What a great pair of rousing tunes! All of the solos were outstanding and I loved that Greg got right up on the mike. I feel that sometimes he pulls away on the last word or two of lines and I have some difficulty understanding his words. He didn't do that too much on "All By Myself" and I loved listening to him. He has a great way of interpreting songs.

For anyone who hasn't had enough of my tedious and pedantic attempts to provide a commentary: 'Hot Town' - depicting a train journey to 'Hot Town' and reaching the destination at the end of the piece - was composed in 1929 by clarinet-playing bandleader Fess Williams and recorded in New York that year by Fess Williams and His Royal Flush Orchestra. Tuba Skinny copy the Introduction of the original and then sensibly omit the vocal patter while making the 'railway' noises before Shaye (from 00:48 to 01:20) is the first to play the 32-bar theme. Fess Williams' original version is full of ideas but I think Tuba Skinny's quicker tempo and plentiful clever tricks make their version even more enjoyable than his. After Shaye states the Theme, it is played five more times:
01:21 : Ensemble; but with Barnabus leading in the final 16 bars
01:53 : Craig improvises over the 32 bars, but with Shaye and Barnabus backing him in the Middle Eight
02:25 : Ensemble, but with Max leading in the final 16 bars
02:57 : Robin takes the 32 bars, against stop chords (but note the clever triple stop chords in the Middle Eight)
03:29 : Ensemble with trombone 'echoing' effect - closely copied from the Fess Williams original; Shaye takes the Middle Eight as a solo. Note the clever ending, with rallentando and extra two bars, to bring the train journey to an end. Played entirely in the key of B flat.
'All By Myself' is a 12-bar played in C.

Absolutely Fantastic!!! Great video and audio. The Fess Williams tune "Hot Town" is one of these livley furious tunes that only Tuba Skinny can play it so brilliant. What a great number!!!! and great the wahsboard solo by Robin. The crowd enjoyed it so much.

You are only about 300 miles from New Orleans. Heck, I drive almost that 5 or 6 times a year to see them in New Orleans. Check their schedule when they get back from touring this fall and make a weekend of it in New Orleans. You won't regret it.

Thanks. That audio actually came from my cell phone camera, one I got earlier this year. It really does have excellent mics. I also recorded this with my separate Tascam PCM recorder but the camera audio sounded better.

It seems like Max is playing banjo more often now that Jason has left the band.
Yes he is but he is playing a 4 string banjo, a more traditional jazz instrument than the 6 string banjo Jason played.
He also plays it like it was played a hundred years ago. So many banjoists do modern takes on these old songs and they just don’t fit right. Great music and great playing - great arraignments too.
