I made my wind screens from aluminum foil starting with my old Bluet S200 back in 1970. Recently I’ve made wind screens for my Fancy Feast stove cook kits from a Fosters beer can.

Hi Shug. I find joining three tall beer cans works well. A double fold gives a permanent joint. And the nice thing is an alcohol windshield for an alcohol stove. 😉😉

I'll tell ya right now, the first thing when you got the new MAD magazine was go to the back page, and make the two folds in the picture with the satirical commentary. After that, I went straight to Spy vs Spy.
There is something hypnotic about you demonstrating fabrication techniques for your DIY equipment. It's like Video Valium, and I mean that in a good way. Dang Mr. Shug, you're a one man Dopamine agonist. Thanks for the mellow.

Thanks for another superb camping how-to video. In the past, I have made quite a few windscreens for Fancee Feest-style alcohol stoves by repurposing inexpensive 4” diameter metal duct coupler, about $4 from Lowe’s or a similar home store. I just drill out the rivets that hold it together at the seam and then Dremel down any sharp/rough edges or cover them with metal foil tape (the lazy man’s option!). They’re extremely durable, but one weighs under 35 grams (1.24 oz) and fits with room to spare in an IMUSA 12cm cup (or it can slide between a GSI-style nesting cup and the bottom of one of the popular Stanley Adventure Cooksets). Best regards!

      @cakeshoe 4 года назад

I hope I didn’t sound tetchy or that my comment seemed trite.
I grew up in the 70’s in the UK, so I was accustomed to both metric and imperial - we learned metric in school but bought pounds, ounces and pints of food in the shops. But 20 years of travelling the world has narrowed me down to meters, millimeters and litres.
I just wanted to say thank you for making the effort to give both measurements; it’s only the USA, Liberia and Myanmar that still use imperial (about 5% of the world’s population).
Mind you, I see some European RUclipsrs also giving the imperial measurements for our American cousins.
So, thanks to ALL who make the effort, and go that extra mile/kilometer/furlong/rod to give help us all understand.

I followed your instructions, and then laid down a layer of HVAC tape on the fold side to make it a little more durable. I’m usually more concerned with breaking gear than weight, but that’s me,

Notice your work? SHUG! I've been noticing your work for over 5 years now. I've made mine out of foil oven liners.

Shug, wanted to Email but where? Anyway, do you have a hammock recommendation for a permanent switch from a bed (one that does not break the bank)? Also, do you find the Dutchware Dbl layer to be effective, over just having under quilt, i was thunking that i could use alternative in that DBL pocket?

I don't sleep full time so hard to say. Don't think a double layer will add a ton of warmth. But may work. Depends on your personal sleeping temps I reckon.

remember that old toy "Sit & Spin", could you tie an RC to the seat of one of those that was staked into the ground and have the plane lift off a ramp?

What do you think about Cardon Felt wind screens...Shug.?
P.S. Have you ever done Freezer Bag cooking, making up your own meals from grocery store dehydrated Foods Ramen noodles, just add water mashed potato flakes, or minute rice. . .then people add chicken or tuna fish in the foil packets... and some time chicken or beef jerky ...and a host of vegetables, dehydrated can now be found right in the grocery stores...maybe a instant gravy pack mixed in just Add boiling water Ziploc the freezer bag 10 minutes you have a meal personally I love freezer bag cooking two or three dollars for a meal then you subsidized it with some fresh items...

I did not care for the carbon wind screens. Funny but just did not like the look. No freezer bag as I never enjoyed eating out of a bag. My dear ol' Mom would have found it uncouth....haaaa. Prefer to eat out of my pot. Sturdy. Easier to spoon out in my opinion. I eat the same stuff that would be in a freezer bag but just out of a pot.

Why is it that the alcohol stove has a windscreen but your cars have a windshield?
From a simple English man trying to understand...

You still want a little bit of air passing through for the fire

    • @jcast25

My understanding is a windscreen is semi-permeable and a windshield blocks all air movement.

      Could be a windblock. Or a wind-diffuser.......hmmmmm

Not only does the scissors and the whole punch go through the foil but they both get sharpened by going through the foil. So if you ever find that your scissors or your hole punch or getting dull, just make a windscreen. : )
