    Growing up in a right handed world as a lefty brings challenges that we learn to work out by using our brains and eventually we become ambidextrous, and have the ability to use both sides of our brains and body equally well. We end up having an advantage over 90% of the population.

    • @garypautard1069
      @garypautard1069 13 дней назад +2

      Yes speaking as a Lefty I cannot see the big drama here. We adapt well for example I naturally use R/H scissors and also pliers ( I am an electrician) and with computers you can buy a cordless mouse. What is a no no is fountain pens. We cannot do nice beautiful cursive writing because this writing has a slope to the right and it cannot be done with the L/H ( shame) , but if you are that bothered there is a L/H products society.

    • @cleoowens3042
      @cleoowens3042 2 дня назад

      I agree I too had to learn to use my right hand along with my left now I can use both fairly equally. Except that I can only write with my left or throw things.

    • @markoshun
      @markoshun 15 часов назад

      @@garypautard1069Ha! You’re mostly right. (See what I did there? 😂) I’m a carpenter and I’ve adjusted to every tool I’ve ever used, some easier than others. I remember the first time I picked up a chainsaw and thought what kind of deadly BS is this! then I switched to right hand mode and the tool was fine.
      But as to lefty cursive, I’ve always produced a pronounced slant to the right. The problem with fountain pens for me, is the ink takes too long to dry so your hand drags and smears.
      Scissors, yes, there’s a technique to pull the blades together with the left. Easier with good quality scissors that aren’t totally ‘deformed’ to fit only the right hand.

    Going through school, I always took notice of how many fellow lefties there were. High school was the normal percentage. College was about 20-25%. Graduate school was 35-45%. Either lefties were more determined, or plain smarter.
    I actually had one class in grad school with 8 students. 4 righties, 4 lefties, and the teacher was a leftie! We outnumbered them 5-4. They had to use our scissors.

    I'm a 70 yo lefty, I've spent a lifetime in a rhed world, but I'm glad ! It taught me to be more adaptable, to think outside the box, which in turn has helped me in the workplace to be more valuable to my employers. I get a kick out of watching many righties using only that hand, as if the left didn't exist . When I've trained people I'll ask which hand they use, if they reply "right" , I watch carefully to see if they use their left and if they don't I'll ask if they know they have 2 hands and proceed to make them use both. I've trained lots of people and when I need to train them on a different job they are now using both. Lol, my moment in the sun. We lefties my not be brighter but we are certainly more adaptable ! Hugs ' n love 🤗🥰❤️

      My mom wouldn’t teach me to crochet because I am a lefty. I got a ball of her yarn, a hook, and a pattern and taught myself in 9th grade. I learned how to adapt patterns and I have designed my own afghans. I can’t crochet anymore because of my damaged nerves in my arm. I found a pattern for an American flag. You had to run over 20 balls of yarn to make the star section. The first time I made it I had to adapt the stitches so the flag would be correct. I made about 8 of these for raffles for the children’s hospital over time. The first one I made sold over $800 in tickets. I think that’s cool. 😎 ❤

After that i was never made to change or was never smacked for using my left hand.

    From what I'm told, I was born left-handed and made to use my right hand when I was starting to write. During my school years, I was told a number of times that the way I held a pencil was weird. I'm still not sure what they meant. I knew another guy who supposedly wrote similarly with his right-hand, and he told me that he was technically left-handed. I wonder if our pencil-holding has to do with the switch.

    Actually, I remember my 5th grade class in elementary school there were about 20 or 25 students including me in my particular room. I don't know why, but we probably had about 30 left handed scissors, and I was the only lefty in the room, so I had almost all the scissors sitting on my desk. Watching with amusement as all the rightys struggled to cut papers.
    I also remember struggling to learn to tie my shoes as a kid. My mom was getting extremely frustrated cause I was making my loop on the left side, and from her perspective it looked wrong, so she kept getting on me about doing it wrong.
    Then, she happened to be on the phone with my grandmother, who was the only other lefty in the family, and happened to mention the difficulty she was having in teaching me to tie my shoes. My grandmother told my mom to have me practice by tieing my moms shoes instead of my own. I was doing it right the whole time, but mom didn't realize what was going on until the perspective was switched and then she understood why it looked wrong to her when I tied my own shoes.

    I’m a mirror image identical twin. I’m the lefty and she’s the righty. Our dad is a righty and our mom is a lefty. Our mom is a housewife and therefore was the most hands on with us in our formative years. Though my sister is definitely a right-handed person, she is very ambidextrous in the way you expect a left-handed person to be. She can use scissors with both hands, bowl with both hands, is more comfortable wearing a watch on her right wrist the way a lefty would, etc. Because our mom was raised in the 60’s and 70’s, not a lot of things were made yet to accommodate lefties (scissors, can openers, etc.), she was forced into being relatively ambidextrous. As a result, my sister adopted quite a few of my mom’s left-handed behaviors while fostering her primary right-handed behaviors…
    As for me, I’m not very ambidextrous for a left-handed person! Despite my mom showing us how to use scissors with her right hand, I never adapted to that and stuck with using my left hand. Sure, I never could cut in a straight line, but it must have been passable enough for my elementary school teachers in the 1990’s. I hate having to pay almost $10 for left-handed scissors online when right-handed ones are cheap and at every store. I am only able to use a can opener with my left hand and twist with my right, despite attempts to teach me the traditionally right-handed method. Never had issues with getting it to work somehow! Pens and pencils are hellish! Binders and notebooks were too (thank the Lord I don’t need them anymore)! I write entirely in cursive, which is sadly reaching obsolescence. However, it was frustrating being in the third grade learning it, smearing the ink/lead, getting them on my shirt. I adapted, of course, and I now know how to hold the pen without smearing much (if at all). Though, to be fair, the BIC pens I use all the time are incredibly reliable in that regard!
    Being left-handed is awesome, despite our rarity! Our mom and I were the only lefties until our older (right-handed) brother married his wonderful left-handed wife in 1996! It took them five tries to bless our family with a left-handed child! In 2020, their fifth and final child was born. She, from the get-go, was doing things primarily with her left hand! Now that she’s a happy little toddler, her lefty status is solidified! Now our big family has four left-handed people! Somehow, all of us are women/girls!
    Edit: I’m a CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician). When I first started working in pharmacy, I got a job with my left-handed sister-in-law. She had been a CPhT for about 15 years at that point. Back when she started, they didn’t make pill counting trays for lefties, so she had to adapt with the right-handed ones. When I started in 2015, the lead pharmacist happily ordered a left-handed tray for me. I was struggling to count pills at a decent pace right-handed, so I was thankful for this gift!
    I often wonder why I cannot adapt to right-handed things. While I have never pursued lessons (my parents obstinately said no when band lessons were offered in 4th grade), I have always wanted to play the drums. I naturally hold the sticks the way a lefty would. As a little kid, I held them this way, despite seeing my favorite singer, Karen Carpenter, playing like any other right-handed player. Without a kit of my own to decide, I don’t know if I would play open-handed, or reposition the kit for a left-handed player. Maybe some day I’ll find out. I am in the early stages of learning guitar. Naturally, there was no way my obstinately left-handed self was going to learn with a traditional guitar. I had to pay over $50 more for a model made for lefties that isn’t supplied in store, meaning extra shipping costs on top of the >$50. I am not very good at it so far, but I know going for a left-handed guitar was best!
    I don’t know what it is about me that has made me more resistant to right-handed behaviors. It isn’t that I don’t want to adapt out of laziness. It’s just that, even in my formative years, it was obvious that I simply couldn’t wrap my mind around the tasks in a right-handed manner. Maybe I’m just some kind of “true” lefty? Our mom heard that term once. Not sure if that’s actually a thing. I do have epilepsy and have had it since I was 12. My sister has seizures too, but maybe one or two a year (at most). I can have up to 20 in a month if I’m having a rough spell. Maybe that has something to do with it, but it doesn’t account for my early childhood. Also, our mom had to have an emergency C-section to deliver us because the doctors couldn’t wake me up. They ran scans and realized I had the umbilical cord wrapped around my arm. The doctors said that, if I had been born naturally, I would have been born with significant brain damage and cerebral palsy. While no scans after I was born showed signs of trauma, maybe something small happened that made me the way I am? I don’t know. Just a long tangent!

    Back in high school when we took the ACT, the students were given surveys to see if we needed accommodations to comfortably test, and one question on the sheet was "Are you left handed?" And so I put yes and turned it in. Two weeks later I came into my testing room and instead of getting a left-handed desk I had another desk pushed against mine instead to rest my arm on.

    When my wife and I started dating, I helped her fold some laundry. I could tell by the way she was watching me that she wasn’t happy about something. It took a little effort to get the truth out, she said I was folding the towels “backwards” because of my left handed. Personally, I really don’t think it matters. A man could not care any less about the orientation of the folds in a towel. All he is concerned with is drying off after a shower.

    I was today years old when I realized how big of a deal scissors were for left handed people. I thought it wasn't a big deal since I've always used them upside down, and thought it was the same as using them normally. When she said it was difficult I realized that I've always hated being task to use scissors in class because I took too long. I thought it was because I was a perfectionist and took my time but I'm reality is that you need to drag whatever you're cutting to a certain angle in order for the scissor to start cutting. I was scolded by the teacher for taking longer at times, and often fell a little behind of my classmates, it makes more sense now.

    As a Left handed guy, I have no problem with all the things that are made for Right handed people. Actually right handed things are a lot easier to use for Left handed people you people Just didn't realize that YET! With many years I have learned and trained my right hand to be as Equal as my Dominant Left hand. The result is, I became Ambidextrous meaning I can use both of my hands equally and dominantly. I can play Acoustic Guitar with both Left and Right hand, I can shoot my AR-15 and my other rifles in both Left and Right hand straight and accurately. I can also Write in both Left and Right hand that's why Practice makes perfect. I can hit, drive and sink a 3-1/2 inch Common nail in a lumber in just 1 hit in both Left and Right hand equally. I had knocked down a 6ft 5 tall guy in a bar fight using only my right hand stiff jab and I haven't unleashed my Straight Left YET and he falls down like a house of card. 6ft5 tall guy he's taller than me! I'm only 5ft9 tall.
