Usually when comedians came on they did a 2-3 minute set. If Johnny called them over to sit down after the set, that meant they got Johnny’s seal of approval. The goal of every comedian was to get to sit down because more often than not that meant their career was going to take off. Seasoned veterans knew they were going to sit down and Johnny would have lead-in questions ready so the comedian could answer with more bits from their material. That is what you’re seeing in this clip.
@Sophia Waitword
Hi Sophia, thank you for the information, I guess we were a little confused on the setup of the show, but now you have set the scene for us it makes more sense.
Nice of you to take the time to explain it for us.
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact he got better with it over the years, but a lot of it was from a defense mechanism. He had crippling stage fright and he had to keep the jokes flying! It is like the high wire act: Don’t look down.
Rodney was such a sweet man. And broken deep in his soul from a lifetime of abuse (when he said he “got no respect, he meant it.) People should know about him and his story because it is the story of redemption from great suffering. You guys should check out some of his straight interviews. He is very intelligent and disarming, a very introspective person. (Incidentally, he was an avid pot smoker his whole adult life.)
Exactly that’s how Seinfeld got his break
This video for some reason started after he did some jokes
You guys wanted to know more about him as a person. However, that is not why he was there. Even though this is a talk show, everyone in the audience knew he was. The King of the one liners, and he was there to make people laugh. He was one of the best. RIP Rodney Dangerfield.
@Robert Szekely
Cheers Robert, yes that makes sense, we were just thinking out loud.
All the best
He was on the Johnny Carson show somewhere around 30 times. We all knew who he was.
@@georgehampton25 I never said that you didn't know who he was.
@@robertszekely8686 You took what I said wrong. I guess I could have worded it better. Was agreeing with you. :)
@@georgehampton25 My apologies. Thank you.👍
I understand your wanting to get to know Rodney. The audience knew him. He appeared on the Tonight Show over 70 times (1969-2002).
Johnny Carson was and still stands as the absolutely best at letting his guests shine. He had a gift/knack for setting celebrities and regular folk up to look and perform at their best. Most hosts especially today bring a lot of attention back to themselves. Miss Johnny and being able to watch him late weeknights.
i think craig ferguson and graham norton are the closest thing will see maybe conan too.
Rodney is a comedy legend in the US. 😄
Canada too bro! I say this knowing full well what Rodney had to say about my Country "Canada; they started a country and no one showed up. LMAO
Part of the talk show genius of Johnny Carson is that he would adjust his level of intervention depending upon the quality of the guest. If a guest was terse, he'd ask a lot of leading questions, make jokes, etc. With someone as loquacious as Rodney, he'd just sit back & let him rip. He checked his ego on the stage. Brilliant.
Brilliance. No stupid party games with guests. And more than one guest on the couch!!!!!❤
the whole point of The Johnny Carson Show was to see who could make Johnny laugh the hardest! That's the main reason imo that Ed McMahon was Johnny's perpetual sidekick.... and it would be a fairly safe bet to say that Rodney made Johnny laugh the hardest ;)
Johnny Carson did that type of interaction with very few comedians. He played it more like Rodney's straightman. Rodney would always come in and do a few minutes of stand-up with the audience and instead of walking off stage he always was invited to sit down with Carson. But instead of a straight interview about a movie, book or show Rodney was still doing his rapid fire delivery of jokes. Even the audience was a part of it sometimes. Not many comics were invited after their routine to sit down with Carson but Rodney was special.
Rodney was comedic genius and light years beyond his contemporaries....he was able to find humor in every aspect of life and remind his audience to take a moment out of our busy lives to simply laugh as we are all going to be dead a very very long time.
Johnny Carson is the standard by which all talk show hosts are judged.
No one has come close to matching Johnny, Ed, & Doc.
@@jimpierce3138 i think craig ferguson and graham norton are the closest thing will see maybe conan too.
@@Kazumatempest I liked them both, but Craig and Conan never came close to Carson's ratings. Leno and Letterman had better time slots and ratings than Craig or Conan. Conan was given the Tonight Show but yanked a few months later and Leno reinstalled.
The King of one-liners.! Loved Rodney.!
Rodney was a legend, which is why he would just sit down, considered a father to many famous comedians. Many got their big break at his club Dangerfield's in NYC. But many shows he did standup first, but Johnny always had him sit with him.
Dangerfield was the 1st tape (cassette) my parents confiscated from me in the early 80's! They played it... I caught them... "ok for me, not thee!" Lol!
Easy money is a funny movie, Joe Pesci is also in it
If you can find one of Robin Williams on the Tonight Show, he comes on set, and takes the show over!! He was amazing!! Gone too soon, brilliant comedian! Rodney Dangerfield is hilarious!!
CHeers James, We shall take a look... Yes like to do another Rodney one!
One of my favorite movies of his was Back to School was awesome. Robert Downey Jr. in an early role. Ladybugs is another favorite of mine.
Care to see my Longfellow? Got me every time.
Man had a million jokes. He was a national treasure. Light and easy. Simple yet effective.
Rodney was the best, funny as hell, rofllllllllllllllll THis is what Rodney did, he was always ON, even in his movies, oml hilarious
Rodney Dangerfield wasn’t Italian-American. I think what you meant was he had a New York City accent. New York City natives, which Rodney was, have that accent, regardless of their ethnic background.
Rodney needs no introduction guys😂😂😂😂 he’s an American classic. He was well known, as was his comedic style. But I give you he is from a bygone era.
That's why when he mentioned Dr. Vinnie Boombatz everyone roared! .... he always had a few jokes about him in his stand-up!
He did a stand-up just before he sat down.
We didn’t realise! We need to revisit
You guys do what every other reactor does you YAK YAK YAK over the best lines
@yambo59
Cheers yambo59, we are just reacting and speaking our thoughts as they come, you obviously know the routine, when were we supposed to chat?
that's what we do on our channel we YAK YAK YAK..
It's Johnny Carson, not Jimmy.
I can understand you guys wanting to know who Rodney is, but at that time all Americans knew who Rodney was.
He was in the movie Caddyshack. Easy Money is another good one. He's really the same character every where you see him 😆
@FourFish47
Cheers, we were a little confused on the setup, but now understand how big Rodney was and that he had probably done a routine before sitting down to chat.
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact Completely understandable. That would be really, really weird for somebody to come on and just spit out one liners over and over if you didn't know who he was lol
It made Johnny's job real easy when Rodney came on 😃
Cheers!
You guys do realize the title is "Rodney Dangerfield at his best" it isn't his interview show. You didn't click on this to hear a documentary of his life. lol. This isn't his stand up comedy either but familiar one-liners everyone enjoys hearing. His stand-up comedy would have been more structured. Here he is just adlibbing his popular material.
@Kevin Rose
Hi Kevin, yes we realised that too, we were just thinking out loud as the clip was played.
Cheers for watching
Rodney and Robin Williams were the two guys that Johnny never had control of. They would come out and take over the show. It was always hilarious.
He was born not far where I grew up on Long Island in NY. He had that New York fast talking style. Johnny Carson knew to let Rodney go off and entertain everyone. He started his career late in life. I believe he was in his 50s when he got his big break. He had his own club in NYC and he was always there working on new stuff when not on the road.
@ESUSAMEX
Cheers and thanks for the comment and fun facts
He is funny, and he had lots of fans for being so good at one liners.
Rodney Dangerfield was a genius
Unique comedian treated uniquely by Johnny. No one like him as a guest on Carsons. Was actually refreshing away from the usual interviews.
@BRiTPOPS_REACT sorry, no clue how to write you directly
He probably came out and did about 10 minutes of stand-up before he went over and sat on the couch.
@BRiTPOPS_REACT Old man here, don't know how to direct message on RUclips.
Hi both, Rodney is so funny in movies, but I’ve never really seen him in stand up. It seems like he’s the king of the fast one liners. This is funny, poor Johnny can’t get a word in edgewise. Great upload ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When Rodney was on, it was always understood that Johnny was the setup man. Getting a word in edgewise was not in the plan for the most part. Rodney's Tonight Show appearances would start with a few minutes of standup, then he would take a seat and basically continue his standup. I had never seen him do a serious interview until I just now looked one up on RUclips. Check the interview with Bobbie Wygant.
Classic New York humor. He was an icon and was so famous that we didn’t need an interview. We were there for the one liners.
He had his own club where he helped many younger comics get their start. Watch interviews with any comic who worked for him.
Johnny had Rodney on the show at least 39 times, and he told many more jokes than would fit in an hour.
Carson was clever enough to sit back and let Rodney do his thing. That's why he was the best.
And fed straight lines
Now y’all need to watch “Easy Money”
Love Rodney! King of one liners.
It's easier to appreciate his comedy once you understand what his life was like.
There are documentaries out there on youtube worth taking a look at.
I was born in 88. This happened in 83. Man I feel old.
When I was a photographer many year ago. If anyone asked "How was your day"? I always followed up with "Ahhh, I called Anthony a fat little bastard today". It was too perfect a line to pass up.
The idea of one liners is a very old American concept of joke telling that goes back to the Minstrel Shows dating from the early 19th century to the early 20th century. The idea of a comedian talking about himself and his reactions to every day events didn't really come about until the American comedian Lenny Bruce. Funnily enough Rodney rarely repeated jokes since, as with most one liner comedians such as Bob Hope and Henny Youngman, they had joke writers and they would buy their jokes. With old comedians it was all about delivery and stage presence, not long form story telling and social events.
Carson plays the straight man to comedians and let them go. That what made him famous
He used to sell aluminium siding even when he was on Carson in the begining Carson would let him show a commercial for it
Many of the stars who came on the Tonight Show were there to promote a movie.book.record etc. You would get a clip of the movie and the set up and when the movie came out and that was usually done toward then of the persons time on the show. Most of the comedians would do a few minutes of stand up and then sit down and chat. Rodney was so well known back in the day, he didn't have to do the stand up anymore. He is an American Icon of Comedy. Dr Boombatz is in many of his stand up routines as well. He is basically a 1 liner comic. If you want more great comics---I am sure Robin Williams explaining in a Scottish accent how golf was invented. Or Steven Wright brilliant one liners that make you go....hmmm. Amongst others. Great job gents!! Cheers!
@Michael Whelan
Cheers for the info Michael, that was a little different for us but we got the idea and now we get how big Rodney was.
I think we have done a Robin Williams reaction, but nothing on Steve Wright.
Cheers for now
Remember, Americans already know who he is and he wouldn't be on many other shows in those days the Tonight Show was top of the game. If you were on that show you were a huge star! Keep up the good work guys.
This is what he did with Carson, and Carson loved it. There's no chat, because Rodney is just a character. No way he would talk out of character, about real life. He's Jake Cohen from Long Island.
Rodney had a tough time adjusting to doing movies. He was used to getting an immediate response from his audience. However, when doing his one liners on the set, the cast and crew remained silent. This troubled him. They had to explain that they couldn’t react while filming for obvious reasons. Just a little side bar l picked up years ago during one of his interviews.
You need to watch The movie “Caddyshack” He is hilarious in this one.
Well usually johnny had more of an interview with his guests, which would go on for maybe 20 minutes divided by a commercial break. It may interest you to know that this was considered the top talk show in America for over 20 years.
Dangerfield also starred in films such as "Easy Money," "Ladybugs," and "Back to School".
Caddyshack!
Rodney Dangerfield was and is still a legend. He had the quickest wit of any comedian ever.
Johnny Carson was and always will be the best talk show host in my opinion.
Rodney Dangerfield was one of a kind.
Although for some viewers now they'd probably have a stroke.
Most times BP1 you are correct the sit-down session with Johnny was more of an interview.
The acts that Johnny loved he would ask to come to the couch to do an interview.
Rodney was just Rodney.
On a side note.
Ellen Degeneres was the first female comic that Carson invited over after her routine.
greatest comedian ever!
There are other videos where Rodney comes out and does his act then comes over to talk to Johnny Carson. Johnny talks to him for a while and Rodney goes off of the questions.
He does an act before he sits down with Johnny but this was in a shorter clip. He's my favorite, was my favorite before he passed away.
If you get the chance, watch Rodney's movie "Back to School." His mannerisms are apparent and part of his charm as a comedian.
Two people got away with stealing the show from Johnny. Dangerfield and Robin Williams. Both hilarious, every time they were on.
I'm glad you brought up the lack of an actual interview. I see that too. In fact I often find that Brits and Aussies ALL interview so very well. I can't tell you how many times I got a sense of Dame Edna or Mr Bean and so many more from their appearances on chat shows.
In case my sarcasm isn't showing, I find that BP1 Always finds something to see a flaw in something American where there is none.
You just watched a comedian in character with constant motion, constant glances around and constant jokes and somehow missed he was in Character?
He is an old Vaudevillian comic and a national treasure.
After so many visits Johnny gave up on actually interviewing him
@Lift Me
Yes, we could imagine that.
We have similar comedians here, who we know will cause chaos when they are on any show.
Dangerfield knew so many jokes that he could do three or four hours in a row without repeating himself. He was constantly honing his material, so the same joke ten years later would be better than it was ten years earlier. But he would have new material all the time. Early on, he would start his routine with, "I don't get no respect," but later in his career, he would save it for later in his routine because it became such an applause line. Early bit... "I don't get no respect... every time I get on an elevator, the attendant says, 'Basement?'"
Usually he would do stand up before going over to Johny's desk for more. Most times, Johny would prompt him for subjects.
Rodney would come out and do his stand up routine, come over to sit with Johnny and basically just continue his stand up routine. Johnny would ask him a question once in a while. Rodney was absolute comedy gold.
This IS Rodney…and Johnny.
Rodney has been on Johnny's show so many times over the years that he usually comes on to promote something while doing his comic routine.
Ok guys. If you do another Rodney reaction you have to not talk after he gives a joke, cause they come so fast, there’s only time to laugh. If you want to comment during the performance pause the video first. Otherwise we can’t hear the joke. Love your reactions guys and peace. If. You like I could give you an interesting trivia on how he got on the tonight h show. They were mortal enemies. And I’ll tell you how they got respect each other
@Ronny9.79
Hello to you and thanks for the feedback.
We love to hear fun facts and trivia so feel free to poop them down.
We may follow up with more from Rodney but we do go all over the place.
@@BritPopsReact Rodney quit show bus. at 28 and didn't come back for 20 years. One night Rodney tried out a new joke at a comedy club and it got a tremendous reaction of laughter. Two nights later while watching the tonight Show with Carson and during his monologue out came Rodney's joke. A writer for Carson, was there and stole it. Rodney was furious and sent a scathing letter to Carson. Carson was furious. About 6 months later he was booked on the show but when Johnny saw his name he refused to put him on. A few years pass and he's booked again. Everyone was telling him Carson wasn't angry anymore. The night b4 his appearance, Johhny Scrubbed him. So a few months later, Johnny & a producer for tonight who knew Rodney pulled up in a limousine at the Copacabana nightclub in New York. The line to get in wrapped around the building. Rodney was there and noticed Carson and Invited them to his table. He apologized to Carson and a few nights later Rodney made his first appearance on the Tonight Show.
IN BACK TO SCHOOL
This is from early 80's when his career was pretty well established, so the audience there and at home knows Rodney and his "act" but its the same when I look even farther back into Johnny's youtube career, i see Frank Sinatra, or Mel Brooks, or Bob Newhart, I find very funny, but then they have something that just flies over my head, because it had to do with who they were at the time and I dont know about.
This show, "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" (yes, it was a talk show, as it is now...but with Jimmy Fallon hosting...between Johnny and Jimmy was Jay Lenno), was about entertainment.........the crowd expected what you see here, because Rodney was already a well-established personality...and that "personality" had certain traits. If you wanted to know more about the real Rodney, you had to read an entertainment magazine if they had an article on him, or wait to see an interview with Barbara Walters!
Even Johnny knows not to get in the way of the King of the one liners 😅
Rodney: King of one liners. Drum roll please
HIS BEST MOVIE, WAS BACK TO SCHOOL, OML SHOULD CHECK IT OUT HAHA
Only two British guys would complain that a comedian is telling too many jokes.
We Americans know a great deal about Rodney. The audience did too, so there is no reason to really interview him to find out what he is like.
@Gregory Thoman
Cheers, that does make sense, we were just "musing" and putting out our thoughts.
Now we have had some comments and feedback we know more about the situation and how the show was set up.
Cheers
@@BritPopsReact Welcome to Rodney. This was his shtick. We loved him.
Hard to see where his act--or Carson's--needs anybody's tinkering with or "fixing," but okay. Clearly these two know best. Proper experts, these two.
@Sublime Music Channel
Wow, you really know how to help out guys who are new to something and just asking questions for some feedback.
We never said we were experts in anything, just curious to learn more.
Maybe we should come check out your sublime music channel to see if it really is...

@@BritPopsReact Sorry, fellas. That's just how it hit me hearing a pair of all-time icons--the greatest American talk show host ever feeding straight lines to the last of the great American "king of the one-liners"--being "critiqued" as if they needed anybody's assistance. If it helps matters I've thumbed UP the video. Cheers. 👍
Hilarious guy, his one liners are up the top with Mitch Hedberg and Steven Wright. He was very creepy in Natural Born Killers.
Rodney Daingerfield was no ordinary guy. He was hilarious and made me laugh hysterically, and I'm not easily amused. He and Joan Rivers were the only two people who could make me laugh. My sister lived in a tiny town called Daingerfield, TX.. It was dying on the vine after after all of the areas mfg plants closed due to the Democrats moving everything out of the country to China and Mexico. Rodney heard about the town, with the name similar to his, and he decided to go there and show support for the town and try to save their local movie theater, which was also having to close down after being open for over 80 years. He went and they had a small parade in.his honor and they gave him a key to the town.They renamed a street in town after Rodney. He donated to keep the movie theater open and it survived for a few more years. Such a great man and so incredibly funny ! May he rest in perfect peace .
I'll always feel blessed everytime I think of him.
Actually Johnny Carson was the biggest star during his time as the host of his show and Rodney was the biggest comedian while he was alive. They were best friends. As British you are isolated and not aware just how big these people were. To be really big superstars you to make it in the USA.
You may have seen him in the movie Caddy Shack or Back to School, both out in the '80s.
Well everyone knows who he is and believe me they would prefer non stop jokes over talking.
Movie BACK TO SCHOOL
Watch “Caddyshack.” He’s from a different time. He’s Jewish. Not Italian. He’s from New York. That’s the accent.
Rodney is from Long Island New York and is of Jewish descent.
He was a classic!
I love watching your videos!
I think you both would wnjoy Jess Dunham. He's a ventriloquist and the best ive ever seen. His puppets all have distinct personalities so much so you forget they aren't real!
New to a channel . I like that the older guy doesn’t know some out greats . It’s cool to see an older guys reaction
You guys seemed to have picked one of the only Rodney clips WITHOUT him doing his routine on stage, its like youre only getting the part after his stage routine, just sitting down with Johhny - youre not really getting the whole bit
@yambo59
We just picked a clip that had a lot of view and had no idea what to expect, as we don't watch it first and then pretend it's the first time we have seen it.
New Sub. Hello from Los Angeles, CA!! !You guys are great! I can't ever recall Rodney giving a serious interview ever. Doesn't mean that he never did, but I never saw it. You should check out Caddyshack and Back To School to see some of his acting chops. Also, I highly recommend visiting The West Coast if you can. California alone has to some degree almost everything and more than all other states combined and if You throw in Las Vegas, The Grand Canyon and possibly Utah that is HUGE bang for Your travel buck! And if You are ever in Los Angeles I can give tons of recommendations. Avoid Summer!!!! The rest of the year is mild to perfect!
The reason he's so sweaty is, he's gakked up out of his mind. The man did enough blow to kill Ozzy Osbourne.
caddy shack
Dangerfield never really caught on until he was older maybe in his 50's. The Tonight Show was the only the only live show in its time slot of 10:30 pm to 11:59 pm Monday through Friday-that's CST. The Tonight Show was on NBC. CBS and ABC affiliates mostly played reruns of syndicated programming.
For him this is not on the edge. He did HBO specials where he is raunchy and very adult. he is all about self depricating humor
Rodney is Rat Pack, Don Rickles era, kind of comedian you see in Vegas opening for Dean Martin back in the day.
This video started after his standup performance
*Johnny Carson
@Smitty Benzo
Cheers, we got our "Carson's" mixed up
He took every opportunity. The Johnny Carson show was THE top tv show. If you did well there, it was everything for a career.
He said when young comics came to him to learn he would tell them to stop filling their routine pulling faces. Work on the writing and delivery and write a lot of material. I don’t think he would repeat these jokes the entire USA already heard on the Johnny Carson show unless he wrote new jokes building on them.
This video does not show the "stand up" routine at all. Kinda of hard to get a good idea when you DON'T SEE THE ACT!!!!!
The one liners are an old style. Its funny. I saw him in concert. He came back on 3 times. Great guy ... You guys just didnt get it. The audience did .
Usually, when he was on Carson he would do 5 minutes of his stand up routine. They may have cut it out on this video. He is practicing and trying out new jokes or one liners when he sits and talks to Carson.
At that time Dangerfield only did The Tonight Show and it was always new material.
Great assessment !
I felt the same way about Mr. Dangerfield during his prime.
Sure, he was funny man & had some great "one-liners" .... but personally I could only take his act for about five minutes.
I recommend chrcking out his mobies and his stand ups.
