  • Dad and I took a trip to Cherokee North Carolina to do a little fishing. We were having a nice day until the DNR showed up. We didn't realize that we were doing anything wrong, but SURPRISE!!! Nice guy though. We were in the wrong and we'll pay our fine, which goes right to the hatchery. No big deal really, but we learned our lesson. Always do your research before fishing or hunting in a new area.
Part 2 of this trip will be published soon, so stay tuned!

He was a pretty cool warden. It could have been a lot worse. Glad both parties were civil with each other and that can decide on how an officer approaches the infraction.

You are lucky you didn't wind up in jail. The Cherokee wardens don't play around. It's fly fishing only with one barbless hook catch and release only. If you do what you did it's usually at least $1000 and a trip to jail.

I have fished the trophy section for several years. I think that it is marked well. Fly fishing only, all catch and release, do not believe it is barbless.

My opinion is don't go fishing in Cherokee. Nothing is clearly marked . No signs stated laws or regulation's . You do anything that you don't know about you will get a big ticket . That's when you will get explained what you did wrong . So many regulation's you will do something or have something or line will go into area to get a ticket . I have talked to different people who got a ticket . It's like going to the casino , you lose .

Hi Corey I said clearly marked . If you are aware of any signs with regulation's posted at the K O A ponds put up a photo of them . No one can read a posted sign that's not there . They don't have rules and regulations in print that you can buy or that they give you when you purchase your permit . When you call ahead with questions to make sure you follow regulations , it would be nice if the information your given is correct . I have seen videos of people getting a ticket they ask where is the sign . One officer told me about three regulations that I never did find . Maybe you are employed there I don't know . I know an insult when given one . I'm too nice to give you one in return . You have a great day .

I know there are rules and regulations but lots of these waters especially in rivers, creeks and certain lakes contain so many types of contaminants. Lots of these fish are contaminated with mercury, pcb and other chemicals at the same time people fish just for fun they're fined and many times taken to court. I understand that nature has to be protected but at the same time they won't protect these waters and fush from people who actually pollute the waters. Creeks in my area and the Potomac river are so contaminated that there are warnings not to get the water on you. If people risk their lives just to go fishing for recreational why are they so strick. Can these water be safe to drink from? I'm a fisherman myself and yes I obey all laws. These are just my thoughts and questions. Fish in the oceans like blue fish, tuna, and many more has so much mercury in them. It's very bad to consume them but are still regulated. The commercial fisherman paid maybe one a year fee I'm not sure but they can catch as many as they like and sell these fish for profit. For regular anglers like you and me can't sell these fish. Has limits and size. Many times we drove hours and paid for gas, food, hotels, baits, ice and many more but are allowed a few amount of fish. It's just not fair and stupid. Yes, I believe that every species of fish should be protected so that people can enjoy it for many years to come. The first thing they should do is clean up to creeks, rivers, lakes, bays and so forth. We've spent much on fishing supplies that cost us thousands and only to lose them due to rocks and branches. Conservation is a must but at least not picking on the little guy who are trying to go out and enjoy nature. Keep on fishing everyone and yes, do not liter there are so many people who are doing that and we know who they are. Nature is beautiful and relaxing by doing our part really help preserve our great and beautiful parks and waters. 👍😁🙏🙏🙏
