      Why don't you call just d.h.s. to build your garden for you and declare martial law to keep the bugs out of the dirt and start forcing seals to wear diapers and research grant funding for that?
      You really should'nt need to research a freaking grant in order to put a few p.v.c. fittings together and build a cheap frame for a plastic tent with a couple moving blankets w/ a cheap u.v. heat lamp and a few pots and a drip hose = 75 bucks tops... And if you can't afford a lamp the just use clear plastic.
      Literally, you just cut up some 30 gallon black trash bags and envelope them around a few cheap moving blankets and glue them them around a cheap p.v.c. frame and hang a lamp and run some drip lines from a garden hose around some pots or wood planters that you can build yourself or you could even glue the p.v.c. together and drill holes and put in a few drip lines appropriately where you want plants and then use the baby greenhouse frame as the water irrigation pipeline feed and that would make less mess and if you wanted to be a maniac about it you could throw in some insulative aluminum foil = i.d.k. why all you Edu people live solely for the sake of designing and develop your quintessential humanity to be oriented around blowing government money down the drain. Maybe it was because of your asiatic gangster-mob-boss n.s.a. uplines working with their latin-arab nazi cartel correspondant national gard gangmember raised group-home society engineered & socialised gustapo forced sex-change-victim cops that grew your brain to function like that.
      A grant... S.m.h
      You are the reason america has almost lost every war we ever were involved with and you are the reason all of our businesses keep collapsing with you people always running endless communist scams.
      You communist euro-Russians lying about being from the u.s. are the most non-alaskan and un-american people in the universe with your fake last names lying about being older heritage generations because nobody actually cares about any of that type of stuff enough to care about researching why you all had to lie about your identities in order to live with the rest of the general public.
      A Grant? Didn't you take woodshop in highschool or at least seventh grade? What happened to the World? :(

      @@animahopelaurensteele2132 It might just be $75 dollars to you but when you are a teacher there are a lot of things that just cost a little and really add up. When you aren’t paid much to begin with and then you pay for so much it really adds up. Also, grants aren’t just given out by the government. Your comment isn’t helpful and shows you lack of knowledge on the subject.

      We are used to it here and in turn people like myself do not understand how Y'all can live in the insane heat Y'all get and how much of a waste in energy it is to keep yourself cool all summer. I picked up a AC unit 2 years ago and have used it for 1 month at least(usually around now until August because we are 70+ and it is too damn hot) each year and the electric costs are insane. And going outside is a "no go zone", screw that, I will take 70s and 30s all year long over that shit any day.

      Lol I can't even imagine it being that cool in June, I'm in NC about 40 minutes north of Charlotte and we have two seasons: summer and a mild winter (we MIGHT have an inch or two of snow once a year, if that). It's great that our growing season can be as long as the beginning of March through the end of October, but it does get so unbelievably hot and HUMID June through August (average temperature being 90℉ or higher with at least 90% humidity). Even with occasional rain we still have to water every day. I can't even imagine going through what California is going through right now!!

    I want to say that I have never gardened in Alaska, but a friend of mine who does uses Paint Strainers (the ones that fit in one gallon and five gallon buckets) to protect the growth point from the evil midges. I know he uses bamboo BBQ skewers to hold the strainer off the plant(because I mail him the skewers and strainers) I thought they were odd requests, until I realized it was way cheaper for me to buy them in Virginia and mail them to him in Alaska, than it was for him to purchase those items locally.

    I watched this while making cottage cheese for the first time, from milk that had soured. I haven’t figured out what I want to do with the whey but I couldn’t be more pleased with how easy and quick the process is. I have red wine vinegar sitting in a closet, probably close to ready, just picked up some SCOBY to make kombucha (first time as well!) and have a decent number of containers on my patio (potatoes, tomatoes, radish, rhubarb, horseradish, mixed flowers and more). I moved from a studio with no outdoor space to a 1 bedroom with a patio in April and being able to garden again has been such a salve for my mental health. My absolute favorite smell in the world is tomato plants and when I’m stressed out it’s so lovely to run my hands through them, helps ground me and bring me back to calm. Your videos are so informative and well done, editing wise, I love watching you both work and learn together. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your life with us!

    I've always had a garden and the one thing I've learned is that mother nature is unpredictable and I'm very thankful I don't have to make a living this way. It is a great hobby and a great source of wonderful food.....but the trials of mother nature are not to be taken lightly. Here in West Virginia my cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, garlic, lettuce, radishes and peas are all harvested from the Spring garden, with the beans, onions, peppers, tomatoes, corn, cucumbers and winter/summer squash taking center stage for the next two months. Then comes the fall garden, which here means starting the winter vegies as well. I'm lucky to be far enough south that something is growing all year long.....even when interrupted by a few feet of snow.

    Thank you so much for sharing. I love gardening too it started with mostly flowering bushes. I have 24 hydrangea bushes and it’s moved on to vegetable gardening. I planted two beds of asparagus this spring. I have garlic from last fall just forming scapes now. I have about 20 tomatoes, carrots, peas, beans, sunflower, cucumber, zucchini, lavender, strawberries, kale, edible pansies, onions and radishes, tons of herbs and lettuce. I absolutely adore watching it grow. I live in Nova Scotia and our season is shorter as well so I started a lot inside from seed and learned a ton about that through some mistakes. Cabbage is really easy to preserve by a simple salt fermentation. No canning necessary. I also dehydrate it sometimes for future soup additions. It'll also keep many months in a root cellar. Sometimes I set grocery store cabbage in a dish of water and they not only stay juicy but usually even start growing again. A stripped core placed in water will usually sprout new, tender leaves.

    • @TheCowEmporium
      @TheCowEmporium 3 года назад

      @@belieftransformation We use straw or lawn clippings (that haven’t been sprayed). We also use wood chips however you don’t want the wood chips to mix with the soil because the wood chips (and straw) tie up the nitrogen in the soil. So we put cardboard down and then a layer of wood chips. You may want to be careful when first mulching because not all plants will like this type of care.
      Be sure to remove any mulch at the end of the season as working it in will be bad for your garden.

    Have you ever considered planting a couple of tomato plants that mature early outside to get the ripened by the sun taste? Early Girl variety comes to mind.

    • @godlessevilfeeling
      @godlessevilfeeling 3 года назад +7

      To my knowledge living here for 15+ years, no varieties of tomatoes will ripen before you have to harvest them. But, if the predictions from the GSM we are going into are true, Alaska will have growable climate for almost 11 years and we may be able to ripen before harvest.

    Ariel, im using an idea from "robbie & gary" u-tube with using tulle over my broccoli's & brassica's, its very cheap & it keeps a lot of insects off your plants & laying eggs,the butterfly moths are my pain in gardening.It's reusable so works a long time for the season. Next year i will cover mine as i plant them. Still learning new ways & ive gardened 50yrs. Love the tulle my son said looks like i have ghosts in my garden😆, saves me work i love it. Love you guys great vid🖒

    My dad was so funny. Before I went to visit him in the UP of Michigan he told me his garden had done so well the previous year that he had doubled his crop. I was really surprised because I had not known of him gardening before as he lived on a sandy beach. What that meant when I got there was he had taken two tires and filled them with dirt and planted a tomato plant in each one. I guess the tires help hold in the heat..he said he was a farmer now. Lol

    Gardening is a constant experiment, and as every year goes by, there is always something new to try. I'm guessing you don't have the white cabbage butterfly there because the leaves have not been attacked. I plant Borage around my tomato and potato plants because I have found it keeps the tomato worms away, they say they flowers have a cucumber taste, but they taste like raw green beans to me, but lots of bees come to them. I like your channel because a lot of the things you are doing, are things I do. I look forward to upcoming videos and hope to see you taking advantage of the bounty that is Alaska; clamming, crabbing, shrimping, rockfishing, cod fishing, bear hunting and processing. Congrats on having such a high "views/subscribers ratio", very impressive to have such a loyal following.

      But, they're not weeds when you eat the leaves and make tea and syrup with the flowers. Speaking of that, when you cut the flowers off, do it over the bowl, then if any fall, they fall into the bowl.

      Dandelions are excellent source of salad greens which is an excellent source of vitamis iron and potassium. And an added bonus you can also eat the pretty yellow flowers in your salad, as well 🥗!
      You should do the research, and study it over. Because, if you gather enough dandelion blossoms you can make dandelion wine! I've had some before, it's very delicious. 🍷🍷
