Here's my iPhone 13 Pro camera review sharing my thoughts on all 3 cameras, portrait mode, cinematic mode, ProRaw, ProRes, photography styles, low light and night photography and much more.
Should you buy the iPhone 13 as a beginner photographer? All is answered in this video.
#iphone13pro #iphonecamera #iphone13
The lens flare is a non issue compared to the bigger issues. Smart HDR is a big issue and you should be complaining about that only. Once they let us disable Smart HDR, then we can start complaining about the lens flare. Smart HDR ruined mobile photography for me. It adds too much sharpening and it adjusts the colors way too much. Sky is fake blue and people’s faces are orange. iPhone 8 didn’t have these issues.
Same here, went from 8 Plus to 13 Pro Max - the worst thing ever. It killed my mobile photography over night. Horrible processing and no control in any mode, even in the RAW mode which should be the "Pro" mode. Horrible.
Just got the 13pro max and I don't like the camera very much at all and actually think I prefer my old 7+...Here's why..There's no native option to take a photo that's accurate of real life. It automatically applies a heavy HDR filter that imo looks unatural and over sharperned...overal shit. THere's no option anymore with the 13 pro max to turn HDR off. Yesterday I took a photo in the kitchen on a gloomy evening and the photo would have you think it's high noon mid summer. Also seems to add some kind of thick skin color filter as well. Great camera for social media in the moment pics you don't really want to save as keepsakes to remember sentimental moments years later where you want a accurate representation to that moment in time. Too much automatic post processing you have no control over with this new iphone imo
Same here. Can't believe reviewers never mention this. It might be great for video, but photos on this thing are just crap, unrealistic and overprocessed. Especially people photos. And iOS still doesn't let you disable this childish HDR.
Please where you able to fix this issue? I just go 13pro the pictures quality isn’t great
Agreed. I have the 13 Pro and the overprocessing is terrible. It's like it cranks edges to the max and removes all detail. It's particularly bad on the telephoto lens. I use my phone to take reference photos for engineering work, and it's a huge problem because it makes it impossible to see fine print on circuit boards.
Really good review and very informative. Thank you.
Hey Mike, one thing to consider with the cinematic mode video is assuming Apple continues to improve their algorithm, what you record today will look better in the future. The depth map won’t improve in resolution, but the ML algorithm that interprets the map and creates the bokeh and handles the edges will get better over time. I doubt many people will revisit old videos to check for improvements, but maybe? It would be great for videos of your kids now, to view years from now for example. Love your content!
All great points. For me, whenever I shoot with my phone it's because I'm sending a photo of something to a friend.
I don't use my phone to take photos I intend to keep. It sounds like that won't be changing for a while!
thanks for this honest review
You can change the iso& the shutter speed in the iPhone native camera, but you have to dig for it
Really good and honest review. It’s a great phone with some much potential to create some amazing images and content but needs more updates to be perfect 👍I upgraded from iPhone XS Max
We’ve upgraded from the same phone!
iOS 15.1 beta 3 adds control for macro shooting and ProRes. You can turn off the automatic switching to macro mode in Settings
Please compare image quality of iPhone 13 pro with Fuji X100V.
Great review. I would love to hear your thoughts on pixel 6 pro
Great video and I've subscribed! On the point of portrait mode and cinematographic videos, using the simulated bokeh effect pumped up to f2.0 😂 to achieve a Noctilux creamy background is a no go. However, by clicking up the f stops to a greater depth of field, the background is just a bit out of focus where issues with hair, fingers & glasses go unnoticed, and, thanks to this slight blur, the subject stands out for the viewer - this is actually the effect I'm looking for when using these gadget effect and definitely not to imitate my full frame Sony. There's just something to be said for having a well preforming camera in your back pocket.
For macro mode, it's actually great for photographers who love that not to have to add an adapter to take cool shots.
You can shoot in prores on the 128 gig model, you are just limited to 1080p 30. The 256+ models will do 4K 30
Its photos not pho'os!
Lol
@@MikeChudley 😂 other than that, a great review 😅👍🏼
I am thinking to buy m50 m2. I have I phone 11 pro. What do u suggest.
I had an 11pro and upgraded to the 13pro there is something wrong with the camera on the 13, I often get a haze over my pics, my lens is spotless and clean and it’s usually when I am taking a pic in a room with a light or lamp it throws a white haze over the pic which is annoying
That is very annoying, I don't seem to have that problem. Hope you get it fixed soon!
If you have a case take it off and try again. On the wider cameras they do catch the case in the shot and create a dull haze on photos.
I have the same problem, For a split
second, the image looks normal then all the
colors are dulled. The pictures are awful. If you
happen to know a way to turn this feature off,
that would be incredibly helpful. I fear it is that
Smart HDR thing.
I switched over to s21u such a great camera but iphone is on another level Camera wise, because the cameras are optimised for apps like tiktok Instagram etc. I like the fact that pro iphones only have three cameras. It doesn't overwhelm you I have my DSLR if I want features. iPhones simplicity and ease of use is why I will probably switch back. However, for photography s21u and iPhone 13 pro are extremely similar.
You nailed it.
He nailed it.
Yes Iphone 13 pro is in a league of it's own right now with camera phones, but Samsung will want to dethrone it with the S22 ultra.
iPhone 13 pro’s cameras got some best features and at the same times worst ..
Lense flare on iPhone13 pro is the worst thing which can ruin your whole video if you are in close contact with lights but s21 U ‘s flares are not as bad …much easier to avoid. Ultra’s pictures are better than iPhone’s
HDR is stunning but only on apple’s devices
Low light pictures and videos are not better than s21 u
Battery life is 3 time better than s21u while filming 4K 60p
I switched over … but I regret
No doubt some features are better
@@beautifulscotland4u nighttime videos on s21 are noisy as hell, photos are indeed better on s21, but the overall consistency of photos will be better on iphone
Finally someone who is not a fan boy and explains when to recommend a dedicated cam and just the iPhone for beginners. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Just gotta be honest haven’t we haha
@@MikeChudley after what I have seen, I believe that apple must have bought a lot of RUclips’s regarding their portrait and cinematic modes. Don’t understand me wrong, I have an iPhone 11 Pro and I am a fanboy. But the bokeh is still shit to not so shitty but crap, depending on the light.
Well done
You can go to settings and go to camera and turn off auto macro
This is great they added it.
About the macro enabling when you get close to something. They said they are gonna add the feature to control it in the next software update, at least that's what Matti Haapoja said.
The ability to turn it on/off was available from Monday .
LiDAR is great on the 13 pro max. The f stop can be adjusted after the shot in portrait mode and it looks great. Now there is control over macro 15.1 will bring it. Dslr lens do the exact same thing when you shoot directly into a light. 15.1 will bring pro res. I am already using it
For a split
second, the image looks normal then all the
colors are dulled. The pictures are awful. If you
happen to know a way to turn this feature off,
that would be incredibly helpful. I fear it is that
Smart HDR thing.
Rubbish! No one is zooming in 200% and looking at hair outlines on iPhone shots lol. Plenty of pro photographers have been taking excellent photos with portrait mode the past 2 weeks. Pro tip. Take the aperture from f/2.8 to around f/5.6 on portrait mode and Cinematic mode for a more realistic look. Get better.
Yeah the portrait mode is solid now. Sure it’s not gonna be perfect but it’s way better now compared to when it first came out with the 7 Plus. I agree taking it down to 5.6 or higher helps make the blur look more natural. I can just imagine how beast cinematic mode will be in a few more years. 👍
@@chinitopinoy1726 their portrait mode even with lidar is still much worse than older pixel phones with single lens. Not that it's not "useable" and you can't create something amazing but the fact it's been so long and it's still garbo is saying something. There really isn't much improvement on their depth calculation since iphone 8 plus/ iphone X. In the end consistency is important to some people. If you don't care, cool. This guy does. And plenty of other phones are much better on this aspect as well. Really no reason Apple with their R&D budget can't figure out.
@@SG-zf8ey I mean I’ve had both the 8 Plus and 13 Pro and I do see a big difference in edge detection at lest for me. But to each their own I guess. I know some may have higher standards. I’ve never used a Pixel before but I’m sure it’s great. Again, I’m not saying portrait mode is perfect or will replace a real DSLR, but it sure is something I would use in certain situations where I don’t have my mirrorless with me.
@@chinitopinoy1726 portrait mode was better on iPhone 7 Plus… that phone didn’t add unnecessary saturation adjustments or sharpening like the new iPhones do. The new Smart HDR is hideous and it cannot be disabled. (Smart HDR refers to those edits I mentioned, not dynamic range). It’s the reason why I love iPhone 7/8/X. Those were the last of the best iPhone cameras.
"Get better" - Mate you do head shots for a living. You are barely a photographer and scraping the absolute bottom of the barrel in terms of creativity and talent. Anyone with a camera can do your job. Where are your videos?
That’s funny because I use very often portrait mode, and don’t use super wide angle at all. Lol We are different luckily 😀 so yes, honest review from HIS point of view haha…
The Iphone 13 pro camera is on another level due to the LiDAR sensor.
In the new beta there is a seperat button to switch to macro mode!
This is good to know; thanks Matt
Sadly, it's not quite that... you can turn it off, and then it won't switch, but if you then want to use it again, you need to go into setting and turn it back on.
I got the 12pro back in June, and then returned it to see if the 13 Pro would have the lens flare too! Sadly it does. For me i don't care about nighttime photography as much, but i didn't like the lens flare on photos indoors when the light from chandeliers in my house would catch on it and then the lens flare would be over people's faces in photos sometimes. Then, i worry what the lens flare will be like during christmas photos indoors with lights everywhere YIKES! But, maybe it won't be as bad as i imagine. I'm coming from a 6 and really need a new phone! hahaha. So, i can't really wait any longer. I just wish the lens flare wasn't an issue. I mean i feel we are paying 50% of the cost of the phone just for the camera quality. That's $500. I mean, yeah i could probably buy a mirrorless camera for that price but i do like my phone having a good camera too. ohhh iPhone! The billions they have and yet they have lens flare ( which i know most people find it a none issue, but to me it's a big one). When i returned my 12 Pro to the store the Apple guy at the end asked why i was returning it and i was like " Yeah, i hate the lens flare so i figured to wait for the 13" and the guy just sort of rolled his eyes in a way at me like i was ridiculous. Also, when i called apple support they acted like they didn't know ANYTHING about this- lol. I was like you know "LENS FLARE" people complain about it alot. I just wish they brought back the audio jack! I'm horrible at charing my earbuds! So good old wired headphone come in handy.
Was that the leather apple case or the silicone apple case?
Apple Leather - thanks for watching.
I watched your content for the first time. I am an eye doctor from Pakistan, and I think you should really start taking macro close ups of your eyes as well, as you have beautiful eyes, bro... it can be used by stamp and coin collectors as well...
I’d love to see a video of how to shoot in pro raw then how to take that image into Lightroom and edit it. A comparison with a standard image edit vs raw image edit would also be very interesting. Great video
Thanks for watching! Sounds like a cool idea - I’m sure lots of people have made that?
@@MikeChudley in terms of iPhone 13 quality I mean, looking at just what is possible with the new cameras ☺️
@@MikeChudley please do that comparison.
you reminded me of Jay Palfrey, another lad from UK, who visited here as well, I mean Pakistan.. you can check his channel
i disagree with you. I love the portrait mode on the iphone. And you can edit later the depth of field.
That’s fair enough. It’s nice to know some people do like it tbf. I won’t ever use it though haha
@@MikeChudley cause you are too cocky😂 this is phone you should appreciate it..its not just use for camera...you are worst reviewer i ever seen😂😂
out of curiosity, why do you not want to use a 3rd party app for photos?
Because you don't have manual controls with the native app and people might wanna change their settings not shoot in automatic .
Nobody is using digital zoom, the iphone max zoom is 77mm why you tuber always mentioned that the digital zoom ist bad ? Thats true for any digital zoom
I think you answered your own question about why Apple doesn’t have manual mode with the native app. It’s because third party app developers already do it and generate revenue with it.
The cámaras are big on purpose, it so people can distinguish the iphone with in seconds from any other smartphone, they all start to look similar. It's about status, HEY I HAVE THE NEWEST IPHONE! it's a statement. 🤷🏻♀️
That’s why they keep the notch as well - stands out it’s iPhone straight away
I "upgraded" from the Samsung note 10 to the iPhone 13 pro and I am shocked at how terrible the photos are! The Note 10 blows it out the water. Even the iPad mini 6 takes better photos. The photos come out looking like watercolour paintings the are so over processed.
First time a green lens flare has been mentioned I think I'm going to stick to Samsung and wait for the s22 ultra ✌
Yeah it’s very annoying haha - although my friend who uses a s21 ultra also gets the same strange lens flare
You can absolutely control everything (ISO, SS etc.) if you just install one of the many, many other camera apps. It's a bit odd to criticize the main camera app for not both indulging amateurs and pros.
It seems like something apple could easily include thats all - thanks for watching 👍🏻
@@MikeChudley Sure - but then the app wouldn't be as simple to use as it is. I'm just surprised why you say you review the camera on the iPhone 13 Pro when it's actually just the app from Apple you talk about and its well-known limits. The camera is capable of so much more and if you're a professional you'd probably use dedicated apps for filming and photographing like FiLMiC Pro and Moment.
@@andreasdk I hear your point. But as a professional we’re definitely not going to use our phones or any app within a phone.
I reviewed the native camera app from the point of view of a professional but as someone who would use it normally.
This wasn’t a review as a professional to create professional work phones are not meant for that ✌🏻

You re wrong, Portrait mode is really good, depend of the situation but you can get amazing results, and i m a photographer

The iPhone is on another level altogether. The S21 is still using a four year old sensor and non-optimised software. Not really that close.
That’s interesting to know. I’ve never used the S21 personally so I can’t comment too much. Thanks for watching!
What are you even talking about, get some knowledge before speaking nonsense or spreading lies, ISOCELL HM3 is 2021 sensor, also every sensor on S21 Ultra is larger than 13 Pro Max. Not to mention that iPhones still use the smallest sensors on the market when talking about top end flagship phones, Main is 1/1.7" (Sony IMX703), telephoto is 1/3.4" (Sony IMX713) and also same size tiny 1/3.4" sensor for Ultra-Wide (Sony IMX772), literally the smallest Ultra-Wide sensor on the market when talking about top end flagships and it shows specially in low light. Also 12 Pro Max to 13 Pro Max, sensor sizes basically did not change at all besides aperture, yet Apple increased size of rings/housing of the camera array just to make impression of "huge camera sensors", while in reality it is not true at all, great marketing as ever by Apple.
