    Thank you so much for this video. I just wish I'd seen it months ago. I can't count the amount of times I've tried to square my fabric up just watching it get smaller and smaller each time I trim bits off. I'm going to put this into practice right now. Thanks again. I've just subscribed so I'm looking forward to getting some more ideas like this in the future. Elaine x

    I do a similar thing with 3 yds of fabric when dressmaking. I stand on the landing and hang the whole 3 yds down over my stairwell, selvedge to selvedge and adjust up and down until I see the edges aligned at the bottom. Works every time.

    Hi Kim, great info, thank you! I have a question about yardage. When you first start out, matching your selvages, what do you do if you have a 108" wide piece that is maybe 6 or 7 yards long (think quilt backing)? Or even just a piece that's 2-3 yards? I find laying them down on the floor (right after a good vacuuming) is helpful, but it's still pretty tedious getting it all matched up. Pre-washing seems to exacerbate the issue...

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  7 лет назад +2

      That's a good question, Karin! First, I haven't actually had that much fabric all in one piece, so this is just a suggestions, but it should work. Yes, probably the only place big enough to lay out this amount of fabric would be the floor. I would suggest only working with about a yard width of fabric along the selvages - about as much as you can hold with your two hands, as I do in the video. It can help to support the remaining amount of fabric, maybe on a chair, just so it doesn't drag down the fabric you're working with. I would get this smaller amount straightened up and then lay it down on the floor and pin the fabric along the selvage to hold it. You can then lay it down and move to the next part, working your way along a little bit at a time. Hopefully this will work for you. Let me know how it goes.

    I knew there was a way to straighten fabric by shuffling along the selvedge ends, but almost all videos here wanted to rip the fabric and/or pluck out a thread from the grain. I’ve always hated the idea of ripping the fabric because I’m afraid of it tearing through the side threads unnecessarily, and I can never pull out more than an inch or two of thread on tightly woven fabric! Thank you for this tutorial. Does this work if the selvedge edges are also crooked, anyone know?

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  3 года назад +1

      The selvages will be straight-ish. I usually match them up as best I can - in some places they will match perfectly and in others, they might be a bit off.

    Can you show how to square the 108” backing.

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  3 года назад

      You would use the same technique, but would need to fold the fabric over a few times before cutting it. Make sure to support the bulk of the fabric by using another table or a chair so it doesn't shift when cutting.

  • @rosaredondo1598
    @rosaredondo1598 3 года назад

    What happens when you have to fold over your fabric because it’s 100” long? Beginner here😊 and do you then cut th salvage edges?

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  3 года назад +1

      If you have regular cotton fabric that is 42" wide and several yards/metres long, then you match up the selvage edges so that the fabric hangs straight down into the fold and then continue to do this for the length of the fabric - this applies no matter the length of your fabric. I sometimes use a chair or table to hold up the length I'm not working on if I am dealing with a lot of fabric so it doesn't pool on the floor and so the weight of the fabric doesn't pull/distort the area I'm working on on the table.

  • @pollycracker3191
    @pollycracker3191 4 года назад

    So what do you do if you don't have any selvage edges?

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  4 года назад

      You'll need to have a straight edge on either side and then use the same method. Be sure that your edges are cut on grain so that everything will be nice and square when you trim it up.

    I have a round table cloth, I want to make it square. Can you show me how to cut it into a square please?

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  3 года назад

      I would suggest that you decide what size you want to make it, find the centre and measure out half that distance on all sides and draw a cutting line with an erasable pen or pencil.

  • @kathytincler2446
    @kathytincler2446 3 года назад

    Ok this was good....starting to see things (I know nothing, brand new) but then what do you do with the wonky selvage edge along the horizontal sides? Thank you

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  3 года назад +1

      You will be cutting off the selvages before further cutting the fabric. You always remove the selvage edges for quilting.

    I have a horrible time. It's the fold that ends up fatter than I need. I just used 5 inches trying to cut a straight line to cut quilt block

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  3 года назад

      You could also do this with the fabric only folded once - so, 2 layers

  • @winnepeterson7740
    @winnepeterson7740 2 года назад

    That does nothing for straightening the grain which needs to be done before straightening the edges!

    • @Chatterboxquilts
      @Chatterboxquilts  2 года назад

      It's true that this doesn't straighten the grain of the fabric as you need to do for garment sewing but I've never had any issues with that for quilting.
