I've been dragging my feet to make a map of my garden, but if you can sit out in the cold to make this video, I can go out and make my garden map.
These are exactly my thoughts too 😂
This is exactly me 🤣
With a small fire pit!
This was me too for a while. Did you ever get to making your garden plan yet?
@@KitchenGardenTours funnily enough I'm just doing mine now! I did start it 3 weeks ago but got distracted 🤣
Loved the comment on cutting back on the amount of Kale in plan. Every year I cut back on the number of Kale plants I put in, and every year we have way too much Kale. LOL
Same 😅
I alway plain my allotment within an inich of my life int he winter.. but as soon as the summer comes im completely over it! and just plant everything randomly.
First thing I see when stepping out in my garden in January - my chard from prior years has gone rogue! 😄
This year I definitely need to get more things going upwards and less outwards. I grew indeterminate tomato plants for the first time last year, and definitely didn't support them enough (i.e. at all), and so the harvest wasn't great. And while I've grown cucurbits fairly well by just letting them sprawl out, as I've been wanting to add more things to my garden, they're taking up valuable real estate. 2023 goal - it's trellis time!
Hi Huw. Thank you for another interesting video. I used to make a pen and paper plan for years but a few years ago I created a simple drag and drop veg planner for myself in Microsoft Excel which works a treat. Each year I just ‘save as’ the previous years plan and adjust for my new years layout. With this I also get a record of what I’ve grown and where in previous years. It is my own personal creation so I don’t want anything in return but if you would like a copy please let me know. Kind regards. Gary
Be great if u can share it
You've motivated me to recheck my garden plan for 2023! Less random squash I probably won't eat and more Carrots that will store and get used over winter.
How do you store your carrots? It's something I'd love to be able to do coming into this growing season.

I'm so glad I found you last weekend when I was binge watching garden videos! Your garden is absolutely stunning and you make it all look so easy! I am in zone 7 in the US and last year I started getting serious about gardening when my husband brought home a bunch of big wooden crates from his job. I started my gardening journal last year and made diagrams and notes and thought I had it all figured out until our weather went totally nuts and everything changed. This year I hope to do better. The biggest problem I have is getting my brassica seedlings to grow at the right time.
You're going to LOVE!!!! Huw's videos. Check out the one's he's done in the past. They're marvelous! I've learned sooooo much from him. Happy Gardening! 😊
@@hadassahhaman7550thank you for the encouragement!
Check out his book
She's right! His books are very helpful. I grabbed them from the local library but realized I needed to make purchases for regular review. Happy Gardening!!!! ❤️
That's great that you're getting into gardening! I love Huws channel, so much info. Love when he visits other gardens too. Another fab one is Charles Dowding, big into no dig gardening. Happy gardening from Ireland 😊
His book 'Grow Food For Free' is one of my all-time favs. Love his channel.
Ruthless Prioritisation is key! I grew so much last year, I didn't really want. More of what I actually enjoy this year.
Great video, I'm in zone 6b US. The only thing I have started is onions earlier this week but I have changed my garden plan at least 4 times in the last month 🤣🤣.
Thanks for this! Just ordered potatoes for 2023. My crop of potatoes in 2022 was amazing but lost loads of potatoes in those 30l tubs with frost damage (I left them in! darn!). Will be following your channel closer this year. Just a suggestion but how about a short video which could be "weekend jobs" on a friday which would be a great help to knowing what the priority is for that weekend?
I only have two big grow boxes and everything else in pots. Squirrels are my pests! I’m growing more vegetables that require less light. You inspire me always thanks for video 🍁
Huw you are Always thinking about how to help us in our Gardening Endeavors I wasn’t even thinking about planning my Garden but Now I’m going to
This was SO helpful! I've been working on making a garden planner since Christmas but I couldn't figure out how to prioritize things. This was exactly what I needed. Thank you so much!
I was right there with you on getting a garden plan together. Did you get yours together yet?
I'm starting my garden this year. I'm excited for the challenge but nervous incase I do it wrong.
Good luck! The best advice I was given was to remember to enjoy it! That advice really helped when the weeds threatened to take over and I felt a bit overwhelmed.
Lessons, not mistakes! Always a learning curve no matter how much you've been at it😉
There are multitudes of food forests in temperate climates, food forests aren’t at all limited to tropical locations/plants. Perennial foods can be very efficient, low input options for self-sufficiency and resilience over time and should absolutely be a key staple if that is the goal. Requires different planning and forethought than annuals and in some cases patience but the payoff is exponential especially compared to the effort required.
I’m working on incorporating some perennials too. I’ve discovered a few edible wild plants grow abundantly in my garden, like Galinosa, and I’m experimenting with dedicating some space to let them flourish without crowding my cultivated plants. It always feels like a gift offered from the Earth when delicious plants grow themselves in my garden 😊
I can hardly wait for spring, so excited to grow 😊
Always love a good plan and growing what we want. Learn from mistakes and not bother with certain veg.
You are so very informative. I learn more about gardening every year and I'm so eager to share with others what I've learned. Thank you for your knowledge.
Awh thank you very much Margie!
A wood pigeon just ate my winter kale. Stripped it back to the stems, the bastard. Watching this has stopped me wanting to give up. Thanks 😊
I found my local indigenous 💚 welcome centre to be quite knowledgeable about gardening with local vegetation if people are looking to help the bees’ needs 🐝 🐝
I already checked my seeds and when I can sow them, but making a map of where what crop will go might be a very wise idea. 👌
Sounds like you have a really good start on your garden plan Marina. Did you go with a drawn out plan like Huw's? I just posted a video of my garden plan using the information in one of his books. Have you read any of his books yet?
@@KitchenGardenTours not really, life got in the way. Unfortunately my garlic got washed away with the amount of rain 🌧 of the last month. So that is a fail. I got a lot of seeds of which I do not know how they will do since they are old. So this year it will be partly go with the flow. We did however plan the border of the vegetable garden.
@@marinasanders8299 I think you’ll be surprised at old seeds germinating. My mom has seeds from decades ago that she swears will do just fine lol good luck on the garden! Feel free to send your rain to Texas…we could use it! 😄
I really recommend this plant planning course. I did it a few years go and it’s still working for me now 👍🏻
Thank you so much! That's great to hear :)
I've made the pretty plans all out after seeing what plants cohabitated nicely....research research....then I always head into the garden with my basket o seeds and start digging! Plans be darned! 😂
Just thought 'I need to get a plan started for this year' and there is this video popping up! Planning on adding some new to my garden veg this year, aubergine, little mini squashes, gherkins, orca beans and some more tomatoes, all selected for being quick maturing and cold resistant.
Amazing! Yes, discovered the extra space too, since I´m collecting also all the seeds from the fruits/vegetables that I´m consuming, to replant directly.
I have your course and it’s amazing!! I’ve already done my plan (back in December) and I’m excited to see how my garden develops this season! Just as feedback (I’ve been an online course creator for over 10yrs too myself!) I think many of us in the course miss having our questions answered in the questions section of the course videos :) it’d be really cool if you could answer some of the most repeated ones? (Especially because in the course you encourage us to ask you!) 😊 Thank you, Huw!!
Great video! I bought your book "Veg in One Bed" and did a deep dive into planning my garden better this year. Thanks for making it easier!
seriously thinking about moving fro the city and have my farm ans stuff, this videos are helping me so much
Your video and garden planner are both well done and much appreciated. Nice work👍
As usual, you are a LIFESAVER!
Hi Huw, great video with lots of ideas for the coming season. Thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
great video huw. have you ever seen GrowVeg channels garden planner. i use it now and its amazing. tells you when to crop rotate, companion planting etc. really good to have
Oh how I wish the growing season was as long in Québec! I start planting in June and by September there are chances of frost. I will look for videos on the greenhouse so perhaps there is hope!
Love the idea for a detailed monthly garden plan!!
Excellent video, very informative and comprehensive, thanks for sharing.
Great timing, as I sit organising my new seed storage, suggested by the fab Tanya @lovelygreens, your video has motivated me to look at how I plan my sowing differently. I have tended to go in the direction of using the space for those unknowns first and then follows disappointment. Luckily I'm always using a pencil. As always great helpful video, thanks Huw!
I have maybe 1/8th of an acre. I need to maximize every inch...this will be first year garden on previous lawn... I'm lucky that the soil seems to grow anything really well, but there is also a ton of shade.
Annnd... I just completed a seed inventory... I have enough to plant out 10acres I think...
So... How do you rejuvenate really old seeds? Found some from 1995... Lol.
You are sooo amazing for this understanding and preparation. I live in very small apartment’s and have a container garden I’m still not great at but have grown a few things successfully at least. Our weather has been all over the place. Thank you so much for this! ❤👏
So outstanding! Thank you very much Huw! You are so generous with your time and knowledge and have inspired me, again.
Hi Huw,
I love the idea of having a drawing for the garden. I had my son take a drone picture of my garden and my daughter converted it to basically just an outline of all the beds. It works amazing. I'd love to share some pictures with you. How can I share some pictures with you. Mike
I need this video ❤️
Ready for spring 🙂
You are very easy to listen to, very calm voice and calm visually
Packed with good tips, I think you're my favorite gardening channel :) I wish you a wonderful new year!!!
Thank you very much for all your efforts
Me watching this video: Oh, but Huw, can't I just do what I did last year and just shove it all in and then wonder why I don't have space for the things I really like?
Ok, ok. I'm begrudgingly accepting maybe drawing up a plan is a good idea. 😄
Great presentation gave me a lot ideas, thank you
Pure genius! Thank you
Great advice Huw. I always find your advice very informative 😊
Thank you so much Amir I'm really pleased you do☺️
also keep the plans from priror years and make notes what did and didnt work
this means next year or years after you can use that same plan and not have to think about it and know it will work, if you rotate crops this works well
Thank you for this series!
Thanks Huw. Do you have a video on your water collection rain barrel setup? That would be really helpful for information and inspo, thanks!
Where do you plant the cannabis, LOL. Great video for people. Planning is the most important then execution. Cheers from Missouri, USA
I'm all ready! Thanks Huw!
Well done! :)
Thank you! Can’t wait for the growing season 🎉
No fruits?
I'm so bad at planning the garden. I feel like it's such a big task, it will take so much effort to make. I want to do it, but it's always felt like it's just too much work for me to then not stick to it for any reason.
It's also tough sometimes to pinpoint when exactly a crop is going to be finished. Depends on disease, pest pressure, climate. The problem is not when the crop finishes early, but when it goes on for longer.
Predicting all of this is particularly difficult to new gardeners, that have no idea how long it will take until harvesting something.
Still, your advice is really good! I just have to tell myself I have to do this and dedicate an afternoon to it.
Hi Richard. i AM starting now my bed garden and i learning whith 2 ir 3 youtubers garden vídeos. You are One of them. I follow you for at least 2 years. And i apreciate your work and your simple way to explain things about garden.
I have a question what the meaning of the Numbers inside the Beds in your design? Can you tell me.?
Hi Huw, thank you so much for all the wealth of information you share on this channel, as well as your infectious love of nature and gardening! I am currently planning my spring garden, and there’s a spot a little ways from the vegetable patch, a shaded area under some Leyland Cyprus trees, that is quite barren and has been bugging me. I would love to plant something edible there, or else something that will help bring pollinators and aid the entire yard in some way, but I know that there isn’t a lot of room for a root system and the area doesn’t get a ton of sun. Would you or anyone have ideas for what I could plant, or how best to utilize the space? I live in zone 7. Thank you:)
Hostas, violas, astilbe, ferns, hellebores. Not positive about zones, but there are lots more!
How about potted plants in that area? Shade tolerant, but they wouldn’t be competing for roots and nutrients in the soil.
Merry Me lol thats a sexy garden plan 🤣🌞🙏
Great vid huw, going to follow this, cheers
Have you ever grown comfrey, great fertilizer etc.
wow
nice video great job
Thank you very informative! I only have 2 beds but I make the most. Any advice last years strawberries took over. I hate to destroy all but with such little space, is there a better way to clear them out of my bed but still keep them?
Maybe transfer into some pots?
Hi Mary, have you ever tried growing strawberries in a length or two of plastic guttering? That way, you can suspend them above your beds or attach them on brackets to a fence. The strawberries will overhang the guttering and won't be soiled and you can liberate space in your beds for other plants. If you suspend them over your beds, you'll be able to benefit from any excess run-off when watering, which will water the plants below!
@@ianoliverbailey6545 excellent idea!
I use Hanging baskets for my strawberry 🍓 plants, and also an elevated raised bed my son made for me from old pallets, it’s waist level I love it .
Thank you all, such great ideas! @Soli deo Gloria. @lanoliver Bailey @Bernadette Sullivan
I think I end up with 20 some iterations.
Hi, I’m down in Australia and understand the sowing times are a little different though as I only just stumbled onto your channel I was keen to grab your course and noticed the code doesn’t work. Will you be posting a new code in the future so I can join you then? Cheers and really appreciate your content 😊
Love all the information bro….. what pepper verity are you growing this upcoming season? There are some amazing new types every year.. the pepper community online shares new varieties…. A pretty passionate group of people…
I was just thinking about how do I plan out my little garden. What are the numbers you put underneath each crop?
Thanks sir.god bless you.
So jealous, ill be lucky to get plants in the ground by end of May around here
What is a good crop to put into my raised bed after we harvest garlic?
This is my first year having a garden and I want ALL the things but know if I start too big I’ll get overwhelmed and give up 😢
Hello do you offer any discounts to your course this year? Thanks ☺️
Hi Huw, all the module trays are out of stock. Do you know when they'll be back?
Where would you recommend to get raised beds from and what type? Idealy not costing the world. Thanks
Is that a transportable fire pit/tray? Pretty neat!
Thanks for this Huw, I wasn’t planning on doing a planting plan as this going to be my first season growing so I was just going to trial and error method. 🤞🏾 but after watching you video I think I will put something down on paper. I still haven’t built my beds yet. Do you have any advice on this? Many thank❤
If growing potatoes in pots, would you still grow brassicas in the same pots?
The beds I see in video are perpendicular to the contour of the land (from as much as I can see), wouldnt it be better if they were parallel? It would stop a lot of rain water and increase land fertility.
Last year I had a massive problem with what I think we’re leather jackets, any tips of getting rid of these? Last year I had little success growing other than courgettes, radishes, carrots and rocket! My tomatoes were awful last year no matter how much I watered them they went crispy in that heatwave!
I need to find out which vegies will grow close together and which ones wont. For example can you grow (say) potatoes and lettuce right next to each other ?. Trying to find a video on that subject but to no avail so far. Thanks for any help that anyone may have to offer. P.S. the growing is to be done in the Philippines.
Nice Garden Beautiful Video 👌🏻👌🏻😎🌸🌸🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌷🌷🌷🌺🌷🌺🌷🌷
Huw, last year I had a deer move into the woods next to my garden and she ate EVERYTHING above ground. I don't want to turn my garden into Alcatraz so how do I plan for this? She's still there
I hate my garden, hopefully I can set the foundations for a great garden after watching this
When is the best time to plant potatoes in Seattle Washington?
Huw: do a quick assessment of your growing space
Me, a Canadian: yep, my garden space is still under 4ft of snow
where can I get that fire pit
oh goodness. this made me happy and sad. I bought the smallest mobile home in a mobile home park because it had the because yard/garden potential. 5 months into soil rehab, the park manager said that she would drive over it all if she needed to get to the fence/water supply and such. She also catches and kills cats. Anyone wanna by a renovated home?
Is she legally allowed to do this? Since you bought the home and property?
@@revollamina , depends on the particular park. There are a couple ways mobile home parks make their money. 1) lease the home and lease the pad the home is on (separate monthly costs). 2) Sell the home but lease the pad the home sits on. 3) Sell both (very rare), and charge a monthly cost, like an HOA, for services.
I am so sorry to hear this. Your plot isn't sounding good as a long-term option, and you have already invested time, money and effort into getting started. Could you plant into containers that can be moved when maintenance work is planned? And take the containers if you decide to move to another property at a future point? Also, perhaps consider some low growing plants and herbs that can spread and regrow if driven over? Or growing up a trellis if you can work out a safe spot?
Hi I live in a extra care community we have four raised beds but they are two foot deep how can I make sure there’s enough nutrients in them for the next growing season the soil as been there since before I came three years now do you have to change it or just revitalise it I tried to grow leeks but they didn’t grow the beds six foot in length width four foot I’m new to growing any advice cheers
I would add compost on top of your soil, the more the better I'd say!
Can you help please. For some reason I can never grow carrots. What could I be doing wrong. I have tried both in the ground and containers
Where do you recommend ordering seeds from Huw?
How do you keep wild life from eating your garden? I live in the low desert in the US and rats are a bigger problem than the rabbits. Any greenhouse or poly tunnel type structure will limit what I can grow.
Hola! Por favor subtítulos en español !
The small size and odd shape of the yard I have to work with means all kinds of curvatures and difficult drawing. I'll do my best 😝
Hi! Could you please advise me if one can compost paper sheets with text printed on them and old notebooks with ink from ballpoint pen on them?
If you have fairly large amounts of other compostable materials, the relatively small amount of printing inks won't have a huge effect overall. I find that putting the sheets through a shredder before composting promotes rapid destruction and dilution in the mass of compost. Increasingly, toxic inks are becoming outlawed and the more recent ones can be safely composted. If in doubt, send your paper to the recycling plant.
@@ianoliverbailey6545 Thanks!🤗
In the UK, I'm pretty sure printing inks were made safe some years ago so unless printed stuff is super old it's ok... Interesting point about a ballpoint pen though... Does anyone know about laws on pen ink toxicity?
Dedication sitting outside in this weather 😂🥶
Does N.S.W.E orientation matter? ie Greenhouse and Beds.
Elliot Coleman, author of four season harvest, says to orient beds east to west for maximum sun exposure.
I have mouse birds and they strip my spinach plants
Lots of great tips and information but, the poor audio quality and lack of volume needs to be improved...difficult to hear the proferred information.
