  • In this video, I set off in my camper van with high hopes of amazing Landscape Photography conditions. I pack my Fuji X-T3 and new 35mm f1.4 lens and park up in the Lake District for the evening. Unfortunately the weather is not quite what I had hoped for, so I adapt and shoot to the conditions I am given. Enjoy.

Eccentric Smithy I'm kind of with you. Seriously, I like his work, but he is more and more exagerated. A video of 18 mins for two photos? Really? I get that impression that he learned that longer videos might be better for his income, but that's a shame. I skipped half of the video because I wanted to see the real scenery of his photos instead of him cooking tea and speaking about his cozy van life.

@@derVlogdahalt Completely disagree. RUclips has no shortage of landscape and travel shooters who go a lot more quickly. The whole point of Thomas Heaton is that he is the opposite of that. He absolutely shows the reality of taking pictures when hiking or camping. It IS slow moving. Thats why we do it.

Woke up at 5am this morning, after about 3 hours sleep, had to drive 30 miles to meet a friend before work and pick up some equipment I had loaned him.
Car was packed up with everything because I thought I might go for a shoot later today (that didn't happen,) but I woke to a thick blanket of fog/low cloud over the jungle at home. I would loved to have taken a side trail down to the river before dawn but with a decent drive to a scheduled roadside meeting to make, I didn't have time. Not this morning. But tomorrow is another day and I'm thinking of getting up early again to shoot some of that sweet predawn gloaming B roll, fog or no fog.
It's one thing to know you're blessed, it's another to take a moment to truly appreciate it. I think in that lies the secret to true happiness.
I'm stoked for you that you're enjoying your van and the time in it.

I got into Landscape Photography two years ago and learned pretty much everything I know from your videos and just getting out and practicing - I like to think I’m not bad at it now! The reason this video rings so true is that you perfectly capture what it’s like to be a landscape photographer - yes there are lots of RUclips landscape vloggers now, but not one of them captures the essence of this pursuit like you do. And it’s always in videos when you’re on your own - which is what most of us always are in landscape photography. Thanks, Tom. Inspiration as always.

You made a great point at the end there Thomas. If you throw enough balls at a coconut stand, you're going to win a coconut. It's like wildlife documentaries. We see 30 mins of amazing footage but the crew had to live and film there for 3 patient months to get it. You pros are out there full time chasing the image so although you have the better gear and experience the main reason you get so many killer shots is down to having a greater volume of chance, if that makes sense. Lesson to all, including myself, is to get out there more.

Sorry, just having some fun at your expense... 😁. Jokes aside your words of wisdom are spot on. Those extraordinary shots you see are as much a case of right place fight time, as they are the skill of the photographer. Location conditions you can’t control. But I think we have to learn to deal with the conditions we've been given and search for other compositions or subjects that do fit to the current conditions. I know that it can be so disappointing to not get the shot you were hoping for.. But it's also so wonderful when you get an image you've never expected to get or maybe never thought of taking in other conditions!

I always enjoy these videos where things do not go to plan. Perfect conditions are about 10% of my photography. For me I enjoy the challenge to find compositions when conditions are not favourable for whatever reason. Its a bit like restricting which lens you use. Some years ago my wife and I went to New Zealand and we generally take similar images. I decided that for the majority of the time I would only use the 70-200mm (all bets off if a magnificent composition presented itself :) ). We came back with a lot of different perspectives of the trip and I felt a lot more confident in finding an interesting image.

Funnily enough I find landscape photography is helping my perfectionism rather than feeding it...I enjoy my photography so much more when I accept the hand I’m dealt and just try to do the best I can. Saying that the perfectionism kicks in at the end of the process when I look at my final image and think of all I could do better! 😄 Thanks for another awesome and inspiring video!

Nothing can beginn or end without a cup of tea. How complex is the b roll. I think it's awesome how much you can say about your approach. Out of the ordinary.

You say that the cinematic filming of cooking isn't your thing but I find it therapeutic and you in the camp van adds a touch of a cosy feeling having all the devices and utensils at hand, so cool. I wanna get a camp van now lol such a chilled video, then onto the Pano which was lovely I thought, I'd be happy to see that on my wall, the next one though does top it, absolutely beautiful shot!

Loved this video, the story all the work that went into it. This really shines. I liked both images they're just two distinct images. my choice, the light on the silver birches

TH: it is endlessly refreshing and encouraging to hear you say it is usually disappointing. Can’t thank you enough. It actually injects a positive attitude straight into the heart of my generally disappointing practice of landscape work. So again, thanks!

Tom, this is one of the best videos you have done. Brilliant B-roll and sound editing. II I see you out and about when I am out touring the UK in my campervan then I'll be sure to say hello.

Great vlog Thomas! Well put together. The pano was great, but I did really like the silver birch shot at 14.35. Nice One! They may get the weather correct one day, you never know!

Actually, this video hits home. Your heart as an artist wants to capture something Amazing. However the journey to be on the hunt and the pain of not getting the shot makes the shot when you get it worth so much. Thomas Heaton's videos feel almost like a spiritual journey. I enjoy them allot.

Great video and welcome to the wonderful world of Fuji primes! Primes may not be as versatile, but their restricted FOV really helps to make me creative. Also, the F2 versions are super weather sealed so you can now go out and shoot in a deluge! Have fun!
