I love Trading Places, too. The performances and the writing for the characters are so essential for a movie like this, because essentially they're just using a very broad, archetypal premise (rich guy and poor guy trade lives). In its outlines, the story is extremely basic and familiar; what make it special are the characters and their hijinks. And it's not like they just have two great leads, either. The Duke brothers are exactly what I want from comedy villains: extremely loathsome and extremely fun to watch. I love every second they're on screen, and yet I still can't wait to see them get their comeuppance. And Jamie Lee Curtis plays such an interesting and memorable character; I love how they balance her financially-minded pragmatism with the human compassion she feels towards Winthorpe. ("I'm just protecting my investment," she asserts as she nurtures the ailing former snob).

    1. Scarface
In fact, Star 80 might be one you could take a look at for your overlooked series. IMO, Eric Roberts got robbed of a Best Actor nomination. Maybe one of the best onscreen portrayals of an unrepentantly creepy and unstable character ever.

Christine is a movie I fell in love with the first time I saw it as a kid! Classic!
The Outsiders is another…Coppola did another movie in 1983 “Rumble fish”…it’s like a trippy, more violent, vulgar version of The Outsiders. I would include that in my top 10, prob at #6. Also Tom Cruises “all the right moves” is such an underrated gritty independent film from 1983

Mr. Mom, The Outsiders, Christine, National Lampoon's Vacation, and A Christmas Story. As for films I haven't seen from 1983 that I still plan to watch: The King of Comedy and Disney's Something Wicked This Way Comes. Also yes I will watch the dead zone after I maybe read the book.

Dead Zone (film) is very very good definitely 1 of Cronenbergs best films and he’s has an amazing overall ovreau. I’ve read most of Stephen Kings books including dead zone and the film is arguably the best adaption of his fiction. As for reading the book first it is soooo close to the heartbeat of the film that it’s really not needed.

Saw a lot of these movies in the theatre except for vacation, Risky business and scarface because I was too young to see them, they were strict back in the 80’s. Fun fact, although scarface was a Brian de Palma movie, the “say hello to my little friend.” Part was directed by Steven Spielberg because him, Brian de Palma, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola used to visit each other’s sets and direct a scene. I did however get to see Christine in the theatre and in 70mm, it was a great cinematic experience.

Huh. I looked up popular movie of 1983 and was shocked to see that I had only seen a few of them and the ones I had seen arent really favorites. I would put Staying Alive on this list though for me. I'm one of the few people I know who prefer it to Saturday Night Fever. Definitely Sleepaway Camp as well.
I'm utterly shocked you didn't have Jaws 3 on your list. I mean, what a masterpiece that was. I'm sure it was at least number 11. 🤣🤣🤣

While I totally agree with you for the most part, I think filmmakers can actually get away with making good movies that take risks regardless of any social backlash. The problem is it's extremely difficult to get a studio to take the risk and fund a controversial topic of any kind unless it fits into some social awareness agenda they are pushing as a company (simply because the majority of ticket buyers collectively agree on X topic). If it's not marketable they don't want to touch it.

I love that you put Trading Places in there. Such a great flick and you're right, one that doesn't seem to get the love it deserves. What a great kick off to Eddie Murphy's career. A buddy of mine and I also do the "Merry New Year" thing every year. 😂 Psycho II is also a fave of mine and I'm with you, I like it better than the original, which is no small matter! The relationship between Anthony Perkins and Meg Tilly is absolutely fantastic and the writing and directing are both top shelf.
