took her own life. She didn't know that the angel would send her back to the same point rather than just kill her, and her grief at the prospect of living without Rory meant she didn't care which one happened so long as she would not live on without him.
I must agree, kinda though. While I must admit Flux was quite a good series; Jodie's era has been somewhat hit and miss. I honestly wish Chibnall brought his writing style from the Torchwood episodes he wrote even his episodes before his era have been serviceable but his writing fell flat most of the time. But at least we're getting RTD back now and hopefully things will get back on track.
Susan and the First Doctor (played by a different actor since Hartnell had died) ARE reunited in the Peter Davison's 'The Five Doctors'. They even play that speech that he will one day return at the beginning of the episode. And not sure who rated these but Potts, Tegan, Adric, Terlo and Noble were not likable characters (complete conflict does not make for a good series...there's banter and then there's just being an a..). Peri, Clara, K-9, Amy, Susan, Rose, Sara and both Romana's were great companions.
1-As sad as Rose's departure was, it came at a welcome time. She had really become unbearable during Series Two. 2-Susan didn't leave of her own choice, she had her choice taken away from her when her grandfather literally locked her out of the TARDIS. 3-Where in the WORLD did you get the idea that Ace was LGBTQ+??? 4-Where in the world is Jo Grant? She should've been in the top 3 at least.
Unbearable? She was iconic. Also Ace is bisexual, that’s how she played it and was supposed to even share a scene with a woman with romantic subtext but classic who writers didn’t want to make her a lesbian due to attitudes at the time. So any interest in women was just slightly hinted at
While I agree with every entry on this list, the lack of Peri's presence on it makes me think the whole list invalid. While I can't disagree that Donna's ending is the most heartbreaking thing, Peri's ending always hurts me more upon every rewatch. I mean, her whole essence was erased and an alien being took over her body, and the Doctor only found out about it after the Time Lords let it happen. And Colin Baker's reaction? Gives me goosebumps every time.
Absolutely. How Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen) and Jo Grant (Katy Manning) didn't make this list is mind-boggling. Both should have been 1 and 2. I think this video concentrated on the new Dr. Who companions, especially for the top 5.
Bill Potts and Susan are really good companions, it’s sad they left. Bill could’ve had more Seasons if she didn’t get, killed! She shouldn’t of gotten killed she didn’t get lots of time. And Susan didn’t ever get that long ever, it was sad she left too. I can’t really say anything about Susan because she just left and decided to go with (Steven) I think it was. 🧐
I understand how most people think Hell Bent undoes everything about Clara's death and sacrifice in Face the Raven, but that moment in the diner when the Doctor says if he saw Clara again he would recognoze her immediately and she turns away holding back tears knowing he has truly forgotten about her still gets to me. It's truly sad when your dearest friend has no memory of you whatsoever. It's strange though that he would remember her name still or that she even existed. That's kind of selective amnesia there.
Before watching: Bill Potts must be top followed by the Ponds. During watching: Aaah I forgot about ClassicWho After watching: fair enough, but I still say Bill. She got shot in the first few minutes of the episode and dragged it out with a “will she survive? Come on Doctor, save her!” vibe over the first episode, and then everyone recoiling in fear when she’s a cyber, and then the big battle at the end where nobody really survives… it still hurts. I’m glad some form of her is still alive because I’d really like to see more of her. We had too little time with her.
In 50 years of viewing DR Who I have only had tears twice and neither made this list 2. River Song @ the Singing Towers 1. Sarah Jane being dropped off @ Aberdeen
My husband wants that as a story arc in the audios, where The Master explains that The Doctor didn't save him. (Not telling him that the cyberman had damaged the console)
Jo Grant should have been in the top 10. Jo leaves the doctor, because she is moving onto the next part of her life, but she has left him affectively completely alone. The way that he leaves the happy engagement party and drives off on his own is very well done, conveys the doctors absolute sense of loss, and shows an uncertainty about what’s coming in his future. Jo’s departure also signals the beginning of the disbanding of the UNIT Family.
I think donna was the saddest as i know rose got trapped and did get her own doctor and Martha did get used as a rebound but all of them kept there memories but donna practically died when she became normal again she thought she was nobody but she saves the universe and she would never know till the 60th of corse

It never clicked for me and tbh most of the time the companions do feel bad mooded and forced to be there. In every story there is a line of one or two of them complaining about the adventure and i watch it like "WTF?? Again??? If its always bad just walk away and make space for companions who want to be there"
Ugh, terrible writing here. Many places, many times. I get that this was written by a fan, but it would help if that fan has actually seen or thought much at all about the stuff being discussed. Ace was LGBTQ? Really? Bill and 12 were as popular as Donna and 10? Really? The companions see the universe through our eyes? Huh! Interesting!

Sarah Jane Smith. Twice!

I wonder if the lottery winning will be touched upon in the specials currently filming?
I for one love hell bent. The whole point is that the doctor is going too far after being pushed to his limits. It’s 12s take on time lord victorious.
Didn't you do this one already? I could swear that I've seen this video before.

I'd love Adric to return older, bitter, and villainous after being rescued by The Master. Why? Just because The Master is a dick.
My husband wants that as a story arc in the audios, where The Master explains that The Doctor didn't save him. (Not telling him that the cyberman had damaged the console)

2 and 1 should be turned in my opinion.
Way to down play Clara’s true exit.
Errr no, Susan did not leave on her own terms. The Doctor went "Oh you're DTF with that David guy? lolbye". She begged him to let her stay.
Well she wanted to stay, but thought the Doctor needed her. It's a kind of a tough love situation

What, no Victoria? Well, it's only 10. But still!
Sarah Jane and Jo Grant should both be here. Victoria is sadder than Jamie and Zoe too.
I think Tegan's exit is the best in the entire show.
Will have to rewatch Earthshock tomorrow. I don't remember Adric's death being all that sad.
