I'm in Tennessee.........land of clay and rocks, plus rain..........so much rain. Didn't think that I could start a garden. Your videos are helping me think otherwise. Thanks.
Oh my goodness, I LOVE that grow veg ap! I am highly disorganized and it really helps me in multiple areas. Also, it's like the world's best video game in these long, cold, Wisconsin winters. Thanks for sharing your process with us!
You are super organized, I do save all my seed packets and learning to keep records where I bought em.Try to know enough to repeat next season. Got to find new favorite veggies. Thanks for the teaching, Lady
You are one of the most organized people I have seen! Had to laugh cause I thought we were the only people that put seeds in baggies then into a tote. LOL. Only ours is a black tote to keep the light out. Awesome job done here!
Thank you for this video. I so glad to have a gardening channel in my state. Your videos are great resources. I tried the tip on growing seeds using the window and reflective box. I plan to make more as I find boxes to create the reflective box. I created the box slightly different using the Styrofoam as shelves. I was able to transplant bush beans, peas, summer squash, carrots, and one spinach plant. Now I am working on three varieties of lettuce. I have some vegetables growing in the portable greenhouse. These last two months have been very close to freezing out what I have in the greenhouse. Thank you for the videos .
New subscriber ... new gardener. This spring/summer has been an epic fail, but I truly had grandiose expectations. I used this as a huge learning experience. 1. I did not start small. 2. I did not gather enough information. 3. I listened to someone else, instead of planning on my own. 4. I planted too much variety. 5. I did a lot of direct sow ... no pre-soaking, no true ground prep, no mulching. I have a few plans for fall/early winter (I am in Texas 9a). But hubby has agreed to help by building above ground Hugulkulture beds during the cooler months. Next spring will be a lot different. I enjoy you videos!
I'm so glad you were able to use all of this as a learning experience, Carey, because that's exactly what gardening is... and always will be. I've been gardening almost my entire life and each season is a new learning experience for me too. You will amazed at how your results improve as you apply each lesson learned to the garden. Best wishes for wonderful results going forward! Also, thank you for subbing- I appreciate your support- take care!
Planning is fun. I have spread sheets and draw out the plan on paper many times until I'm happy. I use the odd section of a field so locations change every year. It makes planning more of a challenge but leaves room for trying new things as I have ample space. Finding the sweet spot of did I plant enough peas to graze off of and freeze a bunch for winter. Sifting through seed catalogs is so much fun, even if it's hard not to buy everything.
@@GrowfullywithJenna I know I got two little baggies for freezing and I doubled what we had the year before. My family inhales peas and I'm no slouch either even if I like beans more. Going to up the numbers again this year. Oh darn I have to plant more. Its such a hardship. I also just realized that this video is from 2 years ago. I guess that's what happens when you recently find a channel.
I'm so glad! My organizational system is admittedly not the prettiest-- but it gets the job done with the large amount of seeds I'm dealing with. Have fun planning and best wishes for a wonderful garden this year!
@@GrowfullywithJenna Oh I so understand, I have so many seeds too and can't wait to get them so that they will be easy to find and manage. Thank you!!! Same to you. Looking forward to an awesome garden in 2021 😁😁
That excel sheet tho😍! I've really taken to using photo box organizers with different color boxes (amazon it, you won't be disappointed!) for the smaller packets like your herbs and flowers. For the bigger packets like beans, peas and corn, definitely gotta go with Tupperware and ziplocks. P.S. thanks for giving me permission to make a wish list and just whittle it down. I tend to go a little crazy.
I'll have to look into that photo box-- is it something like this? www.amazon.com/Gaevenwin-Organizer-Colorful-Portable-Stickers/dp/B0BP2MB6TX/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=photo%2Bbox%2Borganizers%2Band%2Bstorage&qid=1672707144&sprefix=photo%2Bbox%2Bor%2Caps%2C87&sr=8-8&th=1
@@GrowfullywithJenna , yes! I ordered 2 and with the colorful boxes, you can assign different colors to however you want to store them. I'll share a picture on fb.
Seed organization idea: photo keeper box. Several videos have gone out lately. There’s little snap boxes that fit even big seed packets, and they all fit into a large case that has a handle. You can label, and buy multiple and organize by date and plant etc. Just a thought. I had bought one at Michael’s and couldn’t remember what I wanted to use it for. I’ve now got all my seeds filed neatly inside It. 😍
I love this idea! Someday when I get my (way too large) seed collection whittled down, I'd really like to do this. Thanks for sharing & have a wonderful week!
I am really enjoying your videos, thank you for sharing your extensive experience in such a kind, enjoyable way! I am definitely lacking when it comes to garden planning and organization. Right now I still haven't decided on where to plant things in the space that I have, and I have started to panick.I keep the seedpacks I plant this year together to review next winter. I should definitely do the spreadsheets.
I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the videos, Thalia- thank you! I definitely feel like a go in cycles- the year I shot this video I was super organized and on top of things. This year I feel like I'm so behind! We got a couple of nice warm days and I too, started to panic. I have to keep reminding myself there's still a little time before spring is here in earnest 😄
Testing 32 or plus tomatoes and 6 bell peppers ,Plan to cut back in time as needed taking notes of yield and taste. My cousins and neighbors will be blessed and we have extra but nothing seldom goes to waste. Yes them catalogs inspire me to. You advise of notes.,Also everyone should save seed pkts.and recipes telling where you got them
I don’t have a bed made yet and I’m so overwhelmed lol. Idk where to put it and idk what to plant next to what! Currently I’m just growing some herbs indoor as well as some vegetable scraps like onions, garlic and romaine. I have never grown anything from seed until I started these little herb pots. My parsley and dill are looking great. How do you know what to plant in which bed or next to what other plants?
Hi Tara- it's easy to get overwhelmed in the beginning, but there are some great tools for helping with this. The garden bed planners I mention in the video can be a great place to start, if for no other reason than they give you an idea of how much space you should give each plant. The Farmer's Almanac free trial is probably the best one I've played around with. As far as what gets planted next to what- honestly, I totally wing it. Plants get stuck in wherever I have room! You can get into companion planting--a book like 'Carrots Love Tomatoes' is a good place to start, but I've never seen much benefit. The main consideration is that you're not planting huge, tall plants where they are going to shade out smaller plants that need the sunlight... or planting vigorous, vining plants where they will choke out smaller plants. I've had all the plants you mention- romaine, garlic, dill, parsley and onions planted together and they've done wonderfully. Other than that, it's honestly just one big continual experiment-- jump in, get messy and learn from things that didn't work so well the first time around. I hope this helps and best wishes for a wonderful garden!!
I know the dimensions of my urban (20x20) starter garden. But how wide do the walkways have to be? Once I subtract for the walkways then and only then does all the other spacing requirements come into a plannable plot and determine the number of rows, spacing within the rows etc., unless I want a whole garden of lettuce and radishes. So what is the acceptable, standard distance between rows in a small home garden?
@@GrowfullywithJenna Thank Jenna. Gosh! I'm now in search of the lost foot. If I give the 36" for the walkways and then skimp on the rows to a like minded of 36" each, well my math says that comes out to be 252 total inches out of the possible 240. So you see I must find another 12" or the missing foot... Do you happen to have a magic wand?
By the amount of Spam I'm leaving on your videos you can tell I really have the Gardening bug bad. LOL I'm like a women in a shoe store when I walk by a seed display. I can never have enough. LOL I ended up like you. During the Winter I make my well intended plans but it's just a guide and never looks like my drawing or ends up like it. I look at gardening as the never ending learn on the fly and be flexible and just enjoy. Learn and make notes for the next year is key. I do most of my gardening in pots so this year I might try to put some Onions and Marigolds in each 17 gal container with my tomatoes.
My goodness ... that bug must be severely contagious! I can easily pass up all the shoe displays in the world but get me close to seeds and my eyes gloss over 🤩🤩 I was lucky enough to get some empty feed tubs from a farmer which I will use to grow potatoes in this year in the hope to keep voles away from those yummy tubers! Wishing everybody a successful gardening year 👩🌾
