Little known fact though, some of the vocals aren’t Annie, on Must Be Talking To An Angel, Sweet Dreams, Missionary Man, and others, some backing vocals were done by other singers, such as Joniece Jamison who also helped give Shakespeare’s Sister a similar boost.
The backing vocals were always duly credited on the inlay sleeves and if you take notice Annie never mimes to those parts on the videos, Joniece even appears on the Missionary Man video and on live shows, and don’t anybody get me wrong, it was mainly all Annie for the most part, but many people don’t realise that, mostly during the unworded parts when things get really high, echoey and intricate, it isn’t all Annie.
Just worth pointing that out because many people mistakenly believe it is.

Linda Ronstadt was asked who she thought was the female singer that she thought was the most revolutionary new singer, she said that Annie Lennox was the one that stood higher then any other. and to get a compliment like that from Linda Ronstadt is one of the highest honors.

    • @gmatt200

I've lost all respect for Ronstadt because of what I've heard about her sleeping around to get to the top. I saw her on one of the late night shows quite awhile ago, and she was a total B**ch. She complained about nuns being stupid, etc. No nice comments about anyone.

The cow was a reference to how the music industry treats artists - basically as cattle that need to be fed and herded only for profit. Everything about this song and video were extremely radical for the time - the song itself, Annie's presentation with the hair and the suit (she was anything BUT the traditional presentation of a female artist) and Dave Stewart's creepy/cool/techno instrumentation. That time period (late 1970s/early 1980s) was a very radical experiment in what could be considered "mainstream" music (The Cars, The Pretenders, etc.)

Annie is a very accomplished musician on her own. She was literally weeks away from graduating from the Royal Academy of Music where she studied the flute, piano and harpsichord when she dropped out to play those instruments in bands.
By the way, Dave long ago credited her with writing most of the lyrics to all their songs. He joked that every time she borrowed his coat, when he got ir back the pockets would be filled with napkins, gum wrappers, etc., with lyric ideas she had scribbled on them.
In a biography he credits her with spontaneously coming up with the lyrics to “Sweet Dreams” while listening to some synth music he had recorded on a reel to reel. The tinkling you hear when she sings “hold your head up, keep your head up” is actually both of them tapping on milk bottles.

Sweet dreams was a reaction to the way they were treated by record executives when trying to get or renew their contracts, hence the ‘chorus’ of “some of them want to use you, some of them want to be used by you, some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be abused” as a general description of executive / artist relations in the early 1980’s when the “casting couch” was as much a part of getting signed as an artist as it was in the film industry in places.

Not sure who told you that, but it's not true. Aretha barely talked to Annie throughout the making of the song and the video. I didn’t realize just how amazing her voice is until I saw Michelle Chamuel sing “Why” on The Voice. It struck me that she was the first person I’d seen perform an Annie Lennox song…then I started really thinking about Annie’s songs and I realized that I’d never really LISTENED to it. I may have been listening to her songs, but I wasn’t paying attention to how incredible the singing was. I realized that the reason I’d never seen someone performing her music before is because it would be very difficult to do what Annie does vocally.

I remember the absolute buzz in college with people constantly chattering in class about "Did you see the video with the girl with orange hair!". The singing, the andogynous look, the style was just absolutely riveting. The video was inspired by a Fellini film -Juliet of the Spirits - the idea was to put things together that shouldn't be together, in a surreal way - here we have technology and nature. Eurythmics stated that when they put the cow in the boardroom it was out of place but when they put the technology in nature it seemed to fit. You should try the video for their songs Beethoven (I love to listen to) and Love is Stranger - Annie took on different personas and played with characters. Infamously she performed Sweet Dreams at the Grammys dressed as a man and had to provide MTV with her birth certificate to prove she was female after the station watched the Love is a Stranger video where she removes her wig and thought she was a male transvestite.

Another great song by Eurythmics is "Would I Lie to You?"
"Don't Go" by Yaz featuring the amazing Alison Moyet is another Synth-Pop classic. Or if you really want to go for something unique try "Never Say Never" by Romeo Void (Featuring Debora Iyall on vocals. But beware, in the good version, there is an F-bomb).
Also, you'll have to check out The Motels featuring Martha Davis, Take The "L" and Quarterflash, "Harden My Heart" or "Find another Fool".

I’ve been pushing for Yazoo forever. They were pioneers in so many ways. Such an incredible band story. I was lucky enough to see their Reconnected tour back in 2008 in NYC. I prefer Situation, though. That song has been sampled by so many artists. Alison’s laugh is even in “Macarena”.

A fantastic female 80's band is Roxette. I can recommend two of their songs as starters: "Listen To Your Heart" and "The Look."
D.H.T. did a fantastic cover of "Listen To Your Heart" about 15 years ago. The lead singer for that cover was also a female: Edmée.

I actually met them just before they broke out. They were on their way to a gig in San Bernardino, stuck with a leaking water hose at the Union 76 at the junction of I-15 Hgwy 18. The station was out of their hose, but I was able to cut it and stretch it out enough to reconnect it. They seemed real nice, but it was hard to communicate as they didn't speak English very well. My ex wasn't really happy with it all though as Marie was looking quite good in those tight leather pants...

I was incredibly lucky to see the Eurythmics live in a New York nightclub called The Ritz shortly after this album came out. She performed on a raised catwalk that went the length of the room. The word phenomenal is not enough to describe how great it was. I have been an Annie Lennox fan ever since. What a voice!

The Eurythmics were an amazing edition to the sounds of the 80's. I highly recommend listening to her solo work as well. No More I Love You's, Walking on Broken Glass, Love Song for a Vampire, and my favorite will always be COLD - brings chills and goosebumps just typing the title. - OH, I almost forgot her duet with The Queen of Soul - Sisters Are Doing it for Themselves with Aretha Franklin.

Dave Stewart the other half of the Eurythmics was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, He and Annie were originally part of a group called ‘The Tourists.’ He lived near my mother-in-Law and went to the same schools as my wife and sister-in-law.

I was at a concert in London in the earlyish '80s, I forget who I'd gone to see, just before the main act Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart appeared on stage, played Sweet Dreams and left. That was it but a truly iconic three or four minutes, it was the launch of the Sweet Dreams album, which made them into global superstars. And the rest, as they say, is history.

This is one of my top five favorite songs, and Annie Lennox is so amazing. I saw her in concert once, probably one of the best performances I have ever seen. She was generous, artistic, responsive to the crowd, and so genuine-singing from her heart the whole night. The fact that she sang every track on that album-no backup singers, just her beautiful voice-is another feat of vocal range and richness that is rare in performers.

This song had to fight off one of the biggest songs of the 80's ("Every Breath You Take" by The Police), before it could hit #1. It hung in there & managed to finally get that coveted spot for a week. How about that cool bridge, which breaks up the monotony? I still remember the first time I heard this song. My older sister was 17 & driving my younger sister & me to the store. We were trying to figure out the title. It still seems like just yesterday. This was back in 1983!!!
