Pushups and pullups perfectly replicates paddling. If you can do 70 full range pushups in a row, and 20 full range pullups you will be able to paddle your ass off regardless if you surf regularly. I know because i surf 3-4 times a year and ive always got more paddle power than anyone in the line up.
Nate and that "Epoxy" shit had me rolling! John says "it's your board" and Nate finally quits beating his head against the wall! I just really enjoy the frank, open "conversations" you guys have. It's like you're just sitting around shooting the shit and letting us sit in. Totally natural! I'd love to see Luke or any of the North Shore lifeguards and hear some of their perspectives.
I surfed for many, many years in the cold water of Northern California. Im now in my late 60s and now both knees, one hip, one shoulder, and some degenerated discs in my back. Surfing definitely takes a toll on one’s body (I’m sure the rock/ice climbing, skiing, and mountain biking contributed as well). With that said, I wouldn’t change a thing! Nate’s best videos are the ones where he gives tips. There was one about wipeouts i recall, something like trying to spot light through the foam, that I thought was great. I wish you guys could do more of those, and have examples of clips that give a better visual. I was trying to take in what you’re saying here, but the only take away is square shoulders on a steep drop, press into front foot harder. I was one of the YT people urging Nate to not go as heavy working out. It has been my experience that if you overdo the weights, you get injured. At 41, I workout more like Laird, for longevity, than I do to deadlift for strength. Deadlifts have taken out more discs in more people than they’re worth doing. There’s just certain lifts that aren’t worth it. Plus, you don’t necessarily need heavy heavy weight to get time under tension. You can pretend 100lbs is 1000lbs. But, training to avoid injury is all about proprioceptive exercise.Do all the stabilization and mobility training no one else does. Then deadlift every once in awhile. And you’re right Nate, shoulder mobility is everything for a surfer. I’m 37 weeks into surfing through a rotator issue while doing everything possible short of surgery to keep pain at bay. I let my shoulder get tight. Now I’m paying the price.

10 minutes non-stop freestyle swimming for warm up then 8x25m serious sprints 30 sec intervals. Build your swimming up to this trainnig 3-4 times a week plus a bit of chest and back swimming (5 mins each) and within some time you'll have great paddling and much easier and earlier drops.
I was able to visit Oahu in March. I surfed north shore a lot. (well, to be more truthful, I ate shit as much as I caught waves...haha) I had a coach from one of the surf lessons companies and he was great. He helped with a few tips on one of which was about my popup. While I was watching this podcast, Koa pointed out the same thing about being more committed and showed the pic of Andy Irons taking off. Your discussion and the pic reinforced my coach's point in my head. Once I started getting that committed (forward and downward) my waves caught went way up, so thanks for reinforcing that tip.
I have a home paddle training solution! Body By Jake: Tower200 door trainer. I lay on top a 3-4 ft pedastol and paddle with hands through bottom door holds with deep strokes. Just make sure hands don’t hit floor. Can use it’s variable resistance. I work beyond 9-5 sometimes, and live 45 mins from shore and lately weekend conditions suck. Mix in the Tower200 with some pool laps and stay paddle ready.
Equine sports are very similar because you have to be fully present in what you are doing! If you aren’t fully focused that’s when you see injuries because you are working with a 1200lb animals with a mind of its own! Great episode guys! !
Nathan, thank you for talking about your struggles with learning airs! I have been struggling with learning to surf for a while now I surfed yesterday and I was struggling with my bottom turns. Love the podcast guys, cant wait till you guys hit 100k subs!

It's funny how this shit humbles a grown ass man. Felt the same level of frustration learning to windsurf. Now Im trying to throw a forward on a windsurfer before turning 40 in two years. Thought it could be an interesting mini doc with all the other life shit that led up to this...but dunno if I want the on display. Appreciate the honesty. P.s. Started windsurfing because I have a chicken neck and HATE paddling. haha.
So glad you guys are committing to this! Think this might be my favorite podcast atm and each episode is only getting better. Thanks for another great one boys, lookin forward to the next
Watching surf content, and stuff like this, is great because it’s entertainment for guys who just can’t enough surf. Sure beats TV. And so it’s both the lifestyle/personality aspect and the surf itself that draws me to it. Style matters more than skill, imo, and entertainment value trumps all 🤙

It was such interesting épisode 👏
On your level i think it IS so blessing to overpush fear and difficulty gnarly situation 💪
!
Great freaking podcast episode..you guys hit the next level.
Nathan, thank you for talking about your struggles with learning airs! I have been struggling with learning to surf for a while now I surfed yesterday and I was struggling with my bottom turns. I've been getting so discouraged lately, so hearing you talk about how frustrating it is for you is inspiring. I cant wait to get back in the water today and keep grinding. Love the podcast guys, cant wait till you guys hit 100k subs!
Feeling the stoke from Kaneohe! Keep up the great content brahs 🤙🏼
Awesome to listen to boys, nice little vibe you have going🤙 and what you said is spot on some of us don’t always get the opportunity to travel to such exotic places and Hawaii is a pipe dream for me being in little old England 🏴 🇬🇧 hopefully one day I’ll make it over to your shores, but at least for now I get to see it throughout your eyes and vids 🙏
Another great clip you guys. Thanks heaps...
Great convo! Small account challenge I'm in
You guys have the most honest, informative and entertaining content, great work. I reckon Markus could dish up some great stories about you guys as groms. 👍
Great podcast on the little things that can make a difference, like the shoulder turn...dj
Style matters more than skill, imo, and entertainment value trumps all 🤙
Thanks for sharing your life's and passion. More power to you for making a living at it. my passion took me a different path and living as a chef. Rather be surfing ha!!
