  • This one goes out to BowlingBallOut who posted a question about a sticky throttle on his Saturn. It was a great question so I decided to make this video in response to it. There are many different configurations of throttle assemblies but for the most part if you have a throttle that is sticking you might be able to fix it using the procedures in this video. I am aware you may not able to purchase spray throttle cleaner in some states now but I'm sure they have some alternative available at your local parts store.
    One very important note here is that if you have a drive by wire throttle (DBW), then I do NOT recommend this procedure. If you perform this procedure on a DBW throttle body you may need to have the throttle reset in order to get your engine to idle or even start. I only recommend this procedure if you're trying to correct a problem with a sticking throttle.
    If you have idle problems, I recommend you check out this article on my website.

    @MrMdezee If someone adjusted the idle screw I would recommend turning it back to where it was originally and then checking for vacuum leaks. If you suspect an IAC problem replace it, I haven't had any luck cleaning them.

    Great videos Eric! My tip to you is to use a toothbrush instead of the rag. They do a great job and looks brand new when your finished. On fly by wire cars, make sure the ignition is off before moving the throttle plate.Also don't forget to use nitrile gloves when working to stop the skin from absorbing grease dirt and chemicals.

    I appreciate very much the advice given in this video, and especially to those commenters who warned about not manually moving the butterfly valve on a drive-by-wire car, like my '03 Accord. I never would have known that could be harmful to it, so a big "thank you" to all who mentioned it!

    HOWDY ERICTHECARGUY...I have a 92 crown vic lx, with 280,000kms on it. had the throttle sticking problem, didn't know what it was causing it to hesitate and even stall on the QE2 in Alberta. Saw your vid, man that throttle was completely covered in thick gunk, cleaned it out like you showed, and it works great now, now I have to change the belt, followed your instructions, another triumph, thanks eh!

    Great job Eric. On my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer, I replaced the MAP due to OBD code. My acceleration increase and overall performance was great. Two days later, I got a P0106 code (MAP performance). Cleaning the throttle body was one of the suggestions. In fact, cleaning the throttle body every 30,000 miles or so helps. I can't remember the last time I did this on my SUV (205,000). So I was looking for a video that shows how to clean the throttle body without removing it (I'm not as young as I used to be :)). Thanks again for a quick and concise video.

  • @nik12937
    @nik12937 10 лет назад +9

    This is especially helpful and even important with newer drive-by-wire throttle bodies. Since they're actuated by a small motor or similar, and tend to be taking the place of idle air control valves and the like, they cause a lot of odd problems when sticking. One problem being stalling only when starting the car warm. The throttle will get stuck closed and starve the engine. It also tends to make throttle response feel even more delayed than most drive-by-wire throttles are from the factory. Great tip Eric!

  • @ericthecarguy

    @tonytiger33 If you don't have a check engine light start with the basics like plugs and a fuel filter. DON'T start replacing sensors as they probably have nothing to do with it. You might also do a power balance test to see if you can find a particular cylinder that is at fault, I've done a video on this if that helps.

    Hi Eric, your videos are awesome! I usually use Seafoam instead of TB cleaner and spray about 1/8 of a can in the intake as well. I leave it for about 10 minutes then start it up and let it run through. I've heard that this can actually plug your catalytic converter. I've also heard that it cleans the catalytic? What's your thought on this?

    it's not really nec. to take the throttle body off. With an old tooth brush and some cleaner you can clean the throttle plate and the area where the throttle plate contacts the body without removal. If you remove it you may be into a gasket replacement or coolant hose leakage (if yours has coolant hoses to it)

I am an old guy who used to take out the carburetor and clean it 50 years ago. I didn't realize that the same type technology was in modern cars. I didn't even have to use a tooth brush to fix the problem. Thanks again.

    Good video, the best product to use to clean out throttle bodies is the ThreeBond Engine Conditioner. Heat the engine to running temp first then turn off the engine and take the hose from the throttle body. Spray the engine conditioner into the throttle body and it will foam up and clean all gummed up areas. It also lubricates the throttle body. Start the engine and spray the rest of the can through and it will clean the complete combustion chamber. It is a complete carbon clean in a can.

    Before asking my question, I would like to thank you for your videos. I have watched them all and I am one of your video fans.
    Can I spray lacquer thinner instead of spray throttle cleaner your mentioned. Lacquer thinners are much cheaper to purchase and I have used them cleaning gummy stuff and works real good. My concern is whether Lacquer thinner can cause and internal problem for the engine or the injectors. Thank you

    • @Sloxx701
      @Sloxx701 8 лет назад +2

      Lacquer thinner will destroy any plastics/polymers as well as lubrication/seals on the throttle body shaft. It could also damage the TPS/IAC or other sensors. I would not use it myself, but if you have no choice I would be very careful with it. And I certainly would not spray it down into the throttle body/intake manifold.

      Raul, before you give this advice, you should consider BMW, and maybe some other brands. If you disconnect the battery, you have to re enter the radio security code before the radio works again. What about the readers of this who don't have their radio code and don't realize they will need it after batt disconnect? You can hook up a temporary 12v supply before you disconnect the battery to save the radio code if you had the knowledge. I wouldn't disconnect battery for most throttle body cleanings.

    I would personally recommend removing the throttle body completely. I remove all electronics (IAC, TPS, etc..) and clean all the passages. The TB cleaner shouldn't damage the sensors and valves (IAC) but if I'm cleaning something I'm doing it 100%.
    Definitely pay attention to removing all the buildup around the edges of the butterfly valve, that's where it will stick the most. And don't use anything abrasive to clean internally, a nylon bristle brush is ok, NO steel wire!!
    Now if you are still having a problem with throttle response then I'd look at the throttle cable. Just like the hood latch cable it's braided wire that will stretch and when it's stretched the butterfly in the TB won't fully open. There are the cheap zip tie tricks, but just replace the cable, not worth a snapped cable at WOT!!

      Really good advice! Thank u so much! My ,2091 dodge neon started stalling a month ago while! Usually after I drove it 15 miles it would stall and stutter a few times, then straiten back out And drove fine! It did that a few weeks then today while I was driving home it just died, while driving down the road, and won't start back now! It cranks but won't start! And I listened at the gas tank to see if the fuel pump kicks in when my friend turned the key over, the fuel pump came on and makes a whining noise! Do u no what can cause my car to stutter then die and not start back! Thank u so very much 😊😊

      Sorry it's a 2001 dodge neon, and if it's the fuel filter can that be changed without changing the fuel pump! I heard the fuel filter was made in the pump and have to change the whole fuel pump! Thank u so much

      Becky Justice Do you run your tank below 1/4 full often? More than likely your fuel pump is done for but you can try a filter first.

      Thank u so much Tanner! I kinda had a feeling it might be the fuel pump! I went out the next morning and it started right up like nothing was ever wrong with it! But still has the stalling after driving 15 miles and still wants to quit when I come to a stop on inclines! And when I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump kicks on for a few seconds! Thank u so much for all your help Tanner! I really appreciate it

    to clean you can use throttle body & air intake cleaner (stp) or mass air flow sensor cleaner auto zone

  • @Rampage4reel
    @Rampage4reel 8 лет назад

    Eric you are right on everything I've seen of yours but I would do this different. I use CRC products whenever I can. If you ever see what happens when throttle body cleaner does to plastic when they come in contact with each other the plastic will crack. Most intake manifolds are plastic. I've always just taken the tb off cleaned it and covered tps sensor and actuator motor so that they don't get wet.

    Great tip on "clear flood mode" ! It is amazing how many people do NOT know this tip !!
    I think you meant to say not to clean INSIDE Ford throttle bodies, meaning past the throttle plates. Scanner Danner and I have a difference of opinion on this, and you and I are on the same side !
    I always clean all external linkages and pivot points

      What's drive by wire?

    • @MrWesker00
      @MrWesker00 9 лет назад

      AgentJucey Electronic throttle bodies. They usually have a module and/or driven by gears electronically. DO NOT MANUALLY OPEN THEM! They will mess up. Ask me how I know!

    • @dennisjohnson2726
      @dennisjohnson2726 9 лет назад +4

      AgentJucey Drive by wire means there is no mechanical connection from the accelerator to the throttle body. It's done by electronics through your wiring harness, thus drive by wire. It's been used by commercial airliners for many years and is a proven technology.

    Hello Eric, I have a 96 Saturn SL2 with a P0401 "EGR insufficient flow" trouble code that I can't get rid of. I bought new EGR valve and then I sprayed the two passages below the EGR valve with throttle body cleaner also. I also tried starting the engine a few times with the EGR valve removed. I tried shoving a coat hanger in there, did not get too far as it is too stiff but then I was able to shove a Ziptie in there for a good 12 inches. I reset the PCMB and cleared the code but the P0401 code comes back after driving 35 miles. Is there any other place I need to clean out on the Saturn engine to fix the flow restriction? By the way, every time I clear the code by removing the PCMB fuse for a few minutes, the check engine light (CEL) will come back on the next day at exactly 35 miles on my drive home.

    Opening the throttle manually on some cars, especially those with Drive by wire can cause them to lose the idle settings.
    its best to remove the throttle and spray from both sides without moving the plate.

    I just used rubbing alcohol and Air Flow Sensor cleaner. And some Q-tips and paper towels. It's best to do it when you don't have to drive anywhere afterward that day. So do it at the end of the day and let your car sit overnight before starting so the chemicals can evaporate and throttle can air dry overnight. Otherwise you'll take a chance of trouble starting and/or the chemicals flowing your exhaust.

    On some cars, there is a placard that says DO NOT CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY. I wondered this and my Acura manual says it is because the molybdenum coating on the throttle shaft may be removed by applying throttle cleaner. So the manual says to use a rag dipped in solvent/cleaner and clean the throttle body but avoid cleaning the both ends of the shaft.
    I remove the throttle body for cleaning, but the nuisance is that I need to have a new gasket ready.
