  • We head up to Wisconsin to rendezvous with Dan Becker & co. to do some LEGIT winter backpacking. Even though temperatures were fairly mild, for Wisconsin standards, we trudged through 20 degree temps, and a few feet of snow. The conditions really turned this place into a winter wonderland.
Our route took us along the famous Ice Age Trail, and through the Kettle-Moraine State Forest (Northern Unit). We spend two nights on the ice age trail, tenting and hammock-camping along the way, having blazing fires, and enjoying the companionship of several other RUclipsrs.
It was fantastic to finally get a fully-fledged winter backpacking trip in the snowy woods of Wisconsin. Wisconsin really is a magical place (including all the cheese curds and craft beer!)

I enjoy your content, but I think what I appreciated with this trip (along with others) and your BS-ing videos/podcasts is how you two show how awesome the backpacking community is! As RUclips creators you all show how awesome it is to get out with different people and you can have a good time no matter the trip. Even a different one like this one (It's amazing that Wisconsin sells different Mountain House meals along the Ice Age trail like that 😆).
You two have become like the common thread to a lot of other content and channels. Thank you for that!

Very fun Video. I will be through Hiking the Ice Age Trail with my Service Dog starting May 1st. I had my fun camping in the wintertime when I was in the Army up in Alaska. Where we trained a lot in the winter and temps would drop into the -50. We would sleep outside with just sleeping bags and a foam mat when it would warm up to 0 to 10 degrees.

Great video! I am not a fan of snow but it would be nice to get at least one snow storm a year in SE Ohio again. All we got this year was a couple dusting.
Wondering if Restless is going to make a video Becker shaming you all? Curious since your picture was already scratched out.

I spent two weeks in Wausau over January & February, lots of snow, & so cold (for me!) Worth every bit of it to finally have some Spotted Cow on tap!!! Brought back 4 1/2 cases. It’s been one of my favorite beers for a long time!

Hey Kevin, do you feel that the x-therm is a better pad at winter temps than the tensor? I have the same tensor version that you have and took to 20f on bare frozen ground. I was toasty and think I could take it much lower before I would be cold due to the pad. I really enjoy and appreciate the work you guys put into the channel.

I'm sure it was a nice trip, but that section of the IAT is only really good for day hikes...way too busy. If you want to enjoy the IAT you need to head up north west of there. You can hit decent stretches of remote trail.

Oh my god, I was with you until I saw that tortilla sitting directly on the shelter bench... DO NOT eat off those benches. I live in the area and these shelters are infested with mice. Idk if they're there in the winter, but I know in summer you can catch a disease from breathing in the dust in the shelters. Just be careful, try not to kick up too much dust in backpacking shelters and treat the benches as if mice were just on it. FYI Mice dont pee like you and I, they are always expelling some, they leave a trail wherever they walk.
