The perfect video for someone who is about to buy their first router Alex. And thank you for the table shout out. My favourite router would not be the Makita that I have but actually the Dewalt that you have,.
That Makita trim you've got m8 is a cracking little bit kit seen it up close in action recently looks wicked
Thanks Mark - I have to admit I’m in love with the DeWalt, it’s become my favourite tool within a week and it’s super simple to use.
True. It is good. But in do think the dewalt is more user friendly. @@michaelwillson6847
It's interesting hearing you pronounce "router" the (quasi-)american way your British accent... As when I was living there, I remember people saying it different... I needed to google it for confirmation!
Nice vid btw, thanks for sharing!
Really? It’s how I’ve always pronounced it, how odd! Haha thanks for the kind words :)
I just got my first router second-hand, without any instructions and need to learn to use it, so thank you.
No problem - I hope it has enough information to get you started. Be safe and remember to always respect the tool!
@@Greyotterstudio Can I send questions if needed? I think mastering the router will be more complex than my other tools. I just wish RUclips had been around when I bought my first house 35 years ago. I'm retired now, and rehabilitating my second house.
@@juleeleison2686 You're welcome to ask away although I must stress i'm neither an expert nor an instructor, but I may be able to offer some unofficial guidance from my own experience.
Really nice router ‘101’ guide. There are loads of videos showing routers in use but this one really covers the terminology and basic functions which just aren’t explained elsewhere. Good job.
I’ve got a trim router, which I used a dovetail bit in to cut a grid into a long straight board. With a couple of dovetail clamps to fit into the newly created slots, I now have the perfect straight edge jig for my table saw, regardless of the size or shape of the wood.
Couldn’t have done it without the router.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! That’s a brilliant idea for the straight edge jig - hadn’t thought of that!
Nice job m8 that was a proper informative video. Must say routers scare shit out me. I have a cheap supermarket branded one and haven't used it very much mainly because they scare shit out me. The DeWalt trim is probably next tool on my shopping list. Weather I can afford get it as the plunge and trim kit remains be seen but the DeWalt trim or Makita trim I think are both great although will check out the options you've added in description👍🏴
My big 1/2” one scares me but I have to admit I feel quite comfortable with the Dewalt and with the plunge attachment it’s just as versatile! Thanks for the comment pal, hope you’re doing well.
@@Greyotterstudio doing good mate busy and dreading next week as kids come off on holiday up here after Monday for 7 weeks so that's gonna be fun 😬😬. Must say just looked at the Rutlands 1/4 inch one with the attachments it looks like a decent bit of kit with plenty options for the price. May have to look into that one. 🏴👍
Nicely balanced view. I use a Triton 1/2" Bench Mounted with a fence ( all home made, see small barn workshop ) for general work, it feels a lot safer that way, adjustments are easily made, and a lot less mistakes. Plus a Katsu 1/4" Trim Router for almost everything else. I got both bases and it works really well, at a very good price. I wish I had got a battery one, but at the time they were unaffordable. I use guide rail attachments for both of them as well, which certainly helps with long cuts like doors. I also made a jig for cutting loose tenons, which is very good. They certainly both scare the hell out of me, but that means they get treated with respect. Amateur DIY user
I’ll have to check out small barn workshop! Not heard of them being used to cut out loose tenons before I’ll have to have a look, thanks for sharing!
You learn something new everyday, I always thought a router was a device you use to connect to the internet!! Only kidding, excellent video on buying your first router 👍
Haha to be fair when I was first looking for a second hand one a while back and typed in “router” on FB Marketplace all I got where internet connectors! 😂
Super useful video! You can get some awesome router stencils for design work now too! No need for chaotic freehand! 😂
That’s very true! Although you can create your own stencils too if you’re looking for something custom!
