    Having just had solar panels and batteries installed (6kw (14x 430W DMEGC Panels) Array, 2x 5kw Puredrive Batteries and 6kw Solis Inverter) and it being commissioned today I am now trying to figure out the best tariff for me. Currently loving Octopus for the 3rd year (just started) and on their Loyal Octopus Fixed tariff, but now considering moving onto either Flux or something else that would be better benefit to me with my new installation. Ive heard differing things and genuinely am stuck! I had considered Octopus Outgoing but that is - as the name suggests - a Export Tariff only :D

      Hi James - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
      Exciting times! Yes you're right you'll need to find an import and export tariff that meets your household consumption and takes into account your self consumption too. I made a more recent video and more powerful spreadsheet (month by month data entry) which should be helpful for you deciding. ruclips.net/video/61w5JEY3xz0/видео.html

    I will use this spreadsheet so many thanks! I think the comparison you’ve made though, to someone without solar and batteries, should be calculated using the best tariff they would use given they have no solar or batteries.
    Hope that makes sense as I’ve not yet started to use the spreadsheet so maybe I’m misreading how it does the comparison. PS: assuming, one M.

      Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Glad you found it useful.
      You're right and the electricity consumption data is PRE solar and battery installation which allows the spreadsheet to forecast the savings. Sorry if this wasn't clear, but hopefully clears things up now. In this newer video I compare tariffs and the spreadsheet has been updated. ruclips.net/video/VA1XmB7aTlA/видео.html

    Good video, I have been doing this myself this week and feel you need more detail to get a true comparison. I put in my average half hourly data for 2022 and put that against the average half hourly generation for the PV. This then shows the battery charge so when it's full and exporting. I found without an EV Flux us better, but once my EV arrives, Go is going to come out better (assuming mileage takes over 20kW per day. Next, I want to build in daily half-hour solar generation figures so I can show how summer and winter differ.

      I completely agree, the more data to go with the better the information out at the end. 30 minute data would take some inputting though, but not impossible. Yes, I agree Flux is better without an EV, hence the hybrid approach works best for me.

    Love the videos. I got a quote from Octopus, need to arrange a follow up call before committing but not sure what to say. Quote was 8 panels @405 w, GiV 5.2kw bat and GiV hybrid converter. I have 4 bed det house, no shading, 27m2 SW facing roof with no roof widows. My annual elect usage is around 2300kwH/yr . Should I upgrade the battery and or increase the number of solar panels etc? Thanks so much, Ian

      Hi Ian - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Glad you found it useful an thanks for the kind words.
      For me I'd always say max out on the solar - it's a lot easier to retrospectively add more battery storage than it is to add more solar. In terms of how big your battery storage is I'd look at sizing it to 1.2x your peak consumption. It's well worth getting at least 3 quotes for your install if you haven't already. We used IVoltz (based in Doncaster) who cover most of the UK and this is my install ruclips.net/video/E--CeLLsF_Q/видео.html

    We changed to flux a month or so ago (was on the standard variable tariff). Transfer to Octopus and Import sorted out quite quickly, now waiting for the DNO to issue an export MPAN. 😴 Been a month already but could take some time. Annoying watching all the unpaid export we generate every day,
    We don’t have an EV so probably will move to Octopus Cosy for the winter when our electricity demand exceeds solar generation.
    Just one correction, 4:20, if you have a FIT array (we do), yes you have to give up deemed export, but it is not a permanent move, you can revert back to FIT deemed export after a year. Both OfGem and my FIT payer confirmed this from the T’s & C’s. We have a much bigger 10.4kW non-FIT array so I still think it’ll be worth it though

    • @everythinghome

      Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
      Yes, you're correct - we got two different pieces of advice two different times I enquired. After making the video and deciding to give up the deemed export payments EDF clarified the following position: 'As the rules of the FIT Scheme state you are only able to change your export option once every 12 months, should you wish to opt back in to receiving FIT export this would not be possible until after 01/04/2024. Please also be advised that as you now have a meter that can measure export, should you decide to opt back in to the FIT Scheme for export you will no longer be able to receive a deemed payment and will instead receive metered export payments. This is in line with the Feed in Tariff Ofgem Guidance.'

    • @geoffreycoan
      @geoffreycoan Год назад

      Yes I saw that bit in the FIT scheme rules as well, that if you have a smart meter you have to be paid for actual FIT export not deemed export.
      But given I've got a second non FIT array with batteries, how they'd work out the actual FIT export I don't know.
      Unlikely to want to go back to FIT export but I wanted to know that it's an option as Flux and other similar tariffs could change or be pulled in the future

    • @everythinghome
      @everythinghome  Год назад

      Yup - that's exactly the same as us. 2015 FIT benefitting array and then more solar and a battery added late 2022 and as you say unlikely to ever want to go back to deemed export unless something catastrophic happens!

I inputted my data as best i could from my supplier & solar system installer and exspected a nice result regarding payback years and ROI. I ended up with negative values, I only filled in first quarter as i had my system installed in Feb. 2022, therefore the following quarters ie. Apr - Jun July -Sep Oct to Dec would not tally up as i was then on solar if you get my meaning. could you please advise as to what i am doing wrong or have i missed something , many thanks .

      The consumption figures are PRE solar and battery. So if you use post figures you may end up with negative figures. If you've not already done so use the pre solar and battery consumption data you have. The other thing is inputting a realistic self consumption of solar only.

    I have a new solar + batteries system and an EV and PHEV to charge. At the moment I'd need to be exporting over 470kWh per month for Flux to be better than Go . I'll keep an eye on how much I export but it looks at the moment that I'm better off pumping excess into the cars and hot tank

My standing charge comes to 42p perday £153 ayear.. So I am toying with switching to a No Standing charge tarffi,,, his is via a prepaid meter and a price of 58p for the first 2 kwh and a lower price after that.. I think it would work for me...any thoughts?

      Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
      Interesting. I've not come across a no standing charge option. I think you'd need to look at your usage numbers and then work out if it would be worth switching to the tariff you're making reference to. This should be helpful keeping track of the numbers. You'd need to add the standing charge but should be straight forward to do as an add on.

    Good video. Crumbs this is complicated. Seems the best deal might be flux for summer, Go for winter? But we have a 77kwh EV and I think I need the extended hours of lower rate to charge it ( the ev charges at 7kw with our old school car charger so would require a very sunny day to charge on solar alone!) I might stick with Intelligent Go and fixed rate for simplicity …?

    • @everythinghome
      @everythinghome  Год назад

      Hi Karen - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Glad you found it useful.
      It's definitely complicated! It all depends on how much you need to import vs your potential export. I'm charging at night on Flux over 3 hours but you may need more depending on your mileage. Simplicity would say stick with Go or Intelligent. But, it also depends on your solar generation. Hence the spreadsheet. Best of luck 😬

      I think I would do the same if in the same position. I'm tempted by pushing some to the grid from the battery between 4-7pm - it would probably be an hours export so around 3 kWh but I'm protective of the battery. It's a great dilemma to have some good paying export options.

      Hi Ian - Thanks for taking the time to watch, comment on this video and supporting the channel.
      There are a few things which may do it - Is your consumption particularly low, are you overpaying on the cost of install, what export rate are you factoring in - exporting in the spring/summer made a big difference to my figures.

    • @ianroberts9037
      @ianroberts9037 Год назад +1

      I use your Flux figures as I’m also in NE and my roof is the same orientation as yours. My consumption is lower at approximately 4500 kWH / year. I put your installation costs in too but get 19 years. The payback period reduced until the battery is about 4.5 kWH.
      I wonder if my Solar peak @ 4.7 kW is simply too small.

    • @everythinghome

      Thanks for the extra info. The spreadsheet assumes you'll be topping the battery up to full off peak minus your daily solar generation. I found a similar pattern when I added a bigger or 2nd battery it nearly doubled my payback time.

    Interesting video, thanks. With the approach of using Octopus Go in the winter months and Octopus Flux in the summer months, what export tariff would cover the winter months? Outgoing Octopus cannot be used with Octopus Go, hence I am currently pairing Go with another provider's export tariff on a 1 year arrangement. I wouldn't be able to switch this 3rd party export to/from Flux every 6 months. Does Octopus offer another export tariff that I've missed which can be switched every 6mo?

    • @everythinghome
      @everythinghome  Год назад +2

      Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Glad you found it useful.
      In the winter months I would go back to the SEG which currently offers 4.1p per kWh as you can't be on Go and one of the Outgoing Octopus tariffs (Fixed/Agile). Link: octopus.energy/help-and-faqs/articles/seg-tariff/
      Or you could go rouge and take your export to another provider. For me (as per running the numbers in the spreadsheet) Flux export payments in the summer make it worthwhile and it wouldn't make sense for me to lock myself in somewhere else at a lower rate when solar generation will be significantly lower.

    Couple of questions.. at the moment the Octopus App does not show actual cost of energy use when you are on the Agile tariff as the calculations rely on the PxQ based upon the prevailing p per kWh rate. Does this Mini change the app so the actual costs are now displayed or is it only showing you the kWh import in real-time.
    And on the GlowMarkt IHD CAD, I have just returned mine for a refund as there is a bug in their Agile screens which essentially meant whenever you exported to the grid (from my solar PV rig) the unit would deduct the value of that export from what it had calculated you had spent on import, but using the Agile import tariff as the export tariff. The manufacturer denied it was a bug, but on some days my totals were a minus figure, even though I had imported and so would be charged. I was pretty disappointed as this was the only unit I had found which supported Agile in real-time, but unfortunately the totals ended up being inaccurate. How have your experiences been with the IHD ?
    Really enjoy the videos BTW..

    Before fairly recently I had a tariff with just one rate, so when entering my Electricity consumption data I can't accurately say what is Peak and what is Off Peak. What do you recommend?

      Thanks Barry - I see - you could try estimating the usage figures for both the off peak and peak figures and try running the numbers again. As I mentioned on FB feel free to send me a screenshot to the channel's email address if you want me to have a look, thanks Shan

    Amazing video! I’ve got a lot of solar but no battery. Am I still eligible for the tariff ? Can’t seem to find the answer in the FAQs!

      Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. Glad you found it useful.
      I believe you need solar AND a battery for Flux.

      @@everythinghome I have completed the Flux sign up pages with Octopus today and 1 of the questions is "do you have a battery". I chose NO as this is the case and the change of tariff is being processed by Octopus so it would appear that a battery is not required.

      That's interesting to know. I interpreted their FAQs in that you needed to have both. Thanks for taking the time to comment, should help someone else out 👍🏽

    Seems that Octopus are being very creative with their tariffs, but seem to centre around- intelligent for EV's, Flux for solar and batteries, not nothing for those fortunate enough to have both. Currently I am on Go at 7.5p off peak until September and load shift in winter, so probably will stay where I am for now.

      Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
      I suspect you're right staying on that tariff for the time being. It's a good rate and keeps things simple. Unless of course you have a mega solar system which creates a huge amount of export 😉

    Why the 02:00-05:00 rate, those lucky people who have home hydro or a wind turbine

      Hi - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment on this video.
      Why not? I wouldn't describe the people who have invested in renewables lucky necessarily. Like those who invested in solar panels when the first FIT came out now benefit from those amazing FIT rates which are no more. But they were brave enough to invest and pay higher installation costs.

      @@everythinghome true, my fault for not being clear, I meant lucky as in they live with a clear flow of water and or air they can harness.
      If you've got those resources to hand, it's very fortunate

      Possibly lucky, but it's one thing to have something and another to use it to its full potential. All the best.

      Hi Peter, thank you for the feedback on that. Sorry about that. It seems to be working for me but I agree I think this element is a bit quieter.
      One of the things to buy next is a new microphone so your feedback is useful. In the interim maybe try increasing the play volume on the RUclips slider itself.
      Thanks again,
