Dr. Lim, you truly are a gem. I have battled acne for over 15 years and have yet to find a dermatologist that listens or touches my scars. They say they don't need to and are trained to assess the area visually. They refuse to look at your videos. I have dreamed about spending all my money to visit you...and I would if I could. Your videos give me hope that I will find a competent acne scar revision doctor. Actually, your mention of plastic surgeons has given me a new pool to check out. I would love to give you a recommendation, but the 20 that I visited are not capable. They only push oral/topical antibiotics, Retin-A, Accutane, and hydroquinone. Most simply shuttle you off to the medical spa. Thanks for the videos. Don't burn out...better to help some than completely exhaust yourself.
Dermatology is a wide field, I specialise in scar revision, some great dermatologist do watch what I do, others dismiss it.... as they have set ways. A good dermatologist will always learn. If I learn one skill every time I visit a colleague, its a BONUS. Life is about learning.

I’m literally in tears bc I would do absolutely anything to be able to see this doctor and have him treat me. I’ve been looking for somebody like him for a while and have had all kinds of treatments done that have not worked and my scars have given me such low self esteem and depression. I can’t find one in America, let alone in Ohio 😔

So I fellow your videos religiously, and I learn... unfortunately, here in France, we are far behind you. I’m struggling finding a good dermatologist. I’ve learned so much, for myself this time, with your ABC’ s video for instance, and ALL your videos actually. thanks to YT I’m aware now. And I start taking care of my skin properly in my forty’s :/ This video scared me with the scar by scar job. Very thorough job though, I’m impressed, I didn’t even know that exists. i had two sessions of fraxel and saw very limited improvement, but i had subsicion and microneedling with dr chu in london (davin lim recommended him to me on realself) and i saw a HUGEE improvement. just cause a treatment is expensive doens't mean it works, the technique and experience of the dermatologist matters lots more.

Hi Bri, I had a consult today with Dr. Carrasco with Sanova Dermatology at their Dripping Springs location. He pushed the CO2 laser treatment after dismissing subcission and TCA methods. Did Dr. Mamelak push laser treatments on you and did you only get subcission?
Jimmy Chien Hey, Dr Mamelak did a long evaluation of my skin. I told him that I had researched subcision for a long time and that I believed I was a good candidate for it. He agreed and also suggested that I have ematrix treatments between but it was up to me. At first I said no to ematrix because I thought it was going to take layers off. Ematrix actually helped with the subcision to break up the tissue nodules( it’s normal after subcision) that formed and gave my skin a smoother appearance. I had 2 subcisions and did a package of ematrix treatments. I also tried microneedling with prp after the other treatments but I honestly feel that it set me back and made my skin look worse. I would suggest making the drive to Dr. Mamelak. If you have box and rolling scars then you should see good results from subcision. They also have all my photos which I allowed them to show if anyone wanted to see before getting treatments. And FYI ematrix is fairly painless with numbing cream and basically feels like a bad sunburn for a couple days. It’s not one of those deep ablative type lasers. Let me know if you have any other questions! 🙂
Anne Alipar hi. For me it was subcision without a doubt. I had bad cystic acne with lots of box and rolling scars. I had lost a lot of volume in my cheeks, so the subcision lifted it back up. I also think the ematrix helped to smooth things out. I regret prp dermapen because it set me back and made the scarring look more prominent. Everyone is different though, and what works for one person does not necessarily mean it will be the best for you. Best of luck on your journey. ❤️

Totally agree actually based on the real professional dermatologies they will completely suggest to get subcision done instead of lasers for acne scars but combination with lasers is also quite promising

Very good advice. Interesting to know how it’s done. Never knew scars were done that way. As a teen I had awful acne. When I got older I had dermabrasion for the scars. I got pretty good results. Now 30 years or better down the road good skin care and retin A my skin looks pretty. It was a long road. Have to watch for skin cancer. I worked out side most of my life. Plus laying on the beach with baby oil didn’t help. Love your videos they are very informative. Thank you.

This is really interesting and helpful on your tips on finding a specialist for acne scars. On a related note about not going to a dermatologist for a pap smear, I went to the dentist, and I guess he had just acquired a new laser machine for dental work, and he saw that I have a small mole on the side of my nose (I don't mind it, it has been there for years, and kinda looks like a piercing), and he offered to have it removed with his laser for $50. I have not gone back since.
Hi doc.. I am from India, a doctor myself. I got acne scars that is more than a decade old, while in college I suffered from acne for 10 yrs. Here in India we have really good dermats, well trained and qualified, cost of treatment is also much less than first world counties in west. I got myself treated with multiple therapies like chemical peeling, subscision, microneedling along with mesotherapy, PRP. Then collagen threads abd fillers. I think apart from laser everything possible has been done. Being a doctor myself I am aware that scar cannot be removed 100% , my doc told me that she she can help me reduce it by 70 to 80% as its very old scarring. Finally I am happy with the result, as i m cured upto my expectation. I knew that I cant get a flawless skin, I just wanted to reach somewhere thats not too unbearable cosmetically as it effects my social life and psychological well being. Now I can go to work without make up everyday and hide my minimum scar left with proper make up on special occasions. I am grareful to my doctor who is a colleague and dear friend of mine. You are doing a great job Doctor Lim, as a pt myself I know that acne is not only a cosmatic issue its a bigger psychological issue specially with young women like me. @@nitinthampy9263 , u can visit kaya skin clinic or any other good cosmetic dermatology centre in metros like delhi, kolkata, bangalore, hyderabad etc. There skin specialists (MD dermatology) trained in cosmetic dermatology are available to treat acne scars. I cannot suggest u my doctor bcoz she is a army doctor, who is not available for civilians. There are very good treatment modalities available today for acne scars and well trained doctors are there in metros mostly. Its just little lengthy process which takes minimum 6 months of treatment time and little expensive too. But result is mostly good and its worth the time n money. Most of the ppl are not even aware that acne scars can be treated even though its it costs a bit, still its much cheaper in India compared to other countries. Hope u find this helpful. In the US, Minnesota, I saw Dr Clark Ottley at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. (Mayo also in Florida and Arizona). He did a full examination, looked with different light in different positions, classified my scars, and did several types of surgery depending on what kind of scar it was. The day of my surgeries (two surgeries about a month apart), the scars that he was going to fix were circled in purple, but I was really comfortable, completely relaxed! It didn't hurt that the nurse assistant had her scar revision surgery by Dr Ottley, too! He fixed rolling (excellent!!), boxcar, ice pick, used several types of procedures including subscision, etc and followed up with dermabrasion/laser to smooth the surface even further. He used what he removed from one scar to fill another scar...no artificial fillers! This was many years ago, (20+), so I'm sure their work is even better now! As I have aged, and my face has naturally fallen, some scars that weren't visable before are showing now and my pores looked stretched. (Probably some tethered scars that are showing because gravity has pulled my face down and now these few scars are showing that didn't before). I'm planning on another visit to the Mayo Clinic dermatologic surgery clinic soon. I felt the price was right and insurance paid for some of it. You get a full cost breakdown with types of procedures they'll use the day of your consult, so you'll know exactly what to expect the day of your surgery and how many surgeries you'll need My skin was beautiful! I'm 63...but I was so pleased with the results 20 years ago that I'm going back for more. By the way, NO SMOKING as your surgery will heal much better! Also, no sun while you're healing and sunscreen afterwards. Taking care of your skin while healing is a breeze; just a little antibiotic ointment to keep the areas moisturized and free from infection. And I used no pain meds although they were subscribed if I felt I needed them. You will be assigned to a doctor when you call the clinic, but the Mayo Clinic is world reknowned, so don't worry if your doctor isn't Clark Ottley - he's still there and probably supervising! Also, there are Mayo Clinic busses leaving from the Twin Cities every day...going and coming back home, so it's convenient if you don't want to drive yourself.

I posted on realself with a quick question about what to expect after a TCA CROSS treatment, and I was told that post-treatment questions are no longer allowed. Was a bit disappointed by that.
Doctor Lim, can't thank you enough for the honesty and knowledge you have always displayed and is really sad that doctors nowadays are not involved in the patient's wellbeing and finding the best solution for the cause of consultation. Unfortunately I see it happening everywhere else in the world and acne and scar revision is as serious as any other disease for it can even trigger mental issues. Why is it that even paying exorbitant amounts we cannot get our problems fixed. Is all a matter of selling countless expensive sessions of almost useless apparatus. It all leaves you drained of money happiness and hope. I am very tired of fighting my old acne scars, but you give us hope and straightforward advice and we have to almost be our own doctors since most just want you to pay for the latest gadget that the industry sold them as a solution...we need more scar treatment doctors and facilities, specially in latin América for our hot humid weather makes us more inclined to acne. I agree... here in the PH, dermatologists are all about laser packages. I believe the right approach is a personalized treatment and combination of different techniques. Acne and acne scarring can really have a huge psychological impact on someone. I made a vow never to be married and give birth simply because I don't want to pass down my bad genes onto anyone and put my child the same suffering I went through.

I have been following your channel/videos for quite some time. I understand what you're saying about finding a specialist but let me tell you my personal experience: I have a good medical insurance that covers acne scar treatment. I am originally from Portugal but I currently live in Spain. I found a doctor with a good reputation who suggested 5 sessions of Fraxel laser Ellipse from Nordlys. I quite disappointed with results since I consider myself to have "mild" acne scarring. I want to have a go at a different treatment and I just don't know what to choose. Someone suggested CO2 +10mg / day of roacuttane but with the downtime and the fact that Fraxel didn't work I am not sure what to do. What would you suggest? It's just mission impossible to find dedicated professionals like you here across the lake. For example, until I subscribed to your channel, I had never heard of the subcision technique! Sigh...

i had two sessions of fraxel and saw very limited improvement, but i had subsicion and microneedling with dr chu in london (davin lim recommended him to me on realself) and i saw a HUGEE improvement. just cause a treatment is expensive doens't mean it works, the technique and experience of the dermatologist matters lots more.
How much did the subsicion cost? I wasnt aware it was good to have with microneedling?

Hi Bri, I had a consult today with Dr. Carrasco with Sanova Dermatology at their Dripping Springs location. He pushed the CO2 laser treatment after dismissing subcission and TCA methods. Did Dr. Mamelak push laser treatments on you and did you only get subcission?
Jimmy Chien Hey, Dr Mamelak did a long evaluation of my skin. I told him that I had researched subcision for a long time and that I believed I was a good candidate for it. He agreed and also suggested that I have ematrix treatments between but it was up to me. At first I said no to ematrix because I thought it was going to take layers off. Ematrix actually helped with the subcision to break up the tissue nodules( it’s normal after subcision) that formed and gave my skin a smoother appearance. I had 2 subcisions and did a package of ematrix treatments. I also tried microneedling with prp after the other treatments but I honestly feel that it set me back and made my skin look worse. I would suggest making the drive to Dr. Mamelak. If you have box and rolling scars then you should see good results from subcision. They also have all my photos which I allowed them to show if anyone wanted to see before getting treatments. And FYI ematrix is fairly painless with numbing cream and basically feels like a bad sunburn for a couple days. It’s not one of those deep ablative type lasers. Anne Alipar hi. For me it was subcision without a doubt. I had bad cystic acne with lots of box and rolling scars. I had lost a lot of volume in my cheeks, so the subcision lifted it back up. I also think the ematrix helped to smooth things out. I regret prp dermapen because it set me back and made the scarring look more prominent. Everyone is different though, and what works for one person does not necessarily mean it will be the best for you. Best of luck on your journey. ❤️

Totally agree actually based on the real professional dermatologies they will completely suggest to get subcision done instead of lasers for acne scars but combination with lasers is also quite promising

Dr. Lim. I am forever grateful for recommending Emil Henningsen here in Europe. It took me almost 15 years to find the right doctor. The bottom line is that one needs an acne scar specialist not just any plastic surgeon with the latest blows and whistles. Emil gave me a life changing experience.

None of the dermatologists in the state where I live does what you do, they usually only have a few methods that’s outdated or can only address a limited conditions of acne scars. I really want to meet you if I can in the future, please don’t retire too soon, haha

Very good advice. Interesting to know how it’s done. Never knew scars were done that way. As a teen I had awful acne. When I got older I had dermabrasion for the scars. I got pretty good results. Now 30 years or better down the road good skin care and retin A my skin looks pretty. It was a long road. Have to watch for skin cancer. I worked out side most of my life. Plus laying on the beach with baby oil didn’t help. Love your videos they are very informative. Thank you.

Yes, small things matter to some 'sensitive ' colleague, I understand as each person has their own aim in life. I believe in practicing good medicine, others may disagree, but I have no problems with anyone's opinion. I create, others may scoff... all good ....all good.
This is really interesting and helpful on your tips on finding a specialist for acne scars. On a related note about not going to a dermatologist for a pap smear, I went to the dentist, and I guess he had just acquired a new laser machine for dental work, and he saw that I have a small mole on the side of my nose (I don't mind it, it has been there for years, and kinda looks like a piercing), and he offered to have it removed with his laser for $50. I have not gone back since.
Wow... I know density is a hard trade, but I would never use my lasers for dental work...DL
Hi doc.. I am from India, a doctor myself. I got acne scars that is more than a decade old, while in college I suffered from acne for 10 yrs. Here in India we have really good dermats, well trained and qualified, cost of treatment is also much less than first world counties in west.
I got myself treated with multiple therapies like chemical peeling, subscision, microneedling along with mesotherapy, PRP. Then collagen threads abd fillers. I think apart from laser everything possible has been done.
Being a doctor myself I am aware that scar cannot be removed 100% , my doc told me that she she can help me reduce it by 70 to 80% as its very old scarring. Finally I am happy with the result, as i m cured upto my expectation. I knew that I cant get a flawless skin, I just wanted to reach somewhere thats not too unbearable cosmetically as it effects my social life and psychological well being. Now I can go to work without make up everyday and hide my minimum scar left with proper make up on special occasions. I am grareful to my doctor who is a colleague and dear friend of mine.

@@nitinthampy9263 , u can visit kaya skin clinic or any other good cosmetic dermatology centre in metros like delhi, kolkata, bangalore, hyderabad etc. There skin specialists (MD dermatology) trained in cosmetic dermatology are available to treat acne scars. I cannot suggest u my doctor bcoz she is a army doctor, who is not available for civilians. There are very good treatment modalities available today for acne scars and well trained doctors are there in metros mostly. Its just little lengthy process which takes minimum 6 months of treatment time and little expensive too. But result is mostly good and its worth the time n money. Most of the ppl are not even aware that acne scars can be treated even though its it costs a bit, still its much cheaper in India compared to other countries. Hope u find this helpful. Thanks for the video. I have undergone a lot of acne scar procedures and nothing have worked but watching video like this or hearing other people stories make me have hope that my scars can improve. I agreed that acne scar procedures should not be consider a cosmetic treatment as it’s not a choice to have acne/ acne scars in the first place. In the US, Minnesota, I saw Dr Clark Ottley at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. (Mayo also in Florida and Arizona). He did a full examination, looked with different light in different positions, classified my scars, and did several types of surgery depending on what kind of scar it was. The day of my surgeries (two surgeries about a month apart), the scars that he was going to fix were circled in purple, but I was really comfortable, completely relaxed! It didn't hurt that the nurse assistant had her scar revision surgery by Dr Ottley, too! He fixed rolling (excellent!!), boxcar, ice pick, used several types of procedures including subscision, etc and followed up with dermabrasion/laser to smooth the surface even further. He used what he removed from one scar to fill another scar...no artificial fillers! This was many years ago, (20+), so I'm sure their work is even better now! As I have aged, and my face has naturally fallen, some scars that weren't visable before are showing now and my pores looked stretched. (Probably some tethered scars that are showing because gravity has pulled my face down and now these few scars are showing that didn't before). I'm planning on another visit to the Mayo Clinic dermatologic surgery clinic soon. I felt the price was right and insurance paid for some of it. You get a full cost breakdown with types of procedures they'll use the day of your consult, so you'll know exactly what to expect the day of your surgery and how many surgeries you'll need My skin was beautiful! I'm 63...but I was so pleased with the results 20 years ago that I'm going back for more. By the way, NO SMOKING as your surgery will heal much better! Also, no sun while you're healing and sunscreen afterwards. Taking care of your skin while healing is a breeze; just a little antibiotic ointment to keep the areas moisturized and free from infection. And I used no pain meds although they were subscribed if I felt I needed them. You will be assigned to a doctor when you call the clinic, but the Mayo Clinic is world reknowned, so don't worry if your doctor isn't Clark Ottley - he's still there and probably supervising! Also, there are Mayo Clinic busses leaving from the Twin Cities every day...going and coming back home, so it's convenient if you don't want to drive yourself.

This is an awesome video thank you for being honest. I know it's impossible but I still wish I could go to you. My skin is crap... I had Lazer done for my acne scars and now I'm left with brown blotches all over my face and I STILL have the same scarring. It was a frickin a lot of money too. 😣😢😠

Doctor Lim, can't thank you enough for the honesty and knowledge you have always displayed and is really sad that doctors nowadays are not involved in the patient's wellbeing and finding the best solution for the cause of consultation. Unfortunately I see it happening everywhere else in the world and acne and scar revision is as serious as any other disease for it can even trigger mental issues. Why is it that even paying exorbitant amounts we cannot get our problems fixed. Is all a matter of selling countless expensive sessions of almost useless apparatus. It all leaves you drained of money happiness and hope. I am very tired of fighting my old acne scars, but you give us hope and straightforward advice and we have to almost be our own doctors since most just want you to pay for the latest gadget that the industry sold them as a solution...we need more scar treatment doctors and facilities, specially in latin América for our hot humid weather makes us more inclined to acne. I agree... here in the PH, dermatologists are all about laser packages. I believe the right approach is a personalized treatment and combination of different techniques. Acne and acne scarring can really have a huge psychological impact on someone. I made a vow never to be married and give birth simply because I don't want to pass down my bad genes onto anyone and put my child the same suffering I went through.

I have been following your channel/videos for quite some time. I understand what you're saying about finding a specialist but let me tell you my personal experience:
I have a good medical insurance that covers acne scar treatment. I am originally from Portugal but I currently live in Spain. I found a doctor with a good reputation who suggested 5 sessions of Fraxel laser Ellipse from Nordlys. I quite disappointed with results since I consider myself to have "mild" acne scarring. I want to have a go at a different treatment and I just don't know what to choose. Someone suggested CO2 +10mg / day of roacuttane but with the downtime and the fact that Fraxel didn't work I am not sure what to do. What would you suggest? It's just mission impossible to find dedicated professionals like you here across the lake. For example, until I subscribed to your channel, I had never heard of the subcision technique! Sigh...
