Thanks for watching and your comment. I’d love to do the virtual cockpit but I’ll likely be change car this year. So not more upgrades to my golf. I’m not 100% but I thought the 2.5 was needed to pass the higher resolution of the 9” display but I could be totally wrong there. If not then a display and trim should work but the display needs an MIB from a certain year onwards else you get these vertical pixel lines running up the display. Which leans on my first thought about it needing 2.5 and 2 might not cut it. Best to ask in a forum or google that one. Good luck.
I think it’s normal when you’re coming from an old setup like mine. Mine is a 2014 mk7 which came with a 5” discover nav pro screen before I swapped it for an alpine. So it still had older legacy connectors which they must have changed over time as the systems evolved. It’s a good job only two pins need shaving down and nothing else. Otherwise you’ll have to look at converting cables instead. If they exist.
I’m not 100% sure. I thought during my research that the 9.2” needs more power from the MIB and the 2.5 gives this extra oomph to power the higher resolution. I could be wrong. Scan some forums to see if anyone has done it as I might be totally wrong.
Amazing install video! I just ordered a MIB2.5 9.2" retrofit kit that also includes the updated cables for the USB and display so I will not have to mess around with the older connectors. BTW do you use a vent mount for your phone or how do you prevent the phone from overheating while using CarPlay or Android Auto and charging? I guess that mounting the phone horizontally on the vent would keep the phone cool with the AC while not blocking the 9.2" display. The iOttie Auto Sense 2 wireless charging mount looks nice.
Congrats on your pending install. You’ll gonna love the upgrade ☺️ I still use the Koopao Shock Absorbing mount (my review of it here ruclips.net/video/R84jN7LedN0/видео.htmlsi=sb2eiKnYNaM9Sgfj). I prefer a more discrete MagSafe mount. It’s been a great mount and I’ve never had an overheated iPhone and I also use it in a case. Thanks for watching.
@@CarPlayLife update: I managed to get the upgrade installed. Overall it's working great with Android Auto and Carplay (I also got the MSXTTLY wireless adapter and works flawlessly). Only issues im currently having are: 1. AM radio is not showing up, I guess I need to do some VCDS coding to get that enabled at 5F system, byte 14 2. When park pilot is activated, it's expecting a rear view camera that my car doesn't have, so it shows the sensors correctly, but with a large black space in where the camera feed should show, I guess that also needs a little coding to tell the media system there is no rearview camera. 3. My unit has LTE, but even when setting the right APN settings, I don't get it to register in the network. I do not really need this feature but it would be great if worked so I can make a hotspot for my passengers. Maybe the unit doesn't support my local LTE bands, or as it's a second hand unit the IMEI might be banned. I will later look up for codes with VCDS 4. Even though it has Global maps installed, VW doesn't offer maps for my country Uruguay, it shows maps for my neighbor countries Argentina and Brazil though, nothing to do about this unless VW decides to sell maps SD cards for my country. Anyways I will use Waze or Google Maps with Android Auto or Carplay.
This unit does not need SD cards. The screen only partial in rear shift can become full by touching the screen. But to get rid of this you should install the reverse camera.
Yes it did. Or as far as I know it has. Installing the alpine and Dasaita before it. I know all these systems are already with the car and the head unit just displays them. So the MIB picked up on all this data and displays it accordingly through its stock interface. Which is so much nicer than alpine and Dasaita.
I recently bought myself a VW Golf 7 GTE. It’s a GTE from the year 2014 so it’s a bit old. At the moment I am using the radio it came with stock and I would like to upgrade it. Luckily i found your video but I was wondering if the radio you’ve used is universal for all the MK7 Golfs. I know that some features the GTE has is exclusively made for the GTE, so will I be missing some features by buying this radio?
I’m not 100% but if you get the right main unit that has CP removed and is unlocked it should carry over all the features for a GTE. Perfect scenario is to have a main unit out of a GTE and add the 9.5” screen.
Hi, was the unit bought from a golf? Just wondered how the golf picture comes up on the display? Looking to do something similar with a T6.1 transporter
I got it off eBay so I guess I lucked out there as it must have came out of a golf. I think with some fancy coding you can alter it to anything you like but that’s out of my scope and knowledge, sorry.
It’s a simple task of pulling out the air vent section and feeding a long enough cable through the air vent blades, down through a foam hole section in the centre of the dash that’s behind the vent and then down the back of the display section and through a hole into where the USB port compartment is, then I feed that out one of the side holes that the side panel cover in the footwell and feed it along the top edge of that side panel and out the end of it so it can be inserted into a USB 12v adapter. I made sure it’s a USB C to C cable for fast power and data transfer so I don’t have to replace it for anything bitter. Hope this helps.
I had the 9" Alpine X902D-G7 in 2018 when it came out. Great unit. I see it's no longer available. Not sure i'd have one again though due to cost. Might just get a carplay module via oem.
Hi, Did u ever get carnet working. Also does your unit connect to your phones hotspot. I had this fitted to upgrade fron MIB 1 in wifeys 2014 golf mk7 and all the Internet stuff doesn't work. We dont need it but was curious if yours works. I also have the mib pro in my 2019 Tiguan from factory which complements the Digital dash perfectly.
No I’ve never had the time to try it properly. But when I tapped it, it didn’t do anything. Yet to try hot spotting also from it. Didn’t know it could 🤔
@@CarPlayLifegreat video - I have a 2017 MK7.5 with the 8” screen. Is the 9.2” unit the same size, and can use my existing trim. The part numbers the same but is rev F instead of G. Cheers.
Hey I just bought a 2015 Golf R. The original owner chose the upgraded discover nav when he bought it thank god. But CarPlay hasn’t been activated which I believe only a dealer can activate for around £200. However I was thinking of upgrading to the glass screen with volume knob or the 9.2 and putting the money towards that. My question is do the steering wheel controls work with CarPlay afterwards? And also this didn’t require any coding at all?! Thanks.
CarPlay does work with wheel controls. I don’t think wheel controls need coding at all. My MIB2.5 was code removed so it was plug and play and didn’t need any coding. Everything was unlocked.
@@CarPlayLife Nice one, thanks. Now I need to confirm I have a MIB2 unit and then I can just plug in a 8" unlocked screen and should be good to go? Or would I need to pay the dealer to activate CP?
I don't think the screen has any protection, so that should be plug-and-play. If it is an HD screen you're getting, make sure it is newer than H51 otherwise you get pixel lines down the display
This might be 9" specific, it isn't a part number , it is a 'hardware' nunber. It is written on the back label, right side of the label, H plus 2 digits.
So ... I have had this strange experience the last couple of months. After updating the map on my Discover Pro unit for a Golf MK7 2014 model, everything has gone really slow. The car, nav and phone context are now using 2-3 minutes to start, while the media context doesn't start at all (the later means that you for instance can't play music from the mobile phone. Calling from the phone works though). When reading error codes from the car, it says among other errors that the navigation db is missing/corrupt. Well, long story short ... Is it possible to reinstall the operating system and everything on the Discover Pro PC? I called a dealer that said they had no such options. The only thing they could really help me with was to update the unit with a newer firmware version and/or reset the unit to fabric configuration. I already have the latest firmware version, and I've already tried to reset the unit to fabric configuration. It seems really meaningless to change the whole unit because of a problem that I consider to be software related?
You’d think it should be able to rollback to a first start state. Could you not reflash the latest firmware to get into this state? Isn’t nav DB on an inserted SD card or is that just the maps data? Maybe coding is an option also 🤔
@@CarPlayLife : Hi, and thank you for your answer. I think the NAV update got stuck in some faulty state because the unit was turned off in the mid of the update. Unlucky, because I've been updating the car once a year for ten years now. Got a few error messages, but after trying to get the update in a few more times, it ran through without any noticeable further problems. I would love to flash my unit with the latest firmware (not the NAV update, but the actual firmware on the box), but the VW dealer says they only have the opportunity to reset the unit to fabric configuration (as I've already done), or they could do a firmware upgrade ... but not a firmware install. At least that was what I was told. I don't have access to the firmware on any install media myself, so I am unable to confirm that. It just seems very strange that you should be unable to just reinstall the software on the unit. What did you think of when you mentioned "coding"?
Maybe they don’t want to do a firmware override as it’s policy of theirs. So maybe you have to wait until the next firmware update comes around. A power off during update will certainly cause this to happen. 😔 As for coding, it’s where you go via the ODB2 socket with an adapter and through software you can possibly check errors, clear them and also make adjustments etc. maybe via this way you could work around any issues that the system is coming up with. I’ve yet to dive into the coding realm myself. I bought one in case I had to do something with my mib2.5 install but I never had to do anything.
Tried this yesterday with ODBeleven and it didn’t work for me and my mib2.5 harman. 🤔 I already had most of what this guy said to turn on enabled apart from the last Apple one. Turned this on successfully but connecting BT doesn’t follow through to wireless CarPlay. If it’s meant to maybe I’m running older software. But scared to update in case it brakes the copy protection etc.
I don't think I did. I thought that info only came with the R or mk7.5 models? Mine is a mk7 '13 so the system and connections it came with were ancient. I was lucky to even do this mod successfully, haha. Just found out how to view this. So I'll check later this morning.
Ok I just had time to check this. Performance dials are there. But for some reason oil temp and engine temp are not displaying anything. G metre and PSI works, as does the lap timer screen.
That's a reason I kept my OEM headunit and add on dash 10.26" carplay witch works wireless with android and iPhone to do the rearview cam and map simple to connect and cost less than £100..the sound connect to headunit and phone by Bluetooth and can mirror the phone to watch video or anything else don't waste ur money and mess with OEM unit..
I get what you're saying about different volumes but android (well samsung flagships) you can adjust individually all volumes from all sources. IPhones are so locked down. Anyway not here to bash iPhones im interested in what you're talking about. How rubbish the alpine doesn't do wireless AA Car play. I've had a kenwood flagship DMX9720XDS think Europe/UK get the same model USA is different but that's 2020 and has wireless carplay so the fact the final edition 2020. Golf r doesn't even have wireless android auto and stuff is pretty lame cos they totally could have done it. I'm just going to go a dongle now and keep radio stock I do have mib 2.5 I think
I think it’s because hardware specs are locked down years before the car model rolls out the factory, and tech moves so fast these days, that by the time a car releases tech has moved on with new features such as wireless CarPlay by then and the spec feels dated. It took years for wired CarPlay to become a default standard these days in stock car systems, yet it came out in 2014. We’re seeing it again with wireless CarPlay. Only cars releasing in the last 1-2 years have wireless CarPlay as standard at their base level spec.
I might be wrong but I think the discover pro just comes with nav and maps. Maybe DAB and updated HD display. Not 100% Edit. This might help www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/technology/radio-and-navigation/discover-nav.html
I think (but not 100%) that you need at least a 2.0-2.5 system for the 9.2” screen because it needs the power behind the MIB box to power the higher resolution screen. Otherwise I read you’ll get these vertical pixel lines
You would have to check the Hardware version number on the MIB2 unit (written on the top of the unit). If it’s lower than H52 then a 9” high definition display will display vertical pixel lines. I’m not sure if a 2.5 is needed either, at least with your setup you will have more plug and play. Likely not need to shave connection pins. You could get the display and just connect it up and see and then if not then you know you need to update the MIB unit. Sorry I’m not all that clued up on compatibility between MIBs and the different displays.
hello, I installed a discover pro 2.5 screen, my screen remains black. it doesn't display anything. I had a MiB 1 and a discover media 1. what should I change to solve my problem, thanks
I assume you mean MIB 2.5 and not the display screen size? That would be rather small☺️. Make sure the power and data display cable is connected correctly from MIB and also to display. It will likely need some side plastic ridges of the connected shaved off for it to fit right. If that doesn’t work then it could be a fault with the display or MIB, its connections or that the display is older than v52 and cannot display the content from the MIB. Beyond this, I wouldn’t know what else to suggest and needs more of an expert.
I considered it but pulling out what is quite an important part of the car, including the wheel I hear has to come off to, I didn’t want to mess with that. I know it is possible, but I’ll likely be selling the car on before doing such an install.
I did that and works very well it has transformed my daily experience in the cockpit. But iam reluctant to invest money in doing this modification showed here over the discover with the 8 inch screen with physical buttons. For example I can turnoff my car and still change the volume of the speakers not sure you can do that in this one with the ignition off.
Hi, I have a 2019 Mk 7.5 Golf which has the MIB 2.0 I believe. If I wanted to go for the MIB 2.5 screen would I need the VW main unit or would I get away with the new discover pro 2.5 display and the surround trim dash panel fascia? Thanks Paul
I ‘think’ you might be able to get away with just the display. Worst case you can get the display anyway and see if it works out ok before getting a MIB2.5 if that is even needed.
@@CarPlayLifethanks for the quick reply. Thinking about it logically what would I really benefit from by going from 2.0 to 2.5 other than the larger screen size? I just watched your comparison on wireless car-play dongles (top choice no longer available on Amazon UK) I might consider your second choice. one advantage of using the usb wired connection for car-play is it charges your phone while driving I suppose.
Top wireless adapter has been rebooted with just different colours. Inside the hardware is the same. If you have a wireless charger you can clean up the interior full of cables. As for the 2.0 va 2.5 MIB: “MIB 2.5 is an updated version of the MIB 2.0 system, offering improvements in performance, graphics, and additional features. It may have faster processing speeds, enhanced graphics capabilities, and possibly more advanced features depending on the specific model and trim level of the vehicle. Overall, MIB 2.5 represents an evolution and improvement over the earlier MIB 2.0 system, offering a more advanced and refined user experience.” I’m not 100% sure whether the 2.5 hardware is needed to drive the 9” display resolution or at least more smoothly.
Hello, I upgraded a few months ago from composition media to discovery pro mib 2.5, identical to the one in the video, in a golf 7 previously I had no functionality such as GPS or DAB/DAB+, and therefore no antenna previously installed, the radio currently works but the functions such as GPS and DAB do not, furthermore the navigation section also negatively affects my use of android auto, changing my position with the one it has in memory, I have also tried to install antennas bought on ebay, but the GPS one works badly, and the DAB one does not work at all, what can I do to install the antennas and make everything work? do you have any advice on components to buy? also original antenna if it is possibile thank you all
Congrats on the install. Sorry to hear your problems though. Honestly, all what you're facing is out of my knowledge. I was lucky to have all dab and gps still there from the old system and to put in new ones would be an area outside my comfort zone. What I would do if in your position is try to buy official gps and dab antennas and don’t scrimp on third party ones or fake knockoffs. Google where these antennas are installed and replicate their position. My Dasaita dab was terrible and so was its FM antenna. So I would go the official route with help on where to put them so it matches stock.
For the technicians in the comments, I have a 2015 base model with the smallest screen option, but I have the aux/usb ports and not MMI. Is it safe to assume I have MIB 2? I'll be doing the full upgrade to 2.5 anyway, will I need a new usb port or no?
I thought MIB2 had wired CarPlay, early models might have had the option switched off by the manufacturer. But if you have CarPlay on this system already, then yes it’s likely you have MIB2 and the aux/usb should be fine for the upgrade to 2.5
@@CarPlayLife it's the 5.8 inch screen from the MIB1 system so no carplay/Android auto or nav (at least not available in any menus) but I can play music off USBs. I'm ordering the MIB 2.5 kit through VW Central and they offer the usb port for free so I might get it anyway and see how it goes.
I just replaced my screen for my Golf mk7 GTD 2015 from a Mib1 screen to a discovery pro screen but i noticed that the quality of my audio has decreased can someone help me out on a fix?
Just the screen or the whole MIB unit? The screen shouldn’t make any difference to the audio unless you’ve not plugged any cables in fully or disconnected something during the install.
Ok so it sounds like you didn’t carry out the install? If not then I would take it back to the people that did the install and ask them about this issue. Before you do though.
You’ll gonna love the upgrade ☺️
I still use the Koopao Shock Absorbing mount (my review of it here ruclips.net/video/R84jN7LedN0/видео.htmlsi=sb2eiKnYNaM9Sgfj).
Only issues im currently having are:
1. AM radio is not showing up, I guess I need to do some VCDS coding to get that enabled at 5F system, byte 14
I will later look up for codes with VCDS
Do u have a video on installing the usb power cable for phone charging?
Do you mean the one that I’ve put through the air vent or installing the usb and aux cable in the centre console?
@@CarPlayLife air vent
Just found it in another video thank you so much
Curious were the Android head units able to do car controls that are done via the MIB system? Things like DCC settings, etc.
Yes it did via a supplied CANBUS adapter but is was presented in an ugly list menu. 😔
Thank you for this video! After you got mib2.5, did you made any coding in it?
You’re welcome. No not yet, I have just bought a ODBEleven adapter so I’ll be checking out what coding can be done, if any. :)
@@CarPlayLife did new media find all car systems? Assistants, car setup, mirrors, climatic, fuel spend?
Hey @@CarPlayLife , really need this information
Yes it did. Or as far as I know it has. Installing the alpine and Dasaita before it. I know all these systems are already with the car and the head unit just displays them. So the MIB picked up on all this data and displays it accordingly through its stock interface. Which is so much nicer than alpine and Dasaita.
What about LTE antenna to have working sim slot, was your car equipped with an antenna from the factory or did I buy something other?
My mib1 never had this so I think this doesn’t work. I tried to car net and not much came up.
@@CarPlayLife Thank you so much for the quick response. You’ve got yourself another subscriber 😁👍
I think you can change the picture with OBDeleven
I am very keen to know how you wired in your power supply cable through your air vent?
It’s a simple task of pulling out the air vent section and feeding a long enough cable through the air vent blades, down through a foam hole section in the centre of the dash that’s behind the vent and then down the back of the display section and through a hole into where the USB port compartment is, then I feed that out one of the side holes that the side panel cover in the footwell and feed it along the top edge of that side panel and out the end of it so it can be inserted into a USB 12v adapter. I made sure it’s a USB C to C cable for fast power and data transfer so I don’t have to replace it for anything bitter.
Hope this helps.
@@CarPlayLife Thanks find your channel really interesting keep up the good work😀
Thank you 🙏🏻
I had the 9" Alpine X902D-G7 in 2018 when it came out. Great unit. I see it's no longer available. Not sure i'd have one again though due to cost. Might just get a carplay module via oem.
That’s what I’d do
@@CarPlayLife I notice you can do Carplay via SD card and some files now. No dongle needed if not needing wireless. Around £28
I think that is for unlocking app connect on systems that have the hardware for CarPlay but it is locked away.
Didn’t know it could 🤔
Is there a facia that matches the stock trim? the gloss black against the grey patterned trim throws me off.
I wish there was. Since having the alpine fitted I’ve had to live with a gloss black trim again end the carbon fibre effect trim alongside it.
@@CarPlayLife It's the 8" screen with volume knob etc. Is H51 in the part number?
As for coding, it’s where you go via the ODB2 socket with an adapter and through software you can possibly check errors, clear them and also make adjustments etc. maybe via this way you could work around any issues that the system is coming up with. I’ve yet to dive into the coding realm myself. I bought one in case I had to do something with my mib2.5 install but I never had to do anything.
You can code this radio for wireless carplay without any modules with OBDELEVEN or VCDS
Woah! That is some magical voodoo talk right there. It can’t be. Time to Google unless you can point us in the right direction?
ruclips.net/video/yVirrOxBLko/видео.htmlsi=REdkyysYT-m74Shu
Tried this yesterday with ODBeleven and it didn’t work for me and my mib2.5 harman. 🤔 I already had most of what this guy said to turn on enabled apart from the last Apple one. Turned this on successfully but connecting BT doesn’t follow through to wireless CarPlay.
If it’s meant to maybe I’m running older software. But scared to update in case it brakes the copy protection etc.
@@CarPlayLife I think I still need to adjust it in the engineering menu
I will search for you
Great video, did you get the performance dials , like boost and kw ?
Nice! 👍🏻
Could you link this mate
He means one of these displays ruclips.net/p/PLysOHeJ5BkMjtEOXRVeCE3fruLXqmPr9B&si=TDr8tyTqJqBT9Kvj
Hi mate can I fit this in my mk6 tsi 1.4L 2012
I don’t think it’s possible on a Mk6 Golf. More so the stock cables you need might not be there on a mk6
Hi mate. Do you have original number for this screen? I want it for my golf gte 7.5.
Sure it’s 5G6 919 606. Hardware no. H61. Make sure the Hardware number is higher than H51.
what is the differnece between pdiscover pro and regular one? the one included in style
I might be wrong but I think the discover pro just comes with nav and maps. Maybe DAB and updated HD display. Not 100%
Edit. This might help www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/technology/radio-and-navigation/discover-nav.html
do you have to buy the fascia part with it
If you’re also fitting the new screen then yes, because it’s a lot different to the it’s likely replacing.
@@CarPlayLife so basically you will only need the 9.2 screen and fascia part to install it
Yes if you already have the MIB2.5 system pre-installed
@@CarPlayLife is it possible to get just the screen and code in the apple car play without the mib2.5
I think (but not 100%) that you need at least a 2.0-2.5 system for the 9.2” screen because it needs the power behind the MIB box to power the higher resolution screen.
Otherwise I read you’ll get these vertical pixel lines
Is it possible to upgrade the dashboard to an original digital one that works OEM with the new parts installed ?
Apparently you can. There’s some people in the UK that does this retrofit. Some coding required I think.
If you have MIB2 unit can you just upgrade the display only or does the unit need to changed as well@@CarPlayLife
Hi Where did you get the glovebox unit from please ?
It was off eBay. Keep an eye out for code removed/unlocked units
hello, I installed a discover pro 2.5 screen, my screen remains black. it doesn't display anything.
Do you plan on doing the virtual cockpit ?
Thanks
Paul
I ‘think’ you might be able to get away with just the display. Worst case you can get the display anyway and see if it works out ok before getting a MIB2.5 if that is even needed.
Just noticed further down the posts someone has already asked the same question 👍
As for the 2.0 va 2.5 MIB:
“MIB 2.5 is an updated version of the MIB 2.0 system, offering improvements in performance, graphics, and additional features. It may have faster processing speeds, enhanced graphics capabilities, and possibly more advanced features depending on the specific model and trim level of the vehicle.
Overall, MIB 2.5 represents an evolution and improvement over the earlier MIB 2.0 system, offering a more advanced and refined user experience.”
I’m not 100% sure whether the 2.5 hardware is needed to drive the 9” display resolution or at least more smoothly.
Hello,
I upgraded a few months ago from composition media to discovery pro mib 2.5, identical to the one in the video, in a golf 7 previously I had no functionality such as GPS or DAB/DAB+, and therefore no antenna previously installed, the radio currently works but the functions such as GPS and DAB do not, furthermore the navigation section also negatively affects my use of android auto, changing my position with the one it has in memory, I have also tried to install antennas bought on ebay, but the GPS one works badly, and the DAB one does not work at all, what can I do to install the antennas and make everything work? do you have any advice on components to buy? also original antenna if it is possibile
thank you all
Congrats on the install.
@@CarPlayLife thank you😁
For the technicians in the comments, I have a 2015 base model with the smallest screen option, but I have the aux/usb ports and not MMI.
Nicely done 👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
@@CarPlayLife I think both because there was a box installed in the glovebox that has also been replaced.
Ok so it sounds like you didn’t carry out the install? If not then I would take it back to the people that did the install and ask them about this issue.
Before you do though. Did you try playing with the equaliser settings as they would have reset, and sound different to what the original was set up. Do that before talking to the installers.
@@CarPlayLife yeah someone else did the install but i tried everything with the EQ did not change. Ive just messaged him he says that i have to change the sound from 4 to 8 with a vcds.

No the MIB2.5 is wired only. You’ll need a wireless USB adapter to make it wireless
I have a 2016 MK7 Golf, will the 9inch fit. I heard you said MK7 Golf as well for yours.
Yes it will. Mine is a 2014 Mk7. You will also need a new screen facia/frame that will accommodate the bigger display
