    I think to add extra credibility to your channel, you need to have a plastic Morag phone you up from her loch and talk to you in a Scottish accent about watches and her thoughts on life in general.

    What I love about Marloe, and my Coniston Bluebird is my first mechanical, is that they do not go along with the crowd on design, but they aren’t out in the twilight zone either. Same with this. You see so many samey, samey dive watches, I give them props for being different and staking their own territory. Not crazy about the shell look on the indices, but I’ll say this about the hands, they match, vs a Spinnaker Amalfi where it looks like they picked two random sets of hands out of a bag.

      Agreed.

    • @lancehunter3821
      @lancehunter3821 3 года назад +3

      Kudos to Marloe for NOT creating yet another homage diver design. I agree there are WAY too many similar Oyster, 50 Fathoms, Turtle look alike dive watches out there. And the brutalistic hands are in marked contrast with the "soft" bivalve shells/indices on purpose. That contrast over a sand dial gives this watch a truly unique character, IMHO. Moreover, I'm not a diver and I'll never be down at depths of 310m, but the bezel DOES have a lumed pip which negates the underwater timing legibility complaints given in this review. Lastly, for this unique waterproof design with FANTASTIC lume (it's a shame this watch was omitted in his Lume Wars), and a smaller case size that will match my wrist, I think US $500 is a fair price... especially for a movement with +5 second/day! So I'm fine if they cut corners to match the ISO certification without having to pay for that certification and pass the costs on to customers. It's actually quite smart what they did to keep prices low. And if you're wondering, yes, I'm ordering one for Xmas. 😁

  • @gamesetmatt23
    @gamesetmatt23 4 года назад +10

    I agree there's definitely something incongruous between those hands and the hour markers, but for me, I think the problem is actually the markers and not the hands. The squarish hands actually kind of work with the industrial design of the case. I think the markers just look too delicate when compared to the rest of the watch, and that's only amplified by the hands they've chosen. If they had gone with something more block-ish or rugged looking, I think that would have suited the overall look much better. The softness of those markers is where it all comes apart. On another watch they might be the star (or shell!?) that make the piece, but they just don't fit here. I also think the colour of the dial does it no favours either (I'd like to see another colourway to compare). The soft blue-ish grey of the dial really clashes with the gunmetal case. Again, it's adding softness to a watch that elsewhere is designed to be hard as nails. Points for trying something different. Points off for a poor attempt (but hey-- it's made it all the way from the design phase to production, so it must be to some people's liking at least!)

    I have just purchased one of these watches, Jan 2021 with price in UK at £399 inc leather and silicon strap delivered. Which Seems excellent value for the uniqueness of the watch plus it’s supporting a small Scottish based company endeavouring to stay in business despite everything coronavirus is throwing at it. OK Marloe isn’t a Seiko, or a Rolex or any other of the mass market brands but at least you can phone Marloe at their place in Perth , speak to one of the owner, directors about their watches and get the feeling you are appreciated as a customer. That kind of customer support the big brands just cannot compete with. I bet there is a good chance that if I dropped in at Marloe’s HQ wearing my Morar they would welcome me in, have a cup of tea with a biscuit and show me their latest watches. If I did the same at say Rolex they would call security?

    Funnily enough, I really like it precisely because it's odd with contradicting design elements... However... the price shunts it directly into Helm territory, and that's a fight it's gonna lose. Or, if I want to buy British, the Hamtun is titanium, and a much more balanced design, for roughly the same money.
    There is something about it though...

    Keeping it real by calling them as you see them on watches provided to you free of charge, so thank you for that Jody. The case finishing and the angled knurling on the bezel edge are clearly the stars of the show. I don't have a problem with those blocky hands per se, but agree they clash with the shell motif of the indices. In addition to changing the shape of the hour and minutes hands , I think there was also a missed opportunity to carry the shell motif over to the lollipop and counterbalance on the seconds hand.

    Good job Jody. I've been following Marloe from the outset and can't help but feel that they're struggling a bit. They started out with rather handsome yet small, handwound dress casual watches, which have got to be tough to build a brand around at this point. They're slowly drifting towards a more sporty aesthetic - I'm guessing for commercial reasons - while trying to maintain their unique design philosophy. As a result, this one looks... just a little bit odd. It wouldn't be something I'd consider if I was in search of a tool diver or any diver for that matter. The Lomond Chronoscope, on the other hand, was an absolutely beautiful watch. I wish they'd put out a new version, as I'd be a buyer. Cheers!

    Well, let's separate the claims and the brochure from what we're looking at. It's not a utility diver. Agree about the bezel markings. I like the dial and the hands (sorry Jody) and the hands especially because they remind me of the Sinn U1, Brutal? yes, but also very practical. I like the colorway of the dial and hands and chapter as well -- it looks delicious. But so much a fan of the distressed-looking case (true for any watch I see with that styling cue) but I like the case shape. Look, it's not for me, but I think it's unique and attractive.

    It is so difficult to try and innovate in the dive watch market around this price point. This is a bold idea for a watch and I think they’ve tried to do something different. The problem is, at this price, there are so many brilliant diver watch options that any offering needs to be virtually flawless. I would be severely tempted if it were cheaper.

    I don't mind the hands, they remind me of the Sinn hands and the 40 mil size is actually a bit of a change of pace. The overall design aesthetic is actually kind of compelling. I have an 8in wrist but I quite like sporting my 40 mm Helm Komodo every now and again. The main issue is the price and the games they are playing with certification. If the watch was closer to $300 it would be a lot more compelling choice. At $500 I think it's batting out of it’s league. When you can get an ISO certified Helm at $275 to $300 or a Zelos in that fancy wooden box for around the mid 300’s I think they're being a little ambitious.

    Jody, I do love this piece, however, not for 515usd, maybe for 350usd, shame, really like it, love your videos, big fan 👍

    I think i like it. The finish gives some kind of a bathyscaph or old diving suit resemblance.

      The case seems the only part done right , the dial , hands , strap and the indices are not great. Maybe a meteorite dial with thinner hands and applied gunmetal lume filled indices would suit better.

  • @saintdave1877
    @saintdave1877 4 года назад +2

    If they had used the metal or colour on the rest of the watch on the hands ( and made the hands pointed ) it would've made the watch a little more attractive. A shame , would love to see a great Scottish watch too. It would have to be at least 200m water resistant ,just for walking to the pub and be hefty enough to be used in sports arguments 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤣

    Great video Jody. Always honesty from you and that is a great legacy. Speaking of honesty, I don't like any of the Marloe watches but this one really took the cake. Thanks for all you do. Brian.

    Cathedral hour hand and sword minute hand would soften this dial so much... but I’m not a watch designer. Maybe a focus group would have done some good?!? 😖

    Another expensive watch from an unknown company. Back in the day, you would pay US$200 for a watch like this. Now almost every new company will charge you US$500 (or even more) for a watch with an off-shelf movement !

    • @l.k5244
      @l.k5244 4 года назад +1

      This. The movement is like 100 dollars (for us consumers buying a single piece, not a watch company buying thousands), the strap is a couple dollars at best and the case, while it isn't particularly cheap, cannot be worth more than 200 dollars considering that other companies (like Invicta :D) are selling entire dive watches rated for 300 meters for less than that

    Love the look of the watch, but 40mm is too small for me.

  • @berntanders
    @berntanders 4 года назад

    Ok, it’s not the complete perfect watch, but RESPECT to them creating a watch with its own design. And a design that works for most parts. Bezel design maybe not perfect,. Size could have gone with a more tuna-shape to get a bigger watch and still compact lug to lug, but they stuck to giving it their own style. I dig the handset, but would probably reduced the hour-hand just a tiny bit, but that might have been to similar to the Doxa-hands.
    I’m not sure you’re going to see these small issues after a few weeks actually. Maybe with a different strap it could look even better. Prize is what puts me on the fence. Else I really liked the bit of uniq style 👍👌

    The packaging, brochure and dubious claims do seem a bit of a wank. Especially at this price. I do like the design of case and bezel but the hands and indices do not do it for me. Also agree that probably not that functional as a dive watch. So Marloe maybe spend less time and resources telling people about how great the watch is and spend more time on a watch that can stand on its own. Thanks Jody for the look.

  • @Ahcelaht

    I like it! But I'd like it even more if they filled the bezel markers with lume, extended the hands a little bit, and pointed the hands instead of a squared off end. As well as lowered the price a bit.

    Must admit i cant say that i particularly like the design of this watch at all, i dont like the faux aged look nor the mismatch design. However they do some other really nice looking watches, in fact ive just ordered a Coniston, which are much better priced at £300

    Good review Jody. As your channel has grown you are clearly receiving more free watches than before. Absolutely nothing wrong with that and it’s a great way for you to benefit from bringing us such good reviews. But honesty is a key currency to trade off and I’ve seen some dubious reviews on other channels I reckon are just paid promotion. So it’s great to see that you stay transparent and honest with us - really respect that about your channel. Another good review Jody keep em

    Love the design overall and the materials. Precision is just "holy" in my opinion and we reached it in the '90s. Not sure what wide spread horology is about in that sub-department.
