you should do this "grain action" on a 50% gray layer (soft light) --> you save hard disk space and your image will not get the 0.5 blurriness. And then you should work with a "blend if" layer style, so you can have more grain in the shadows and not so much in the highlights
I use the same technique. It adds texture and somehow masks the areas where we smoothen the skin, making them look natural. Been using this both for commercial and personal work. Glad to know I am in the right path. ☺️
