      This is one of my biggest annoyances of the series. When it aired back in the 20th century I was so eager to see what they would do with it, but...nothing. It's like a giant Chekhov's gun they planted that never went off.

      If I was to guess, I'd assume she's more an anti-Q than anything. She's aware when time chicanery goes on around her, she's incredibly long lived, she has had multiple interactions with the continuum, Q claims she's a trouble maker and she has no fear of Q's powers. She must be capable of undoing what he does, directly or indirectly.

      Doesn't Q exist outside of time, much like the wormhole aliens in DS9? Thus he can see, and even interact both forward and backwards, At least that is the read I got from the final episode where Picard was going backward and forward in time, and Q was with him at the moment that life was supposed to begin on Earth, ad then didn't.
      So yeah, he likely saw what was in store for Picard.

      @@nunya3163 Q is a being of pure thought. He doesn't exist outside of time, but more he exists where ever he wants to be, where ever he thinks to be. There have been a few episodes of Voyager that have brought up the subject of Q and the Q Continuum, as well as a few novels that I personally would like to believe is canon.

      What you earn too cheaply you esteem too lightly. Nothing worthwhile is easy.
      I cannot think of anything that would make Picard, his crew and their mission any more worthless than having an omnipotent chaperone ready to snap his fingers and make all their problems go away.
      They are out there to learn - the hard way. To learn to grow and to grow is to suffer and grow stronger for it.
      After all thats essentially the entire point of this episode. What Q lectures Picard about at the end is what Picard is willing to accept here: a bloody nose, but one they receive on their own terms under their own effort. Not because of Qs powers.

      @@bluehealer81 He didnt say that really though. He merely stated they are ready to encounter it. And they are. They have mastered interstellar travel and have a mission to seek out new life. Those are the only measurements in ignorance they can judge themselves by.
      I look at it more as boldy accepting the risks rather than arrogantly dismissing the threat.

      Q gave them a heads up in regards to the existence of the Borg and that made the federation prepared for their invasion.

      Not just to prove a point. Q wanted humanity to be prepared, because the Borg were already working their way to the alpha quadrant. Without that encounter, humanity would've been absolutely destroyed when they finally arrived.

      This was Q being a good guy. He's being a fourth-dimensional hyper-jerk who lies about everything (except for becoming mortal that one time) and doesn't want anyone to see anything beyond his smarmy exterior but Q sees enough promise in humanity that he doesn't want it extinguished by the Borg.

It's way more fascinating to learn how this character approaches different situations, how he thinks, and his unique strengths compared to the rest of the crew.

    I think Guina would have been a cosmic creature, and in this scene it is very evident. They seem to have done some retcon later.

      I still think the writers could pay homage to this later in Picard. Guinan could be Guinan and also host to something similar in scope to how trills are. Some cosmic entity. Maybe the Nexus from generations itself is sentient, and the guinan from "Generations" foward is but a Nexus powered construct made from her memories, which would explain how she still exists in both places.

      I always had the notion that Guinan actually used to be a Q herself. One who left the Continuum for whatever reason and left her in not so good standing with our Q. The way he says he'll renounce his powers while giving her that very pointed glance and got me thinking that was a possibility. It's a shame that with TNG's episodic structure the idea of her and Q's history never was touched on again.

      @@coleslade Equally good idea. Guinan's species isn't really explored in depth . The only thing we know about them it's a throwaway line about the Borg assimilating them. People take that as a sign that they are relatively weak, but for all we know their corporal forms may just be simply be manifested for our benefit. There existence maybe have simply been an experiment that lived past its use. The borg may have received nothing but biological husks for their efforts. Interfering with lower life forms in any way even to save themselves might be considered a violation of their own idea of the prime directive. Perhaps they were once more malevolent than even the q, and now operate under a vow of non interference to balance out their prior misdeeds. I am not a trek nerd, however it seems like there is a lot of room to retcon everything so it makes sense.

    Was Q trying to help? If he can go wherever he wants in time and space, he knew what would happen to Picard and Enterprise when meet the borg. So, if he was trying to help he would change the timeline, history, don't you agree? Anyway, how would he help about the borg, if Picard had accepted hin as a crew member, if he would renounce to his powers?

      I think Q was trying to help for sure. The Borg were already on their way to Federation space and they had no idea about it. So while he put the Enterprise in danger, without it the Federation would have been wiped out. I think had Picard accept him as a crewmember, he would have found some way to introduce them to the Borg, I'm pretty sure it was his plan all along

      He wanted to humble Picard, show him how easily his life and those under his command could perish in the face of unknown danger. Wanted to see if Picard could move past his arrogance and accept that there are limits you dare not cross. At first, Picard was stubborn and resolute; in the face of their annihilation & assimilation, that's when they had to give in. Q was all but willing to let them all die if Picard didn't accept the futility of their situation, but in the end Picard grew as Q wanted and he granted the grace period they needed to prepare. Character is what Q finds most impressive, not technology & numbers.

      well, even if he renounces his powers, he will still retain most if not all of his knowledge and certainly a great deal of intelligence. so he would still be a really useful crewmember if picard had accepted him. he probably has the knowledge and intelligence to defeat the whole borg collective with a pencil.
      and i think it was less "oh let me try and warn those poor humans about the terror of te borg that is on the way" and more "humans are entertaining and borg are boring. let me make sure the universe stays interesting by having these funny little monkey people in it"

    The crew was rather suicidal, treating an entity like Q as if it was a clown. Sure it wasn't acting very seriously, but its power was absolute. The Q Kirk encountered was even more clownish but they quickly learned to fear it. It was plot armor that Q found their disrespect amusing. And their attitude stupid to the point of being pathetic.

      I think they realize he could wipe them out if he wanted, and they're just fed up of him. They realize their odds are likely no different if they grovel, or tell him to sod-off. So they tell him to sod off because they don't want to be his playthings.

      @@WufeiLord I also don't thing Q, or the continuum in general are interested in fear or worship anyhow. The whole thing was an exercise towards a point, moreso than just putting 'the fear of god' into the Enterprise and crew. Q showed them there is something out there they aren't prepared to fight well before it shows up on their doorstep unannounced, giving them time and motivation to prepare, as well as information. (It's just a shame that from a writing perspective, the borg are mostly a threat because no one exploits their glaring weaknesses, like how they ignore intruders on their ship and not a genuine threat in and of themselves.)

      We also don't know if she's even really El'aurian. She's been around for hundreds and hundreds of years just near earth. And she seems to have existed LONG before then if we judge by how Q recognizes her and he hasn't been around humans since before we had clothing lol

    the never did elaborate. Later Guinnen contradicts herself massively with the Borg
    "one day, you can open negotiations with them and establish a friendship"
    then in their next encounter "you cant negotiate with them. They wiped my people out."

      Not contradictory at all. She was referring to the human species capacity at our stage of evolution in the 24th century as compared to that capacity hundreds or thousands of years into the future. Turns out Captain Janeway and her crew accelerated that evolution out of necessity aboard Voyager.

      @@AzguardMike I remember that scene. As I recall, she appeared to be speaking from her own place of personal trauma and anger towards the Borg as a species. She was being emotional in that moment, with her words distorted by the bias of her personal experience. Later in that same episode, she convinced Captain Picard to meet with Hugh, and experience the same transformational change of heart she experienced.

    In retrospect, Whoopi Goldberg's acting in this scene is brilliant...she's aware of the danger involved, and is extremely tense, watching the conversation between Q and Picard, knowing what could happen if Picard slips up...which he does big time.

    I really wish they had done something with this. ANYTHING. It had the best setup and they threw it away. I want to know what Guinan's and Q's history was, and why she can fend him off. This had so much potential!

      That stance of hers suggests the writers had an idea to give her the ability to fend off Q, but didn't know how to go forward with it to keep with the feeling of the show. Even so, I'd still love to know what those "dealings" were.

      On Voyager Q's son does get a visit from Q when he summons a fleet of Borg ships to see what Janeway and the crew do.
      Q is very displeased with his son and yells at him "don't provoke the Borg!".
      This should indicate that even the Q avoid the Borg, for whatever reason.

      The Guinan character has more power than you can possibly imagine. She simply either wouldn't or couldn't use it, likely owing to self imposed non-interference directives on her species not much different than the Federation's Prime Directive. That would stand to reason, for a species capable of perceiving events and outcomes from the past, present, and future in a nonlinear temporal format and across multiple timelines.

      Q might have become extra-obnoxious about it later-on, seeing himself as savior.
      But in a way, it might also have tempered him, especially if he has a crisis of purpose.
      Still, though, usually you first have to break an insatiable character before actual change can occur.

    Love Q was one the gratest characters in all startrek. The fact he can transport you any where or when alone is the true meaning to explore. But the fact the crews in any case always say no. Cause they want to learn and evolve

      does she have any powers as far as we know she just has an extremely love life span that's all as long or longer then a Vulcan otherwise we know nothing about her race when we really start to look at her race not much is known about them may explain why the Borg were so interested they they obviously couldn't hold off the Borg which suggests no powers as the Q can play with the Borg and planets like pool balls

    Implying she had abilities that worried or challenged even the Q, and then doing NOTHING with it, was a huge mistake. She was the bartender, and occasional backup counselor. Nothing beyond that.

      Well, this probably helped lead to his being de-powered. The Q seem to be more the, "observe and record but stay out of the way mindset." The Borg getting stirred up at anytime is a F5 cosmic shit tornado.

      I just watched that episode and he didn't create the rule, he says the Q Continuum did, so maybe he got in trouble for this. But also he undid all the messes his son had created, and he was trying to keep his son from being kicked out of the continuum, so he's understandably upset.

      @@sarahberkner Fair. I phrased that badly. He stresses that rule with his son because I think at least some part of him regretted setting the Federation and the Borg on that collision course. Delay it even a century and Picard never becomes Locutus, Sisko still has a happy family, MILLIONS are still alive, and by the time the Federation runs into the Borg they've already outstripped it in tech even if the Borg has survived the Undine.

    I'm not sure, but i guess Guinan obvisiouly knew what Q was up to after hurling the Enterprise-D into the delta quadrant. She is omnipotent just like he is, so it is conceivable that she is not entirely innocent, at least with the incident and the contact with the Borg.
